I am an IT director for a smaller consulting group. I can tell you that I've NEVER had a 'good batch' of resumes from Monster or CareerBuilder. Both were far too expensive for the resumes that we received.
The best resumes ALWAYS come from a Newspaper ad that has people respond to an email address, referencing a specific job in the 'Subject' field. I immediately weed out the people that can't use email, or follow directions. I know they are all local, and can start weeding from there.
I spent $500 for an ad on CareerBuilder, and got 400 resumes, about 6 were usefull and none were hired. I spent $75 on a newspaper ad, got 90 resumes, and ended up with about 10 that I could have hired. MUCH better results...
Because optical (TOSlink) is at the bottom of the digital-out food chain. The bandwith of optical is a little less than 2/3 of Coax. Sorry to burst the bubble that BestBuy told you. Above Coax is AES/EBU and above that is ST-Glass. THAT is the only optical that has some bandwidth...So I was happy that there was no optical on that. I've got coax cables that cos several hundred dollars that I can use in my home theatre.::: already warming up a spot for one:::
I wonder how it feels to be the laughing-stock of the thechnology world? At some poing they'll get it throught their heads that there is no way they can win this battle. I'd expect that even their employees think they are on a sinking ship.
The first thing I did when I got my first iPod, was go to CompUSA and get the extended warrenty. You don't even need to buy it there to get it. Cost me $39.99 and I was able to get it replaced for free the next year when the wheel broke...Then again 6mos later when the battery life started sucking...then again when the next one started crashing. I use the CRAP out of mine, and am on my 4th iPod. (new, 30gb one) and have only ever spent $39.00 each time I get it replaced. Yeah, I've spent $160.00, but I've also been able to upgrade to the latest and greatest every year for less than $50. I'll take that deal ANY day...
Gil Amelio was a complete tool. I 'get' the pun, but Amelio was about the most worthless CEO that company ever had. Put my stock in the toilet, wasted away good ideas, and never gave me the PowerBook that I was promised for my Apple Tattoo. I hope his 'golden parachute' folded over and he dropped to the ground like a rock.
So were going to have a loss-leader that runs off of a Microsoft machine that uses an IBM chip co-developed by Apple? talk about Clash of the titans....
I'd be happy to give it a shot, if it supported the MacOS. If they are wanting to compete with iTunes, they'll need to start supporting it. Just like the iPod, Apple trumped them before they even got it off the ground...
And come-on, at LEAST put up a decent "We don't support your operating system" page....May as well be a 404 for what is thee...
Yeah, I'm thinking they just want some publicity for this one. That was the first thing I noticed, so I closed the window. BESIDES the fact that AppSwitcher did this in OS 8.5, And win95 did it too, I don;t see the innovation that they dropped on us...
If you bought it within the last 30 days, you'll get some money back if you ask. I bought a G4 desktop 5 days before the G5 was released, and I got $700 back from Apple. That's why I usually buy hardware from the Apple Store directly...you get perks like that. Either way, it's worth a call...
"Dongarra said the cost is so low he questioned whether the college got a special discount. Lockhart couldn't be reached for an answer"
If you do the math, 1,100 X $2,999 (street price of a DP G5) It looks like it SHOULD have cost only. $3,298,900.00. Now they need racks, so let's figure $800 for a decent rack and shelves to hold 12 CPUs. (That's how many they have stacked in each rack) That takes you to about 92 racks, or $73,000. You are now at $3,372,233.33. Even adding in a building, they are still WELL under the 5.4mil.
Trust me, they don't. I bought 3 licenses for Maya 5. and had a ton of work done in PLE. I spent 3 days trying to get them to convert them for me. I'd have paid a lot for that, but no dice...
There have been two versions of the Maya Personal Learning Edition now. It's nice, but don;t do TOO much work in it. You CAN NOT export anything to a real version of Maya if you get one...I learned that the hard way!
Actually yes it does fix all of that. And if you send in those neat-o certificated that you "$3000 powerbook" came with, they'll send you a copy for $19.
I agree, I've got a sales floor that I admin (same as 6th graders sometimes) and I am able to lock down the machines without buying anything additional. They can do their job, not much else, and that sits fine with me. I can update everyone's software at the click of a button. Also, when was the last time that a virus crippled a school full of Macs?
I always keep a fountain pen on my desk. Something romantic about writing with one. I think it helps to ballance the 12 computers running in my office to have an inkwell.
I like Rotring and Inoxcron. Both are great. Mont Blonk is the "Bose" or "Rolex" of Pens. Everyone wants one because they think they are the best, but then you get into them and realize that there are a thousand that are better...and more expensive.
I'm using Panther (7B68) right now, and can't find the change they are talking about. Not in the "About this mac" window, not in the startup, not anywhere. Any why the hell is this news anyway?
That article was about as strong as the average/.ers arm. I'm all about the new hardware, but it must be a REAL slow news day when dribble like that get's posted.
A few years back Apple decided to call their new internet service "iTools" a name that Tenon had a TM on for 2 years at that point. Apple's response? "We can both use it...they are different."
I'm not sure if it was because of Tenon that Apple changed it to ".Mac" but it was a pretty shitty thing to do to Tenon. iTools is a great product.
I could not agree more. There are a couple of other points that people are seeming to miss...
It helps out on resale. Take a look on eBay and you'll see 2yr old iBooks that are going for $150-$200 more with the warrenty.
The cost of repairing the CD Drive on a 15" TiBook is about $295. The cost of replacing the screen in that same machine is about $900. (I know, we did it last week...under warrenty.)
About every year when my battery life isn't what it used to be, I call up and they happily send me another one.
Desktop machines, probably now worth it. PowerBooks? 100% worth the money....
ok, my "render math" isn't the greatest, but I can NOT imagine that the system he had before was THAT bad? What do you really gain by adding that much MORE horsepower? Is that the difference between a frame being rendered in 45sec vs 50sec? I understand that every little bit counts, but a LOT of these movies was done live action. Unless that little Gollum thing is in every scene, why does he need more? (ok, I know, I always want faster, better too....I'm just saying)
I had my doubts about Safari. After a few days of "testing" it out, I forgot how painful it was to use IE. Sure there are occations that Safari won't open a page or something, but this beta is better than most 5.X brosers that have been around for a while.
The new tabbed interface is VERY well done. I'm very happy with it now. Could be the perfect browser....for me at least.
This improved a lot of the issues I was having with WebDAV. Nice to see Apple making the changes that we were looking for in an upgrade. DHCP server is MUCH more reliable now! But still no tabbed....wait...wrong app.

iLife was always $49. You had to buy a mac w/ a super drive, or buy iLife to get iDVD....

Yeah, My 9-5 has a cooled glove box. I've OFTEN wondered about stuffing an iBook in there, but I think I'd do it a little different.
