I'm surprised that they aren't going after businesses just for the money. I thought after the Tobacco Settlement that we'd have the government go after just about every industry that it could. I thought the Tobacoo Settlement was just wrong. How the money was moved around to pet projects was worse, but why can't some good things come from bad projects?

You forget about option 4. 4. Bob Hyper Rich Guy is the first human that has personal assests in the multi-trillions. Bob hates Star Wars, Star Trek and most Science Fiction. Bob loves money and power. Bob starts to feel like God. Bob decides to his proper palance view of Earth should be through a self-sustaining asteriod colony. Bob doesn't waste his money. Bob outsources most of the work to the Russians and Chineese a pays about a 1/2 billion. Bob Hyper Rich Guy's kids own the solar system traffic because the own the high orbitals.
I've been waiting for a device that I could use just to read information off of. My big complaint is that it will most likely be sold for $200-$400 instead of $50-$150. For $200-$400, I'd rather get a PDA. But if they could get these things under $150, then they'd sell like crazy. Actually, this tech could help PDA's increase battery life.
Arkansas already has a law about bags or devices that shield "security" devices. I bet other states have similar laws. How much do you want to bet that RFID tags will be labeled as anti-theft security devices?
That's why you need to invest in your own Beowulf Astrology cluster. You shouldn't do your horoscopes by hand. You should let the computer figure in all those asteriods, and then you can claim to be modeling the most accurate horoscopics!
Mod parent up. It sounds like this guy just needs a room with a lock on it that the "public" isn't allowed into. IF he isn't using internet, I'd say don't hook up a modem and make sure you're networked computers don't have internet access. Then all he really needs is physical security. Hire a guy for min. wage to set in front of the computers, prevent them from walking off and unauthorized usage. Not geeky solutions but they will work. I setup my kids computer with Win2000 without a modem and it isn't hooked to the network, but it secure enough to play Blues Clues and Sponge Bob.
Oh, No. Domestic Terrorism! Everyone of those striking workers will have to be processed just to make sure they are not a potential threat to the US general populace.
Is it just me or does this seem alot less of the "EU using anti-trust laws", and more of "EU removing USA trust from domiance in EU market." Why do have the feeling if MS was based in UK that suit wouldn't have been filed. (Of course if MS was based outside the US, the US would actually fine them in money and not software.) I feel the real reason Linux has been getting used in goverments has more to do with hiring of local contractors to keep it running than saving any money.
Remember it is about power, politics, and money. Not right or wrong.
This makes sense. In 100-200 years, we could have lets see self reproducing mining/manufacturing robots, better solar cells, or any general nano tech. We already have the tech to identify and track every asteriod in our system. We just don't put the effort into that direction though. We are too busy looking for aliens or the edge of the universe. I'll give you a hint: the asteriod that hits this planet won't be coming from out several light years out. We could have any asteriod threat mined or moved if identified early enough.
Do you know what the largest bang the windows cal. can handle? I just tried 20,000! about 1.8192063202303451348276417568665e+77337 and 30,000! about 2.7595372462193845993799421664255e+121287.
30,000! took a few seconds, maybe about 20-30 seconds to come out. I was surprised that it could handle numbers that large.
Well, the answer would be it takes alot less solar panels for a truly energy efficient building. And it may be cheaper to scrap the building and do it over right, than use the panel on solar panels so that more than have the energy actually produced is wasted through the windows and walls. I'd much rather live in an average home with great windows, great walls, a good roof and decent flooring, than I'd be in a poorly built house covered with solar panels. Trust me, it is alot better to build with the environment in mind than against it and use energy to "correct" bad design.
Of course! Seriously, I intend on picking up my Cobra and driving directly to an auto parts store to get the mod chip that transmits a nice fake signal to Ford. SVT COBRA VIN#12345 WINDSHIELD WIPERS:OFF HEADLIGHTS: OFF SPEED: YOUR MOTHER
Officer: And your honor it clearly shows that he was driving the normal speed limit for your mother in the middle of a hail storm in the middle of the night with his headlights off and his wipers off!
Jugde: My mother drives like a demon! He should get a speeding ticket for going +20 miles over the posted speed limit and wreckless driving for the conditions.
And the one metric I would be looking for would be the "engine off, shock adsorbers experencing extreme stress" indicator.
That's when you get on-star to come on and request assistance and send a request to the nearest police car to politely check the car for minors making out.
My wife and I spend 100-200 hours beating FF X2. Ok. most of that is just leveling up just for the sake of leveling up, but heck we have fun at it. What's the big deal if this guy had fun at it? He most likely could get through the game in 10 - 15 mins. to begin with. I don't know how long it took him to shave the time down, but it would be really easy for him just to sit down and play it for 10 - 15 mins. and quit. You can't pick up FF and do much other than leveling for 10-15 mins. Heck, starting a new game takes that long with the pregame movie.
Did pitfall actually have an end? I played that game forever, and I never felt the sense that I was finishing anything. I guess the same could be said for Pacman, asteriods, and breakout.
I think Apple really wishes customers would simply go out (or online) and procure a bigger hard drive or more RAM themselves. They go out of their way to provide instructions for installing these components and it really isn't that hard to do. Besides, it's far less expensive for the customer in the end, and you don't need to wait an extra week for the computer to be shipped by Apple...
It would be easier in most industries if you did the work instead of the company. Hey, most people don't want to bother. But they would like to pay for what they want.
I'll go to Wal-Mart, buy bookshelves and put them together myself. I'd much rather have a store deliver the bookshelves and set them up, but I don't want to pay for it. If I were willing to pay for it, I wouldn't be going to Wal-Mart.
There are things that I'm willing to pay for so that they will be done right. The first bookshelf didn't turn out too well.
I can't see them crippling the performance of the machine in such a significant manner (and we can rule out using flash memory as a cache, since that would result in heavily used XBoxen flat-out dying after a few years).
Are you kidding? All they need it to make sure it lasts five years. Give the thing a 90 day or 1 year warranty. What does Microsoft care if the product dies after 5 times its warranty period? That just means its time for you to buy the next one!
Massive government databases on what beer you drink? Give me a break.
Yeah, but then how else would you find the best parties? Some secret organization out there is bound to have this, for the sole purpose of finding the parties with the most girls that have had too much to drink.
It doesn't look too bad. I'm afraid though that they'd try to sell it for the price of a full sized laptop. I've been looking for something like this, but cheap like less than $400. I'll bet they want some where between $1000-15000 for this. For that price, I'd rather just buy a cheap laptop.
This is good in the same way AOL is good at protecting most of its users. It is bad because instead of making programmers actually pay attention to this sort of thing, it encourages them to completly ignore the problem! I can just see alot of people say to themselves, I don't have to worry about that because the hardware will make sure bad things don't happen. What next, hardware Outlook virsus checkers?

You are a coder. You aren't in sales or marketting. You won't be allowed a digital camera.
Otherwise it'll be: Security! Remove this corporate spy from the building.

Well designed software is hugely simple.
I beg to differ. If it was actually, simple to do well designed software we'd have better programs.
Well designed software is hugely difficult.
Um. You could have adopted a human. I'm adopted. I'm glad that my adopted parents didn't decide to get a dog instead.
