Second, the popularity of Linux gives it a greater pool of developers to draw from. So Linux gets new device drivers faster.
You would think that most companies would embrace the BSD license over the GPL, as it allows the companies to write drivers without having to release the source.
I will tell you one interesting fact though - we have this old house - built around 1829 and the handrails around the landing with the stairs are really low. People back then were generally smaller. There's one thing I can think of.
That's probably due more to a lack of good sanitation back in the 1800's than a change in genetics. Remember these were times when food spoiled easily, people ate poorly, and medicine was primitive. Being short was due to not getting enough nutrition during youth.
[23:32] I think the coolest feature of 5.0 will be the ferret thread. This is a kernel thread which runs around throughout the system and randomly moves things around, playfully changes file modes, "bites" through open connections and just generally raises havok. We feel that this
[23:32] feature will make the computer more of a pet than a simple inanimate object
Lol, this sounds more like a Microsoft feature.
BTW, was anyone else annoyed that this 'interview' was done in an IRC style format? I mean, it's kind of hard to sort out and read that way.
Nobody in their right mind puts the "good of mankind" over money. Tell me, when was the last time you paid extra for an electric car, installed solar panels on your roof, or donated money to starving Ethopians. Greed is human nature. We've progressed just fine over the past hundred thousand years thanks to greed. That's not about to change anytime soon.
Hmmm...most everybody agrees that information should be open, but then again, some of our biggest advancements have come from scientists working in secrecy (example: atom bomb, the space program). I dunno if this is such a bad thing. Competition seems to keep people motivated.
1) To create a proprietary PC, with Linux as the Operating System, Netscape as the Browser, WinAMP (ported to X) for Multimedia, and AOL as the content provider. This PC would probably be a stripped down version of RedHat, being a single-user system that booted straight into X windows (with a nice AOL screen to hide bootup messages). The Desktop Environment would not be Gnome or KDE or anything else--too complicated. Instead, the desktop would be an integrated AOL/Netscape/WinAmp application. You wouldn't be able to do much else on this system, but I doubt a lot of AOL members want to use a command line anyway. It would sell cheap (maybe $150 with monitor), but you would have to be an AOL subscriber to use it.
2. To create a set top box to compete with Microsoft's WebTV/XBox/MSN box. This would probably be able to play DVDs, CDs, and possibly games. Again, it would be based on Linux, and use AOL/Netscape/WinAMP. This would be cheaper to produce than an entire PC, and would probably sell better.
3. To compete with Microsoft in the server market. Maybe least likely, because if they had wanted to compete here, they would have used BSD;)
The bug has been fixed server side by AOL. Anyone who trys to exploit it now gets an 'Error Code 14' or something like that and a nice little message from AOL.
I found this out a few days ago in K-Meleon when I would get 'Page not Found' errors on ESPN.com. I had the UserAgent Setting set to Mozilla 5.0, so I switched it to Internet Explorer 6 and the pages loaded perfectly. Don't know if you can switch it in Mozilla, but K-Meleon is faster and more responsive anyway so it's worth trying out.

I listen to a lot of black metal, and I find that 128kbps is ideal for that style of music. Anything more is harsh on the ears and sounds like crap. In fact, I took my Dimmu Borgir CD (Puritanical...) and ripped it to 128kbps mp3s because the CD sounded too clean. Atmosphere rulez!
Assuming you can use WinAmp plugins, you would be able to listen to Windows Media files on Linux. Not only that, but WinAmp has dozens of plugins for video and other audio types. This could be the link that Linux needs to be a usable multimedia system.
You can use trick the ports system into compiling cvsed versions of Mozilla if you like. Use cvsup on the mozilla source folder to get all your files in sync, and then rebuild the port. It's a lot faster that way.

Both Microsoft and Apple have contributed back to or supported BSD. Apple is giving code back, Microsoft is releasing .NET for FreeBSD.
it's funny y'all

AOL may be interested in Linux for three reasons:
;)

Good. Now all the criminals have to do is stop renewing their drivers' licenses and they can simply disappear.
Microsoft gets mad when someone blends Windows and Linux to get "Lindows", yet the name "Microsoft" is derived from Microcomputer and Software.
You can still do a font crash on someone's client. I just did 5 mins. ago.

Ah well, it was fun last night...
The Pinehurst kids are not from Pinehurst. Thank you.
Oops, that should be KMeleon.org.

It's spelled Aluminium. :)
Just like it's pronounced
I don't agree with this post, but this has to be the most thought out posting I've ever read on Slashdot.
There will be revolution if this were to pass.
I don't think any freedom loving American would so willingly give up their liberties.
How do you feel knowing that all the newsgroups on USENET dedicated to you end in .die?

Nothing more pathetic than sitting around all day anonymously slamming people you've never even met on Slashdot.

Here is a link.
Oh yeah, sorry about the title.
