  1. Pull down your pants and let's see what you got. on Q&A With Vivendi Rep About Bnetd · · Score: 1

Well, I don't really know much details about this case but it seems to me that they are making the claim that SOMEONE from bnetd SOMEHOW checked out of their CVS and 'pirated' source code to put into their software. Having done this, at least from a common man's point of view that SOMEONE did insteed STEAL something that did not belong to them. As 'robinhood-like' as this may seem to the many legal owners of various blizzard games so that they have choices to play their games on other 'non-laggy' servers, it is still breaking the law. I don't believe that GPL protects open source software that has its origins from non-open sourced avenues. At least not in the sense where one steals code to put into their own.

Now, on the flip side of the coin. If the developers of bnetd did not steal code like Blizzard had originally claimed, and in fact reverse engineered the whole thing, then I think they would be protected by GPL (though i could be wrong on this one....).

I believe this case could set some major precedence when the judgement gets handed down. Basically, we have one party that is complaining the fact that they have a nice piece of software that more or less achieves much of its functionality through the authentication of its battle.net servers. Authenticate: great, you get to play. Do not authenticate: probablly means you got the software in through an illegal means and deny your usage. On the other hand, we have an alternative service that does not authenticate because it simply chooses not to. Reason being? Could be a million reasons. Make the servers go faster? Don't have to contact a database to see if it's real or not? Performance issues? Circumventing software piracy countermeasures? Perhaps... all of these issues have not been raised and certainly when it goes to trial, we will perhaps finally learn the truth.

However, the should the judgement rule in favor of blizzard, i wouldn't be surprised for those individuals that write applications that circumvent standard protocol i.e. alternative dns, freenet, p2p applications, or even protocol encapsulations so as to protect those activities that we don't want others to know about....

Still a lot of beans to be spilled and much to be refried, that's for certain.

On the more serious side... let's think about this...and perhaps someone has a better view of this:

The act of discussing homework is probablly in my opinion the oldest form of 'Opensourcing.' Though you are not 'copying' code 'copying' word for word, but when you discuss the approach of how to approach a problem that is at least in my opinion the fundamental spirit of open source. Take a look at the Debian dev team. (Sorry if love for debian shows through) These guys are by far one of the most dedicated guys that I've seen in terms of sharing ideas and helping each other out. Even if you are sick and bed ridden...

If we can't even have an 'open' discussion, I say if you are smart, you take your parent's well earned money and go to a better school like Virginia Tech :-) (LOL! Sorry for the plug)

There are still support for SPARC equipment. Like the other slashdotters here that have posted, there are OTHER solid linux support for the SPARC line of HW. I personally have 2 SPARC2s that are on my desk both running Debian. The longest I had them both running was around 180 days until I had to move cubicles. It compiles and runs lots of nifty network analyzer tools. Granted you won't find any binaries, but as long you have the source, and it's for the distrib of the linux that you have, in my case debian, it has always work and often just ./configure and ./make and maybe ./install and everything is history :)

  18. Bowling alone on Can The eXperimental Computing Club Survive? · · Score: 1

This is sort of a side note, though I thought perhaps it could be something related. Bowling Alone is a book that raises the issue of how socially disconnected we have become. Some of its examples in its earlier chapters show the decline in attendance as well as various's clubs and social events to recruit new members within the last 25 years of the century. I read through a few chapters this weekend when I was looking through Walden books (can't believe they are still around) and I found it was quite an interesting reading (I was thinking about buying it, but I think I can get it cheaper online elsewhere...). I recommend this book and perhaps we will see future discussion on this topic of social disengagements.

  20. Dream Decoder... on Indrema Developer's Network Site Comes Up · · Score: 1
Granted the fact that it will be hard to find developers to develop cool and kick ass games on it, but, it DOES have other features. For the most part, it is a very, very, very, very advanced and high powered set top box. Sure it plays games, but that's just one aspect of the market that the L600 can do. It might not have a chance to do well in the average consumer market, but considering the low price, multi-functional capabilities, all wrapped into the same package, I wouldn't be surprised if you start finding these units in some of the nice hotels.

I remember when I went on a job interview, and the hotel I was put up in (Marriott Suites) had a set top box that was able to get room service, my hotel account, order movies, all from the set top box. But what if that set top box can do email, and surf the web? And you say it has Digital Audio outputs? I wouldn't be surprised if the next time I book a hotel room they will ask me if I want the room to be Dolby DTSed. Does this mean Regal Cinemas might start putting up hotels?

The unit comes with a 100Base port... I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do Video on Demand (VOD) or at least use IP Multicast to distribute movies on a timely basis... or better yet, why don't I just download the .vob file from the next release of Napster or Gnutella. Oh wait... I think RIAA and MPAA are knocking on my hotel room...
