Even under the GPL, there is a provision for a modest copying or production fee.
Actually, you can charge as much as you like. It's your copyright after all, and you're free to license the software under any terms you like for any price you like. You can charge as much as you like for redistribution as well. The GPL makes no statement about how much you can charge.
In fact I seem to remember that one of RMS's criticisms about the old Plan 9 license was that they said you may only charge a "reasonable fee for cost of media" or something along those lines and that you should be free to charge what you wish.
I have no sympathy for any one or any company that's been hit by this. The patch for the exploit was available for ages before the worm was released. If anyone's systems are vulnerable it was no one's fault but their own, and especially after all the windows worms and viruses that have come before this one, you'd have thought people would learn by now...
In fact I'm finding the whole thing rather amusing:)
I've managed to install it with stock WINE. Worked pretty much perfectly except for a few odd crashes here and there. But for the most part it's very playable.
The NVidia drivers provide experimental RENDER acceleration. I tried it out recently on my laptop and it's not called experimental for nothing - it's rather unstable. Every so often XFree86 would lock up. Mouse cursor freezing, nothing moving etc. The kernel would still be fine so I could ssh in and kill X, which would be running at 99% CPU usage.
Certain things seemed to trigger it, e.g. loading up OpenOffice would guarantee a lock-up.
So yes, hardware RENDER acceleration isn't really there at the moment. I expect this has something to do with the poor results the Rasterman got.
It's not about "free" anything. It's about Socialism, to use one of the kinder labels available.
Yeah, I know, you're thinking socialism = communism. It's not. And socialism can coexist perfectly well with capitalism. Just look at most European countries.
Not that this is in any way relevant - the FSF is about freedom and making sure that people can get the most out of software, and making software more useful for people.
This explains why Mars has been so clear and bright in the night sky in recent weeks. A distinctly orange tinted bright light in the sky to the south...
Well, all American AND Canadian accents have almost everything in common when compared to the English accent. I have noticed that people tend to consider their own accent to be what's normal, and everyone else "has an accent". To me, Americans have an accent. When I visited the US, I was the one with an English accent. I have also seen a French man assert that "in French there is no accent" - it's all relative. No one is accentless:)
You will get one after a BSOD (or as they are known in NT/XP a "stop" error). On the next reboot it says "the system has recovered from a serious error", gives a few cursory details about it, and prompts you to send an error report.
Debian uses MD5 passwords by default. A pretty secure one-way crypto algorithm. Yes, passwords may well be cracked within an hour, but that's only because people choose weak ones that are easy to brute force with tools like john the ripper. That's a bigger problem.
Why isn't that ethical? Seems perfectly OK to me, especially after being forced to pay the Microsoft tax by buying the laptop anyway, and then not even getting your money's worth in the form of a proper install CD....
What is "office space"? I've seen it mentioned a fair bit recently here on slashdot... I'm guessing its an American thing? (I'm English)... anyone care to fill me in?
It's more like this:
- GTK has only just got shadows? Windows and MacOS have had this for ages! Linux needs to do better than this!
- What's the point, it's bloat
- Linux needs to focus on being more user friendly before worrying about eye candy
- A few awful jokes...and maybe the occasional post about how cool it is, or some intelligent discussion about how it's done. But not much.
Racist, no... "religionist" perhaps. But not without good reason. And what the hell's wrong with being a liberal? It's like some swear word amongst Americans or something...
How do you feel when I say "American People want to attack Irak just because that's their way of life, money by all means" ?
I'd be inclined to agree with you to be honest. Just because I have a low opinion of islam doesn't mean I'm a rabid rightwing Bush fanatic, and I think the Americans' motives for invading Iraq are highly questionable.
No I don't fully agree with the example you quoted but it's on the right lines. Note that I wasn't referring to muslims as a whole in my original post, just the extremists - same goes for Americans/Christians. It just so happens that the ones in power right now are rightwing Christians.
The digital to analog conversion is probably not the bit you want to go cheap on. It's a huge contributor to sound quality and if you spend a lot on everything else and have a crap DAC, then the money you spent on everything else will be pretty much wasted.
I am not sure there is such thing as "a little D/A converter that takes S/PDIF in and spits out stereo line level", they usually tend to come in the form of large bulky digital surround recievers;) - you can also get standalone DACs that do exactly what you said, but they aren't cheap. They're firmly in the high end audiophile market, for people who like to separate out the DAC from their CD players. They aren't cheap at all.
I think long speaker cables are the way to go. Just make sure they're nice and thick and chunky, otherwise they'll strangle the sound just as much as a crappy DAC:)
rm -rf / will do the same as rm -fr ~, it will just take more time. The -r is for Recursive, remember? So, unless you somehow don't have ~ under/, it's ultimatrly the same thing.
I know it's sidestepping the issue a bit, but have you tried gently scrubbing the scratches with a bit of toothpaste?
Apparently the slightly abrasive effect wears down the plastic surrounding the scratch, so you smooth out the disc and the laser isn't scattered by the scratch any more.
Personally I'd be more inclined to buy the CD again than download the copies, not for any moral reason or anything, it's just that the majority of MP3s out in the wild are horrible rips, 128kbps joint stereo encoded with Audiocatalyst or something, and sound like crap;)
If you want a version that's not full of sensationalist waffle you can find another article at the good old BBC.
Compile the data you want for your report into an XML tree. Dump the XML and use an XSLT script to generate an XHTML page.
Sure, it'll take longer to do initially, but think how much more control over the look of the report you would get?

Sounds like a troll to me...

The Pur and Brita filters are simple carbon filters
No they aren't, they are ion exchange resins. They remove lots of substances that are dissolved in the water ionically (salts, basically).
Do you want a horny teenager writing your production Apache server??
If he writes good code, sure, why not? Anyway, we're all human, and we're all sexual, in one way or another... what's the big deal?
Just have to check - you know there's no such thing as blinker fluid, right?
Oh really? Then what the hell have I been putting on my breakfast cereal for 20 years?!

Do you actually read the comments, then?

The Islamic terrorists don't attack because we treat them like trash (which we really don't). They attack because we aren't muslims. Simple as that.
You have computers in the Lake District now?!
