It doesn't matter if they send a courtesy message. This was done during specific times of crisis (or while they believed there may be more attacks forthcoming after an event). If the terrorists either don't notice or don't care about the warning, the security services can continue to listen to the terrorists co-ordinating their attacks; if the terrorists do notice, they have to make a choice -- stop co-ordinating with each other (potentially ruining their plans) or continue talking and thus inform the security forces of every stage of their attack.
It's also quite encouraging that this has only been used twice in 9 months; it shows they are using it responsibly and only in extreme situations.
They're doing this to lend their weight to the claims and therefore provide SCO with some credibility; it's in Microsoft's interests to do so, after all.
The patent office site linked to above is titled "USPTO Patent Full-Text and Image Database", and has a shopping cart... are they next in line? I'll bet not...
What's to stop Apple continuing as a hardware vendor on x86? They just put together a standard set of components they can support, put them in a fancy box, and sell that with OS X tailored specifically for those parts.
An x86 port doesn't have to mean it runs on every x86 machine, just as a PPC OS X doesn't run on every PPC machine.
Of course, they'd bump the price up to Porsche standards still, missing the point entirely...
There was a BBC documentary about 4 or 5 years ago with this story in it; the main subject was the MKULTRA project, and it was entitled "The Search for the Manchurian Candidate" (or something like that), but this "Acoustic Kitty" thing came up as an anecdote from some ex-intelligence guy they interviewed. Unfortunately, Google turns absolutely nothing up, and the BBC themselves apparently don't know a thing about it!
Cookd and Bombd have 'legal problems'... unsurprisingly! I think it's still available from www.cookdandbombd.co.uk though (.com is the one with legal problems apparently).
The fact that you have to benchmark so carefully, and that there's such a big discussion here, suggests that in real life, the difference is pretty negligible.
>BTW, is it me or was the way CNN put the story in a tiny window VERY annoying?
That really pisses me off. Anyway, in IE, right click on the first page of the TinyFuckingWindow[tm] story, and select "Add to Favorites". Close the window. Open a nice, biiig browser window and go to the bookmarked page. Ta da!

About 8 years ago. Just so ya know (he lives/lived in Strathkinness, Fife, Scotland:)
I work as Tech Support Droid for Blitz Basic (see sig), a compiled Basic currently using DirectX for its graphics (damn fast, and Blitz 3D's in beta; also damn fast and good looking). I know that the author was very interested in porting to Indrema, and shocked when I told him it was dead.
Blitz isn't open source; it's a commercial product, currently only for Windoze, but future ports are a big possiblity (though it'd be next year at the earliest). If you have Windoze, try out the demo from the web site.
This is my personal, unofficial, unapproved spam-poll -- post here if you'd be interested in this (assuming current Windoze version price, around £30/$50, maybe slightly more, dunno), so I can pass the responses on if there's a lot of interest...
Of course, it's not up to me (er, especially the PS2 Linux outside Japan part), so don't count on it -- just trying to gauge interest...

Check www.blitzbasic.com and download the Blitz3D demo. Prototype your game.

No; Aurora was the name of the funding program for the B2 -- see 'Skunk Works' by Ben Rich (former head of Lockheed Skunk Works).

Thanks for that :)
This 'Internet Operating System' is exactly what Rebol are aiming at now -- there are documents on their website...

No, really...
I got the title confused with this, which is a good read on MKULTRA, but the program definitely had "Manchurian Candidate" in the title!

Is a thief more likely to:
a) Read the warning label before taking it, or;
b) Take it and see what he's got later?
If b), you've lost it anyway...
See Blitz 3D... for evidence of its capabilities, see Skidmarks Construction Kit
See the 'Castle' demo for an example, downloadable via http://www.blitzbasic.com/
Wow, it was so obvious!
