This kind of patriotism/fantatical pride is really puzzling. People here are arguing about inventions that happend centuries before. You didnt know those people much less invest anything of your own in their exploits. Do you really think their genius makes your genes more valuable?

What did you invent today? What did you create yesterday? Those are the ONLY things you should really be proud of, isnt it?

People get crushed when their team loses. Even when they contributed exactly zero towards the effort.
How have you failed if your favorite football team didnt win? How have you failed if a greek ancient invented
zero instead of an indian (or whoever did).

It seems like a bug in human software. We continue to allow ourselves to be manipulated by these things.

  3. They lost the entertainment system arms race on Movies Losing Popularity at Box Office · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why would I go to a movie theater and wait in line, walk on a sticky floor, and see a movie in a room with a badly calibrated sound system and scratches on the screen?

They can connect the fall in movie theater ticket sales with the rise in DVD sales (home and rentals). DVDs offer extra features, subtitles, fast forward and rewind. All for the same price as a couple of tickets to the theater (w/ popcorn). And you dont have to schedule around a DVD.

If movie theaters want to survive, they are going to have to offer much more than just the movies and a snack bar.

    Some suggestions:

Card readers that you swipe to go into a movie and the bill shows up on your credit card or a bill at the end of the month.

    Special screenings.

Fix the damn theaters so they look and sound PERFECT.

Merchandising or some other way of getting involvement so that people who see the movie in the theater get something more than the DVD viewers. A program, a shirt, a coupon to visit a special website forum.

New ideas in movies would be nice. Remakes are a defensive strategy which is not working well. People pay to see new ideas.

Lets face it: There are far MORE movies and far BETTER movies showing on far MORE screens then ever in the past. But movie theaters themselves may be inconvenient compared to home entertainment. I have to drive an hour to see a movie with my friends at a good theater.

You are going to have to make the theaters better than waiting for the DVD and seeing it at leisure.

I really dont understand why basic computers are still so expensive. For basic

The time will come soon, when people will be able to plug a keyboard, mouse, and
display into their CELLPHONE and have enough power to get what they need done
    with network-based apps.

I suspect that we live in the golden age of general purpose computers. DRM, convenience,
and price pressure will slowly make general purpose computers more expensive. Then
they will just go away completely.

  7. Making us feel safer is not their plan. on DoJ search requests: Yahoo, AOL, MSN said "Yes" · · Score: 1

They don't want us to feel safer. They want us to be scared. To be scared of the foreigners, and scared of each other. If we are scared and alone, we cannot cooperate to control the government. If we are scared of foreigners, then we will be willing to allow the government more latitude to control us. And it is working. If we are locked up in our homes alone, afraid, and unable to act or speak out, then we cannot build the momentum necessary to coordinate political reform.

Look at recent reports of police infiltrators in anti-war groups. Even seniors groups. And the feebs are saying things like 'we dont like their communist tendencies'. To them, anyone working together is a communist unless they are govt, or military. Those are a-ok.

It will probably get a lot worse before people become stung enough to stand up for themselves. Time will tell whether changes in technology will help balance the equation, or keep it tipping in favor of centralized state power.

I hope it doesnt tip too much further. This can be a really nice place to live when we have good leaders who have a plan to make life better for people, and not just more orderly for themselves.
