    it promotes flex time, which means that parents can go to soccer games and workers can go to the office nearest them when there is a problem with trying to commute.

    Why can't people with dedicated offices work flex time? Or is the idea that Sun now has fewer terminals than employees (to save money), thus forcing people to work staggered shifts?

    the readers here actually think that GPLed code was immune to being hijacked by commercial interests? ... Most however will probably move to some other fringe OS like AtheOS, OpenBEOS, QNX, or most likely a BSD variant.

    If these people are afraid of their code being "hijacked", I seriously doubt they will leave Linux for QNX or BSD.

    Anyways, I doubt UnitedLinux's "inhouse closed-source configuration and system management apps" really provide much value over the open-source standard admin options.

    you are right, but this was after the supposed Woody release date of May 1. I figured that if Debian is THIS close to finally releasing Woody, then simple fundamental features like installation should probably be working. I guessed wrong, I suppose.

    When I tried installing Debian Woody on my Sun Sparcstation IPX firewall, it would freeze at the same point during every installation attempt. I emailed Debian's Sparc list for help. One person said they had the same problem, but no answers. Another person said the standard boot floppies were broken and to try some random Sparc boot floppies on some guy's random FTP server, but those had the same problem.

    I gave up on Debian and installed NetBSD 1.5 without any problems. Even with Debian's cross-platform "support", I would still be very wary of using Linux on non-x86 platforms. You will still need to jump through many hoops. Is Linux only free if your time is worthless? Admittedly, NetBSD is not as sexy as Linux, but it supports many hardware platforms, has a "business friendly" license, and has commercial support.

    Unfortunately taxes I pay may well go to pay your hospital bills if you're badly injured or support your family if you're killed. In this situation, when you're going to be spending my money, I get to have a say in whether you wear a belt or not.

    I don't like MY money being spent on other people's medical bills, but I also don't seat beat laws. Instead of requiring drivers to wear seat belts, who should require car manufacturers to install massive spikes in car dashboards. This strategy provides an incentive to wear seatbelts. Plus, those who freely choose not wear their seat belts won't waste MY money on medical bills after they are impaled on the massive spikes during their car collision.

    What is the big deal? Doesn't your Tivo already proactively record shows without your permission, shows that it "predicts" you might like? Nobody complains about Tivo doing that. Tivo and the BBC are now just influencing that existing algorithm (with cash money). This stupid BBC show is now just another OPTION on a list of choices. It's not like you are forced to watch this show against your will. This is not A Clockwork Orange or something..

    If Microsoft tries to legally prevent open-source programs from using their helper-app registration APIs, then just write a closed-source proxy app that will register the open-source app as the helper. This is the reverse strategy that some companies try to use to create open-source proxies to dynamically load GPL libraries. :-)

    "Small Gods," a title in a series of Terry Pratchett fantasy novels.

    I'm convinced that Google will become a giant AI. Google Sets seems like a small step towards machine understanding. The problem with older AI was bootstrapping their knowledge base. The Google AI systems will use the entire internet as an encyclopedia of self-correcting, peer-reviewed, continually-updated "facts". Suddenly, the problem of manual data entry for a AI system like Open Cyc is massively parallelized to the entire population of web users! Of course, the web is full of lies and self-promotion, but the web contains multiple voices, multiple "truths", that will create a general consensus using Google's PageRank algorithm.
