actually I remember a company in brazil that made very nifty self-sharpening razor blades. Those things lasted a LONG time, measured in years no less.

They were promptly bought out by gillette together with all their patents, then shut down. This was more than a decade ago. I only know this because my grandfather was telling me about it recently, he still has some. To this day I still have to buy razor blades that last for less than a month.

    Go figure.

I had the argument about the lightbulb with my physics teacher. I lost. Do some research. Cheap efficient lightbulbs that last for decades aren't hard to produce. The parent poster is right when he says the companies who make lightbulbs aren't interested and destroy anyone who attempts it.

Capitalism in practice does not work like you think. Monopolies and cartels are a dime a dozen in this world, stiffling competition and using power and influence to maintain outdated buisness models.

Add to this you get a lot of work that's already done, you don't have to license even more tech from another company to encode, decode, play etc. Add to that you get all the freedoms of the GPL and thousands of user testers and free coders improving and bugfixing the format and codec. Seems like it's worth it to me.

  9. Re:Paper doesn't come from rainforests!! on Recycling The First World, in the Third · · Score: 3, Insightful
Okay, I'm from Brazil so I will comment. In the rainforests in Brazil loggers DO cut down trees and sell them for every purpose. Yes even to make paper in the developed world. Not only that but over 90% of all the trees cut down go to the developed world. Where do you think all the good wood like mahogony (ie. everything except pine, oak and cherry) comes from? A rainforest that's where. These trees take hundreds of years to grow, they can't be cultivated like pine.

You do have a point that a significant portion of the damage to the forests is done in order to get new agricultural land, but it's not cut down it's usually burned down illegaly by rogue farmers.
Don't go getting smug though, because 90% of that agricultural product (usually beef) then gets sold in the developed world as well. Not only that, but because most of the cleared land was burned down to graze cattle, the soil becomes unusable within a few years and they do it again.

Regardless of how the damage is done, the vast majority of it is financed for by money from the developed world.Yes, what you do here does mean you're responsible for acres of rainforests being depleted. Quit denying it and do something about it.
