    It looks like a VeriFone 3750 to me, but it's been a while (and I didn't actually work on those devices).

    From what I know about them, the merchant doesn't have access to the PIN. The pinpad device encrypts the entire authorization request and that packet is sent to the merchant bank. It bangs around the visa/MC networks for a bit, then comes back with an auth code or not.

    I will often have dozens of tabs open when I'm reading a news site (like this one). As I go down the main page, I load each interesting story into a tab.

    As I read them, I don't move my mouse out of the body of the story. I use my left hand to hit Ctrl-W. Poof, it's gone, and the next story is up.

    I think igniting the bottle rockets are the hard part. I was thinking of using a glow plug, one per tube, and use a microcontroller to turn on the glowplug to fire. I have a R/C truck for testing and a couple gross of rockets. Just need some time...

    The merchant has no recourse. There is no appeal process. The only recourse is to discontinue accepting transactions from a card vendor, or to accept fraud expenses as part of the cost of doing business, and adjust consumer prices accordingly.
    The merchant actually does have the ability to respond to a chargeback and re-present a transaction they can prove is valid.

    My G4 Mac Mini already can't play HD content. It's too slow to decode it. My Intel MacBook does just fine though...

    certain strains of human papilloma virus CAUSE cervical cancer. some cause genital warts. many are asymptomatic. You can be infected by more than one strain--even at the same time. The recent vaccine for this is expensive and only effective against the main cervical-cancer causing strains.

    it also can cause types of penile and oral cancer. it may present as warts, or may not. Your body fights it off with time but you don't necessarily know whether you have it. Something like 50-75% of all who've had sex will get HPV at some point.

    Of course the people who poo-poo Cast Deployment are usually the ones who were taking 30-minute breaks every hour. CDS makes people accountable. College students working for a semester at DisneyWorld don't take the job seriously.

    I mean, working the front line at a major theme park isn't exactly like sitting behind a desk all day but there are expectations of performance.

    The managers are then free to sit in their office and wait for things to fall apart. Or get lunch

    The "road construction" is a conspiracy to artificially elevate the price of oil. By holding up thousands of cars, forcing them to idle and burn fuel, you increase the local economy a few points with all those drivers buying more gasoline. The increased demand then drives up the price of crude.

    It's handy for cat vets to keep a bunch of extra cats around the office. They can draw blood from them for surgery.
