We do have too much punishment before the crime. The real point to all of these laws is to stop people from dying somehow, right? So why not just punish the people to do bad things instead of punishing all the law-abiding citizens? I'm sure it sounds selfish, but I like to think I know when and when not to use a cell phone in a car - so don't tell me when I can and cannot use it. I will make sound judgement. But if I screw up, then by all means punish me then.
But then you threw out that DUI comment - wut. That would be just the same. If people can have a 0.08 blood alcohol level and still drive perfectly, then what's the real problem here?
We just got our first app approved, and it took 14 days. But hey, at least it wasn't rejected for some trivial reason like I've read happens to quite a few developers. It does appear somewhat of a black whole where you just wait and wait after rushing and staying up nights to finish - feels very anticlimactic once it's finally approved because you've waited so long. I'm not looking forward to pushing the next update and telling users to "just wait". Shameless plug: XPilot
1) In a jury you follow the rule of law. According to the law, he was guilty.
2) The images were manufactured. They included real faces of his daughters and kids on his soccer team that he coached. These were just as damaging as any other "child porn" you can think of.
3) If I'm a "part of the problem" then I don't want to know *your* solution!
I was in a jury for a case where a guy has child porn that he "made" using legal porn he found online, but photoshopped on the faces of young girls he knew (including a stepdaughter). In Virginia, we found him guilty because he "manufactured child porn", so it was almost as bad as having actual underage girls photographed in those scenes. It was an interesting case because of the legal definitions.
This one guy rants about the movie, but there have been several other positive reviews. Just now media is picking up on this one aintitcool review and running with it. The original poster, ShogunMaster, just wanted a lot of attention and he got it.
It's an odd phenomenon we're seeing: One original poor review, then it gets written *about* in several other places, now all of a sudden people think there are lots of bad reviews. Huh?
I paid the $10 but still used a torrent anyways. The ghosts.nin.com servers were failing (downloads stopping after just a few megs), so I grabbed the torrent instead. I know a lot of other people who did the same, so I wouldn't say everyone is just taking without paying.
This quote from Airplane! seems appropriate: "Shanna, they bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash."
Honestly, they are not using the iPhone as intended and they full well knew it. To make Apple take into account third-party hackery is just silly. I'm not saying I like the idea of a locked-down iPhone in the first place, but that is not the argument here.
I specifically chose Speakeasy for my DSL because of how open they are with customer usage patterns and configurations. Like the submitter, I call up and say I have a Linux box as my gateway and they love it. They don't cap bandwidth, block ports, etc. I'm sure they'll claim "nothing will change" but I cannot imagine Best Buy leaving this alone... They'll require Vista for connections or something silly like that (for "security reasons").
Sigh. Time to start shopping around for small DSL providers again.
You can't do that because then you might have to hold people accountable. You must be new the United States. We don't do that here anymore, thankyouverymuch.
Of course you can't easily find sales numbers for the PS3. The fact is that they claimed 400,000 would be available at launch. Turns out it's more like 125,000. Sony can't exactly just come out and be proud that *all* 125,000 sold out, because then the real story would be the fact that so few units were actually produced (well short of expectations).
Nintendo, on the other hand, only has good news all around to report.
People who want proper representation in this republic should move to a state that is part of the republic. Living in the District is their choice. I live in Northern VA and I get a little sick and tired of seeing all the D.C. "Taxation without representation" license plates./No pity.
This is great. I would love to see my country's intelligence agency use some great technology to filter through intelligence streams and all the data they need to mine. What's the problem here?
Ahh, but so far all the terrorists have been Muslim. So are you saying there should be *zero* connection made in screening? Isn't to just ignore religion and race just a way of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "I can't hear you!" to the reality of those who want us (Americans) all dead? Sorry to rain on your parade, but there is a segment of the world population that wants to murder you and your family. That small segment happens to be Muslim.
If the Muslims who are *not* terrorists would take some action to get rid of the bad apples in their own bowl, then perhaps we wouldn't have this problem. But so far I really haven't seen any wide Muslim condemnation of the acts of the terrorists. Until that happens, then sorry if I make connections based on HISTORY. Stop ignoring reality because it doesn't fit with your politically-correct fantasy world.
Sorry to rant, but ignorance like you've spouted really frustrates me. Welcome to the real world.
Excellent summary of my thoughts, too. I'm an early adopter. Bought a $1K DVD player when they first came out (still works, btw). But now my 34" CRT Sony HDTV (lacking HDMI input) will not play nicely with a new HD DVD / Blu-ray formats just because The Man is already assuming I'm an evil pirate? And I'm supposed to give them money for that "feature"?
It is obvious that this new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray market is only to serve the media companies. They want two things 1) control over the content, and 2) consumers to buy all their movies all over again. Ok, so they're getting those two things with this new format. But what do we, the actual customers, get out of it? Nothing worth upgrading for.
I'm usually first in line to buy new technology, but I'm completely skipping this round. Come back to me when I can download a movie for a few bucks, play it on my component-input HDTV, and keep the movie file around as long as I want to. Right now the pendulum is swinging way too far to the side of company greed, so I'll wait.
But that's not really a game at that point. It's a rendered movie. You're just watching. So then how is that different from a film that makes you cry?
That's my big problem with the FF series and games like it; they've become movies. Sure, you can hit a few buttons here and there to make you think you're "playing", but really it's just to get you to the next cut-scene.
I certainly know that games can frighten. Playing Metroid on my NES in a dark room at midnight finally getting to the Mother Brain freaked me out. 'Course I was ten, but still, that was scary.
Let's see... we just launched humans INTO SPACE in a vehicle we designed and constructed, and that's all you can say? I'm sorry, but I feel really sad for you.
Why? Because they just keep messing up. They have idiots for management that keep putting their foots in their mouths. They are full of ego. They are assuming everyone will shell out $600 because "they are Sony". Sorry, but they really deserve a good bashing.
I'm not getting into either new format because of the hubris of the media industry to think they can artificially cripple the hardware. I have a nice HDTV, but it doesn't have the precious HDMI input, so I will be affected by this ICT flag. Am I just supposed to trust the media companies who "promise" not to use this for a while? I don't think so.

It's only censorship if it blocks your own ideals. Blocking the opposing view is welcome!
Keep it simple - pen and paper.

Nothing like the mention of Jon Katz to bring out some of the slashdot old-timers, eh? Ahh, those were the days. Learning how to block stories...

I think you need to read up on both the screen and the wireless functionality, because you'll be sorely disappointed.
It's only a matter of time until they reveal their new slogan: "PS3. Won't somebody think of the children?".
> "...wouldn't it be wiser to switch those numbers around..."
Ah, I think you answered your own question there. Has Sony been really making wise moves lately?

Yeah, like Apple. And Apple sure is hurting these days....
