    My understanding is that they don't occupy a vital niche in the food-chain or otherwise in the ecosystem.

    I know it's hard for some people to accept, but there is a serious amount of interest (and, rightfully so) in preventing the reverse engineering of website code, or at least, hindering efforts to do so.

    Actually, it doesn't. Library loading in runtime versus compile time.

    The "class path system" is only a problem because of runtime.

    If java was a compiled language, this wouldn't have ever been a problem.
