Interestingly tolerances are exactly the main problem : in Babbage's time every gear was handcut, so highly variable. Worse, since there were literally no industrial standards, even a simple nut and bolt, unless cut on the exactly the same lathe, would not work together! The parts were all individual, the idea of interchangeable identical parts is a remarkably powerful one, but not one Babbage could rely on at the time.
Its amazing what has changed on that front...
Please don't do that! "Couldn't care less about" is the phrase you were looking for. "Could care less" implies that you actually do care - probably the inverse of what you meant...
I think this has already happened actually, with Apple charge connectors. I think was really just proof of concept, but interesting none-the-less.
I would find the link, but my Googlefu is weak today.
Are you sure its changed? According to Direct.gov.uk's version of highway code:
"138
On a three-lane dual carriageway, you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe."
Not trying to provoke an argument -- I am genuinely interested as I haven't heard of the change.
"History" does not rhyme with "Mystery" - unless you consider it to be a "mis-toory"...
At least to those of us speaking the Queen's English. Ah, the delights of RP.
Incidentally, my point was that "the two World Wars" are scarcely one subject, therefore there were precisely 4 items in the list of "precisely" 3 items.
Ah, but since the Yanks didn't make it to the party until December 1941, perhaps they count May 1941 as being part of the preceding world war? (Just to keep things even for accounting purposes...)
Not quite as bad as it sounds given that an average house cost £500 at the time (http://www.wwwk.co.uk/culture/housing/index.htm) Perhaps more like £20,000 in current value? (At a guess, ignoring housing bubbles...)
Although I do agree his later treatment was appalling : we can only be glad that, in the UK at least, people are generally more tolerant.
I think you will find they faked the moon landing hoax : it was one hell of a job, but doing it for real so they could fake the fake was truly the prank of the century.
"Fan: noise will keep you awake at night (18.5dB at idle, prob 22dB)"
I understand the most advanced models come with a device to disable this... was it... the power button?
Seriously, what is it with people who leave their PCs on 24/7 : do they enjoy wasting power and money? Beats me.
I fully agree, but as aside I think it is actually legal (in the UK, in the context of the Highway Code) for two cyclists to ride abreast : but no more than two. Of course theory and practice diverge somewhat...
What country are you speaking about? Certainly that's far from my experience in the UK... but then again, the UK is only in Europe nominally (spoke as something of a Europhile). We seem to be desperate to suffer everything our American cousins do!
Errr... are you sure you've got the right Hugh there ??
Also, a pet hate: there is no such thing as a "British" accent, as any Scottish, Welsh, or (Northern) Irish person will surely attest... I believe you mean English accent.
It's even better than that: captured German Enigma machines were sold to newly independant former colonies, for their new governments use. Since nobody outside the highest circles knew Enigma had been broken, it seemed like a good deal.
That is why most of the code breaking equipment was destroyed or spirited away, and the code breaking secrets kept until recent years!
He didn't invent the first practical one either ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Swan
He was rather good at PR though, that I will give him!
What a coincidence! I'm a Barrister too! But how did you also get to a be an expert on coffee...?

Had too. Or it would have broken the interweb.

Egregious. Geek card revoked. End of message.

Mmmmm, so mathematics is out then ?
Out of memory exception.
Tried Flightgear then? Opensource y'know. Not most amazing graphics, but not bad for the price!
Damn right it is... pesky kids... mumble mumble
