  1. Alternatively: sweets, raw veg and fruit on Science Reveals Why Airplane Food Tastes So Bad · · Score: 1

Can't people survive without cooked food for a flight's duration? Unless you're crew, the current solutions for cooked food look appaling.

  2. Proper drug busts only by accident then? on Looking For iPad, Police Find 750 Pounds of Meth · · Score: 1

Says a lot about the police corruption.. (obviously not referring to TFA's guys)

They'll do the same as they did with other famous recently dead artists - start releasing compilations/live videos/demo recordings etc etc. See Michael Jackson/Amy Winehouse.

  4. Re:Yay! on Google Close To Launching Cloud Storage 'Google Drive' · · Score: 1

Good for me if they know about the trivial stuff. Example: Do I store a list of recipes in text format so I won't lose them? Well let them scan those and send ads about nearby groceries. Everybody benefits.
Obviously, if you have sensitive data, encrypt them. But a super-convenient shared drive, occasionally being scanned to send me unobtrusive targeted ads resulting in it being free, sounds one more nice thing to have which makes my life easier :)

  5. Re:New World Order will not include the USA on Google Close To Launching Cloud Storage 'Google Drive' · · Score: 1

  6. Re:Redundant? on Google Close To Launching Cloud Storage 'Google Drive' · · Score: 2

In the same way you have separate applications to access images, docs, etc, you could have another google service to access a filesystem.
Now if Google Drive has extra access to your Picasa/Docs/Pages stuff and have them properly integrated, now that would be cool!
Given the usual quality of new google services though, it will probably be messy.

  7. Make programming more accessible on Why We Should Teach Our Kids To Code · · Score: 1

Many people just don't have the natural inclination to code and be *any* good at it. So instead of *forcing* those kids to code (if you suck at something and can't get better, the chances of enjoying it are rather slim, unless you're a masochist), make the "tools" much easier to use.

"Natural" and "accessible" are the keywords here.

So, the world probably needs more GUI designers (*runs and ducks for cover)

I wouldn't be sad that from X child prodigies in the world, we now have X-1; that's alright, the world will go on.
    She won't.
    And that's the sad part...

Parent disables access to content/services because the children can't control/defend themselves.
If employees WANT to send emails, they should be able to do it and not complain about it
If employees are FORCED by bosses/managers to work/check emails when they don't WANT to, then that should be reported
We all know how awesome parental controls are if you just disable and don't pay any more attention - the problem will perpetuate by mutation.

  20. Video link and more on First Person Dungeon Crawlers Making a Return · · Score: 1

Here's a direct link to the video from the guys that made this.
The title is sensational (one game from a small developer doesn't mark the return of a genre).
This is again shameless self-promotion, as the story submitter is most probably the author of the article.
The game looks a lot like Stonekeep, and more, so I got a feeling of "been there, done that".

  21. Not a no brainer! on Ask Slashdot: Does Being 'Loyal' Pay As a Developer? · · Score: 1

  22. Yes, but. on Is the Creative Class Engine Sputtering? · · Score: 1

If you're willing to put hard work, you'll likely succeed. And it's not easier or harder in particle physics than in a grunge band. The problem is the mentality of the people. It's far easier for somebody to believe that with a tiny bit of skill/devotion/time he can succeed in 'arts' -also blame media for that- , compared to some hardcore science.
And, lets face it, arts attract many more people as they sound more hip/cool/whatever, compared to "boring" math and physics etc. Most people care about fame (arts/sports) or money (doctors/lawyers/arts again/sports again) anyway, before they get disillusioned by reality. And end up serving McCrap or sth.

  25. Charges and rewards currency on Valve's Newell: One-Price-For-Everyone Business Model 'Broken' · · Score: 1

And as we're talking about proper greedy companies and people who would sell their mother for a new monetization idea, I can expect the following:
    1) For the exceptionally good/popular players, give some freebies indeed
    2) For good/popular players, give in-game freebies (skins, pets, etc)
    3) For bad/unpopular players, alter microtransactions so that they need to pay more or pay sth for functionality that was previously free

Point is, they're thinking to increase ways to monetize and charge more real money, and to keep the perceived balance, they will probably add rewards in worthless in-game currencies.
