Either plainclothes or uniformed. I believe they did this for a while during the "skyjacking" crisis of the early 1970s, before airport security was established.

I have been extremely impressed with both the slashdot stories - getting better with all of the links to mirrors, eyewitness accounts, newspaper stories, and the rest - and the many eyewitness and survivor accounts. I've also found it a good place to share my own feelings about the events of yesterday, in an open and honest forum.
As important, the signal to noise ratio is the best I've ever seen - almost everyone has been respectful and honest. I will admit to being an occasional troll myself, and I'm very pleased that there has been almost zero harassment or false stories - just as it should be.
One of the stories is now number one on the Hall of Fame with 2422 stories. Again, just as it should be.
Many thanks to the Slashdot crew for keeping the site running, and posting such meaningful, powerful stories. And thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. It's made a difference for thousands of people.
I didn't know anyone IN the OKC building, but I knew people in the area who were affected - a customer of mine knew many with the FBI who were victims and survivors. I have many friends with family who were in, and escaped from, the WTC. I bet almost everyone who has responded today is in a similar situation.
Arlington, VA, home of the Pentagon, is my hometown. My mother heard the explosion from just a couple of miles away.
This is a truly national tragedy. Whatever they do with the site, if they rebuild or not, they will surely include a memorial to those who have died, which is the right thing to do.
I think they should NOT rebuild the towers, but instead make the site a National Memorial in the style of Oklahoma City. If possible fragments of the building should be preserved as a memorial to those who have died. The location, including subway stations and so on, should continue to be called World Trade Center, in their honor. That way we will never forget.
Presumably in many other areas as well. There is a special service at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco at noon PDT to mourn the victims and pray for peace. Also tomorrow at 6 pm.
unless their search function is as bad as that on slashdot...

Right, but it could be more easily defeated with widespread use of strong encryption (e.g. transport mode IPSec). Use of OSS in the desktop allows the user to be confident that there are no backdoors there to circumvent such use of crypto.
Perhaps CDNOW could add a "Copy-Protected?" field in the searchable database. Then we could all de-select it (like some de-select Katz) and know that the CDs we buy are, in fact, real.
May be redundant, but this is worth reading. I can only hope I'll have the presence of mind to do this.
Keep those donations coming! Very impressive, the donation volume.

is at this location, for what it's worth.

personal video recorder, like a Tivo or Replay
$765K thus far. I kicked in my $50. I bet /.ers and others could get it up to a million bux by the end of today, at this rate!
$1.5B? No problem. It's half what we send to Israel each year (to your other point).
Hear hear. There is nobody I would rather have in charge in a disaster than Rudy. No exceptions.

thanks for the apology - today really isn't the day for Katz flames
please update.

this is truly awful. my heart goes out to those who have died, and their families.
I'm pretty sure it was FascDot Killed My PR. I don't remember the rest of the story, though.
It may pass, but then it will be inevitably overturned as unconstitutional. Unconstitutionality never stopped Congress before.

Is this real? Two senators introduce something, is that really sufficient to call it a threat?
Ironically, DivXNetworks' success could ultimately hinge on its ability to shut down the community that it helped foster.
Two words: good luck
the mouse-watching tech and we'll really be on to something!
So what?
