  15. Corporate ladders are upside down on Tech Expertise Not Important In Google Managers · · Score: 2

One thing that baffles me is that we take people who are good at engineering, and as a reward for their skill we put them in a management position which requires a totally different skill set. People want to move up the corporate ladder to feel like they're succeeding at their career, but we need to keep management ladders and engineering ladders separate. Good engineers need to be put in valued positions that require good engineers.

  17. Calculus is easy on CS Profs Debate Role of Math In CS Education · · Score: 1

Calculus class is not. You can teach a monkey to take derivatives and integrate. But students struggle because on the exam, they'll have to do a lot of algebra and mathematical trickery to get to the simple parts. When students come out, they're far more mathematically mature, I noticed this a lot when tutoring students. That mathematical maturity is essential to being a good programmer. You could develop that with a class simply on mathematical puzzles (something less practical than discrete). But why not teach them calculus as a side benefit?

  19. Why must NASA crush so many dreams? on 'Most Earth-Like' Exoplanet Gets Major Demotion · · Score: 4, Funny

Here they had built up this poor young planet to be something of worth. They were promising all kinds of fame and fortune, telling her to leave behind her friends and family and devote herself to being the next Earth. The crazy parties, the celebrities endorsing her, they built up her dreams of fame, and gave up any other kind of success. Now they dump her dry because they ended up making some mistakes in their data analysis. All she's got left now is a lingering coke addiction. Don't you see they used her up and rang her dry? She had so much potential to be special in some other way, but now she'll just be remembered as another failure, probably turning tricks in the dark corners of the galaxy. We need to keep these hype monsters away from our planets.

  22. Re:Peer review is broken on The Encroachment of Fact-Free Science · · Score: 1

The system doesn't have to be perfect. The overwhelming majority of papers published are never cited. And, and least when I cite a paper, I've usually read it pretty thoroughly, so if what they were saying was really all that wrong, I suspect I'd run into some conflicts with my own work. The total sum of all published papers is not an encyclopedia. You're doing bad research if you read a paper and think that what they said must be true.
