Just to get an idea of the scope, a system developed according to the standard will be able to manage a situation where a transistor in the CPU stops working, for example if the ALU no longer can set the zero-flag and conditional branches no longer is possible. Yep, you so called "safe" high level languages means jack shit when it comes to designing safe systems. Your built in super-automatic buffer overrun check isn't guaranteed to work.

The software should be bug-free, but even if it isn't then it shouldn't cause a safety issue.

    Completely agree

However, my snark was more to do with the way certain internet commenters have this incredibly high standard placed upon Tesla, yet if an existing car manufacturer for example has a tech flaw, there isn't nearly the same level of outrage/concern/whatever

Note: I'm not saying that Tesla should get a pass for whatever may be wrong in their cars. I'm saying that the level of wrath directed towards Tesla seems to be people getting defensive over their toys being slowly taken away. I suspect that most of these people have never even heard of Lidar until it became a talking point for Tesla

It isn't even a relatively affordable paywall that I might feel compelled to pay for once off to find out about this one thing.

Your $100 per year student subscription doesn't cover your PS5 news article.

  17. When Sony advertises cross-platform-play and still manages to block other consoles with impunity, why give them any more money?

Maybe this is a crazy idea but, we give them money for a gaming console because they make games worth playing on said console. Games that are not available anywhere else.

Yes I know about the debacle with them forcing you to play Fortnite on their platform if you started the game there, but here's the important bit regarding that game:

Fortnite IMO isn't that great as a game, and I'd rather avoid playing it than have to wage a personal crusade against a corporation that won't miss my business anyway

I'd only be ruining my own enjoyment of gaming to be so concerned about Fortnite that I'd willingly miss God of War, The last of us, Wipeout VR etc as a result

TBH, if I had to choose only one platform to play on right now, that platform would be PS4.

The main reason here is, where are the games? If they're cross platform, they'll likely appear on PC, PS4 and Xbox One; and on Switch to a lesser degree

So disregarding games that can be expected to appear on a given platform, which platform has most of the good platform exclusive games?

Xbox is already irrelevant because it's games are also available on PC, and has a very short list of exclusive games worth buying (Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza)

PC is still relevant for the likes of Starcraft 2 or WoW

PS4 arguably has more games that are worth playing and not available anywhere else.

Nintendo is generally always a viable choice because they make their own platform exclusive games that tend be good, but the larger collection of games on multiple platforms tend to not appear on Nintendo hardware

I understand that your preferences might not match mine because "better game" can be a subjective thing so I'd look at an aggregated comparison such as the user scores on metacritic for a better idea of what most people would enjoy (I don't know why a game like farming simulator would be popular enough to get a sequel, but even that has its fans)

That said, I would say get more than one device if at all possible. Definitely get a PC, PS4 and Switch to have access to all of the current gens best games

  20. Ah the classic Linux fanboy. Finding bugs in the software by your desktop to work the way you need it = breaking it.

No, to give you a counter example:

The upgrade process in Mint works, without eating crazy amounts of CPU, and there's actually a repo on Mint. If this were as frustrating as it is on Windows, I would be complaining to the devs and looking into whether I can fix it myself. Now if I fucked up my OS for example by interfering with parts I don't understand, that would be my fault if it broke. Example, interfering with fstab and then complaining when I can't find hard drives is akin to you touching things you apparently don't understand and toasting Kubuntu

For a Windows example, me installing Windowblinds because the flat Windows UI looks like shit and fucking up the OS because of it, would be my fault. If I moved the taskbar to the left and something breaks, that would be their fault, nobody else had a hand in making that feature. It's their update system and their fault that the update system is shit. I can't fix it even if I knew how.

  21. Funny, I "upgraded" a toasted kubuntu (I fucked it up) install yesterday to Min 18.3 (Cinnamon). Looked nice and slick at first. But I fucked with it again and now it's broken so I'll blame the OS

All on bog std hardware. The neighbouring Win 10 pro machine with the same hardware (That I didn't fuck up, apparently) has no issues at all.

Linux has always been crap with multiple monitors and usable desktops. Ironically we use the desktops to remote onto VM's running on a Linux cluster.

    FTFY

Now my turn for anecdotal evidence:

I've been running Mint for years on my work machine (js, Python, C, C++ dev); with Windows (C# dev) banished to a Virtual Machine before it can cause any trouble.

The host OS gives me no trouble, the guest OS typically wastes my time by being unusable while it updates, because the retarded shit gibbons at MS have written an overly complicated update system that takes 100% of a CPU core to download & copy files + edit registry

The only reason I would want to run Windows as a host OS is for gaming, and even that use case can be solved with a Linux host and GPU passthrough

  22. I've tried both of those as well as the PSVR. For both comfort and market share, Sony's headset is miles ahead of the Rift and the Vive.
