If we had multiple parties, publicly financed elections, and instant runoff, I'd agree. As it stand though - private organizations get way too much power to influence which of the two choices we are faced with in the Fall, and have far too much power downticket. In fact, the further downticket you go from state to local, the worse it gets. So when someone says "so what they are private", I say "Fuck that, if they are going to have that much power over who we even get to vote for they have aggressively given up the right to remain private". Or, level the playing field. Take your pick.
It's a shit deal for workers if you find yourself unable to find a job for something as stupid as age. And if "companies can be free to do what they want" is going to let them continue to get away with abusing workers - then they shouldn't feign surprise when those workers join together and fight back.
Smartphones are dealing with a problem that PC's had to conquer. I haven't felt like a PC I run has bloat for ages. (True, I mostly run Linux and Mac, but even Windows 7 and 10 have felt responsive).
Contrast that with Samsung and it's night and day. I've held off upgraded because despite the faster processor and more ram, reviews (http://www.techtimes.com/articles/137991/20160302/samsung-galaxy-s7-bloatware-takes-up-massive-8-gb-of-internal-storage-from-the-get-go.htm, http://www.tomsguide.com/us/sa...). These can't be uninstalled without going above and beyond what a user should have to. If our PC's pulled shit like this we'd riot. So it's no wonder the upgrades fail to impress.
It is also no wonder we don't see radical innovation - obviously the companies are content to push the same shit over and over because we buy it over and over.
How do you think we get from here to 20 years from now? This is 100 million in research they hope to conclude over a "generation" (which happens to be 20 years). So maybe they won't call you, but they are calling people who can help get us from "that's not possible" to "we've done it!".
I run uBlock and Ghostery (which don't catch everything), and just didn't even think to check for it as an option. It should be in the browser by default. Even technically literate users won't remember to check every setting.
This is bad too, since when the ads load they can push content on the page. You get accidental clicks this way (though perhaps on some sites this is strategic).
All browsers should have the ability to pause autoplay content (videos with sound especially) by default. This would be a game changer. Chrome has this: An article with an ironic autoplay advertisement.
Between battery life and data caps, unless something changes radically on either front you'll have customers with a phone (and a plan) that burns out within the first few days of the month. Not to mention throttling.
The SCOTUS will be back in session in October. Should just continue on with only 8 justices, or wait until the next president is in place? Plus, if the next president is a Democrat, do you really believe Cruz or Rubio would act any differently than they are now?
Why? Centrist doesn't mean "most reasonable" or "most fair". We want a judge who will respect human rights, the constitution, and bring a brilliant mind and a good heart. Someone who isn't afraid to be a voice of dissent.
We need to stop pretending centrists are somehow morally superior, when they are mostly morally equal (or in some cases simply liberals or conservatives who haven't the guts to stand up for what they really believe in). It is also dismissive of the validity of the policy differences represented. Liberals and conservatives have real differences that matter, and sometimes only one side is correct. Saying "just pick the middle for the middle's sake" is wrongheaded. Pick the middle when the middle is correct.
Sanders wants to raise the salaries of H1B workers. Which would lessen stories like these, and reduce them to situations in which you truly can only find the person you want overseas (and make sure they get paid a fair rate).
Clinton wants to raise the cap and allow more stories like this to happen.
This isn't just a Republican/Democrat debate, it's a more complex split.
Who has time for that? Seriously, 5 seconds to read the following:
a completely reorganized graphical user interface that makes it more convenient and faster for users to access the software's commonly used features. There's now a new menu for each of LibreOffice's core components, such as Calc, Impress, Draw, and Writer. Furthermore, many of the menu commands and icons have been repositioned.
Seeing articles like this on Slashdot makes me happy. It's important to keep up with the news, but seeing conferences (especially if they are in places I can travel to) is a nice change of pace that honors the original intent of the site.
Right, because trying to keep church and state separate and advocating for quality education is the same as inciting a mob. Or maybe you don't have a substantive argument to counter mine.
Society should have a right to say "You need to respect separation of church and state. You can't short change your kids out of a real education". Fuck yes.
Should Kansas be allowed to teach creationism as if it were science? Fuck no. Of course you'd oversimplify as an anonymous coward.
I wish this wasn't modded up. It's taking a shallow cut on a finger and arguing we should throw out the whole human.
Federal standards for education are a good thing and should be STRENGTHENED because:
We can ensure everyone has access to a quality education. Some states really give poor/minority students a shit deal, and in the south have a history of doing this on purpose.
We can ensure science is SCIENCE, not a Christian religion class.
We could bring back a REAL civics class and ensure it is available to all of our children, empowering a new generation to be more politically active and effective.
Often when you see someone arguing against federal education, there's either paranoia at play, or an ulterior motive like "defunding federal government" or "states rights" (and all the historical baggage that claim goes with).
Slashdot we are better than this. Let's be skeptical.
This is not to say federal (or state) education standards can't be abused. The above article is an example of that (and we should fight against it). But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Let's decide what great education looks like, and fight to make sure EVERY child in this country has access. Let's not settle for letting a regressive state like Kansas hurt their kids with a bad education AND GET AWAY WITH IT.
Does SwiftKey phone home what users are typing? $250 million seems a lot for an input method, more reasonable for a large set of data for them to analyze.
I see a lot of comments talking about the tech and lack of vision. That's surely part of it. But that sounds like an awful work environment. If you can work someplace that isn't high stress and respects you as a human being (or is even, FUN), then of course you'd lean that way. Hopefully Apple wakes up and changes their tune.
Was this related to the investigation? A negative critique of social media and/or Facebook in general? Or a burning plea from users for a dislike feature?
So this is in some ways a loan with much kinder terms and higher risk for investors. It also seems targeted at lower income higher risk students. So what is the total amount owed? My bet is if this takes flight it will be much higher than a comparable loan.
The line about the lack of consumer protections ought to give everyone pause.
Thank you. I didn't even know what this "feature" was. Now I can turn it off and wait until the next overreach by Firefox. I wonder how long I had this turned on, and whether the next slimy move by Firefox will remain a non obvious/effectively hidden problem for as long.

"Most Slashdot Readers Don't Realize Time is Still Putting Out Content" would be a better headline.

It's annoying the article doesn't list the banks.

Is the reliability that bad? Looking to buy a new SSD, and reliability and cost are my top concerns.

Sublime for an amazing editor. If Jetbrains made a C# IDE it would be pretty great (not sure how good the plugin is).
