  1. "And I am pleased with it, though not ecstatic." on The Web Programming CD Bookshelf · · Score: -1, Offtopic

That's because you bought from O'Reilly. CDs and books to make you ecstatic can more easily be bought here.

  2. Simple economics on Tim O'Reilly Interview · · Score: 2, Insightful
If the cost of goods is greater than the retail price (negative gross margin for XBox), then you're correct. However, if the fully loaded cost including R&D is greater than the retail price but the gross margin is positive, then you're incorrect, and MS is better off selling it even as a doorstop.

It's not at all clear which is the case in the case of XBox. Can you point to evidence showing that the direct hardware cost to Microsoft (not the equivalent retail price of white box parts!) is greater than the wholesale price?

  3. So don't buy closed systems. on Tim O'Reilly Interview · · Score: 4, Insightful
And fanboys, listen up: quit buying XBoxes to put Linux on them! You know that's just your excuse to /. so you can feel ok about subscribing to XBox Live.

Stick with the PC and it will all be good in the 'hood. Help the marketplace decide by not investing in stupid-ass closed architectures.

Giving Apple control of ANYTHING on your HD is bad. Music, or anything else. Would you like them to next have control of your email inbox, and lose all your emails downloaded in the last year since you moved to Russia (for example)?

This is reason to either (a) not use iTunes Music Store, or (b) burn-rip all songs you get, so you have control over them. It amazes me how the Apple fanboys (of thich I am one otherwise) bash the RIAA and Pressplay, yet allow Steve to control their use of things they have bought, and cheer him for it.

The irony about the DDR, of course, is that once they did become a democratic republic (in 1990) the Volkskammer promptly voted to dissolve the DDR and join the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD). Perhaps the same thing will happen to the Open Group?
