  2. WHAT content? on Who Controls Your Television? · · Score: 1
    I haven't watched broadcast TV since 2000.

There's nothing to watch - it's all ads. The ratio of ads to content is approaching unity every year - on the worse stations there are four minutes of ads for every five minutes of content. Of that content, very very little appeals to me. And ads are creeping into content more and more - ads inserted into the margins.

I got so damn sick of it that I can't believe more people aren't ditching their TVs. Do people STILL use TV? Still use Geocities? Still use Compuserve?

Even if the ads were a non-issue, this DRM/blacklist would drive me away.

Microsoft have a policy of not employing software engineers over 30 - apparently, according to Bill Gates, a software engineers skills peak at age 26, and goes downhill from then on.

I find this extremely ironic coming from Gates who is how old...?

The awful truth is that the younger crowd are more malleable and don't question their employers. The only thing it has to do with skills is as they get better and earn a better salary, they get displaced with cheaper labor. This has been a common tactic among many companies for years, and I make it a point to avoid them when job hunting because that is a red flag that they do not value their employees. Someone explain why M$ with billions in cash in the bank refuses to pay an experienced developer a decent wage?

When I was in college, IBM had a bad rep and the students shunned them when they came to campus to recruit graduates. The same is happening with M$ as todays' internet savvy graduate pool are well aware of their tactics of hiring 'permatemps', immigrant labor, and manipulating the legal system witness the antitrust trial. M$ is pushing to hire more immigrants because they are less likely to be aware of M$'s shady history.

  10. Sorry - Merchants *AND* CC are to blame on Who Pays For Credit Card Breaches? · · Score: 1
Two years ago I started signing the back of my cards with the warning PHOTO ID REQUIRED. One out of ten merchants who saw the card in person bothered to check the back of the card, much less ask to look at it. So merchants share the blame because their security is lax.

Credit Card companies also share the blame. Do you know how EASY it is to open a fraudulent credit account without your knowledge? When we were separated, my ex forwarded all my mail to a PO Box without my knowledge/consent, opened a credit application in my name, filled it out, and returned it. She used all my personal information and signed her name, and checked herself as authorized user. If I had not caught that, the cards would have been mailed to her PO Box and I would have never known about them until she maxxed out the $12,000 credit limit. I had a suspicion about my missing mail and filed my own forwarding, and I caught it in the nick of time.

The CC company was way too lax in authorizing an account using an application THAT DID NOT EVEN HAVE MY SIGNATURE. As you can imagine, I went through the roof and blocked her from everything, including any chance of opening new accounts or loans. That single event did more damage to her case in divorce court than anything else. She got nailed on financial abuse because this event occurred AFTER I filed papers - very big offense.

Co$ are master deceivers and masters of half truths, as well as exploiters of the legal system in the most unprecendented damnable manner. Unfortunately the California law enforcement and judicial branches have been infiltrated by Co$ members so it would be no surprise that Hensen faced a partial judge who was symphatetic to Co$. The only reason the IRS recognizes them as a "church" is that the Co$ infiltrated IRS offices and bullied them into submission with thousands of lawsuits.

Tantalum caps have one big disadvantage - they have zero tolerance for reverse polarity. They will burst under such conditions and create a short circuit. Many devices from the 1970s/80s used tantalums and often have service problems due to damaged caps. It isn't hard for a reverse polarity condition to arise in most circuits, no matter how well you design them. Most design engineers eschew tantulums these days. 25. Pharmaceutical Business Model on Report Says Patents Prevent New Drugs · · Score: 1
It is the conclusion of a former FDA official that pharmaceuticals are in the business of developing treatments - not cures.

    See the difference?

They milk more out of insurance/consumers by perpetuating the disease.

It is universally acknowledged that the primary cause for the rise of medical costs is drug patents and the high cost of drugs. While efforts have been attempted to correct this, the pharmaceuticals are firmly infiltrated in government and lobbying such that little progress has been made.

Once a drug patent expires, generic versions usually surface. But insurance companies cannot require their doctors to prescribe generic drugs, and the pharmaceuticals have stated in print that they like it this way. It is up to the patient to request generic drugs, and with the prevalent advertising of brand name drugs few recognize that such a cheaper option exists.

After becoming aware of all this, I decided to hit the pharmaceuticals where they hurt. I no longer accept brand name drugs and I ask for the generic drug or an herbal remedy. If the government is powerless to correct this, then it is up to the consumer.
