    Yes your are right about all DBs, but unfortunately there is frequently middle-ware or other app like a CMS that can make data extraction and migration problematic and costly.

    Who owns your data? Id there a lifecycle to consider? Will the data/information/results be used for collaboration, web-services ...?

    Anyone can buy software and wait for patches. Anyone can own software and prioritize patches. Anyone can buy L/FOSS support for a stable product from a foundation/company.

    These days the Q&A (IMO): Are you a responsible owner? What are the valuable assets for your business; virtual-material (information, data, content ...) or hardware/software... products?

    Staying market competitive requires agility and responsiveness, IMO, L/FOSS provides agility and responsiveness in very stable and atypical markets.

    Never choose the brand and never buy the marketing hype, look at what you need to do (resources to requirements) or solutions/success and then proceed.

    Yes; L/FOSS for most, but not all, is the best path/process [Unless you like to point the finger of blame at a brand-name].

    The present rules of teaching, learning, pedagogy ... have proven to be restrictive, hierarchical, religious/cultural biased ... a failure.

    School systems and universities in the USA are hierarchical and oppressive. Fitting the student in to the curriculum is a waste of time. Mentoring and allowing a student to evolve a curriculum, their learning pedagogy, and share/collaborate with others nationally/globally is best. Yes, some common math and language requirements are essential. I suspect, my 160+ SemHrs, no degree, personal experience, $100K+ Gross ... supports at least a possibility.

BigBiz-Brother will fund interpretations and falsifications of research results for more corporate-welfare laws. The cure for big-profit diseases is close to impossible (almost accidental) in the present environment, but treatments for big-profit diseases are very innovative, competitive, and highly profitable.

    Presently it is un-American, when corporate-welfare will be adversely impacted, to cure any big-profit diseases ; Hence, the government is not adding much to the deficit for cures that would disrupt the global economy for the plutocrats.

Fitting information into an IT solution is always foolish/simple. Fitting an IT solution to information requirements is presently dismissed by decision makers (.com/.gov/.mil...) as foolish/simple; Hence, money, failure, and time wasted.

    Technology sector marketing can hook most decision makers (.com/.gov/.mil...) their bait is still seen as the food for career success. Technology sector marketing ever knew IT and are totally unfamiliar with IM.

    Voice files with meta-tags are highly compressible. Voice to text transcriptions are possible. Voice recognition would mitigate video (not eliminate) forensics requirements. ...

    At sixty, I would be very happy to reduce keyboard-time, and increase voice+face time with some modern information technology.

Can the Education Department produce and maintain a BS-free "Open Course Content" (Open eBooks, Open teaching materials, randomized test content ...) curriculum for grades K...12 that are comparable to any extremely highly ranked private school? No don't force the states to use the curriculum, eventually state education budget cuts will require the Open and Free curriculum to reduce education cost. Yes, education infrastructure will still be failing nationally, but some bills the states should pay. Yes, keep gods out of the "Public" classrooms, appropriately the gods must be kept at home and at private places of worship to protect The USA Constitutional right of all citizens.

    2. Why has the Presidential Medal of Freedom never been awarded to great North American Citizens like RHStallman (GNU...OSS), PZimmermann (PGP), NNegroponte (OLPC) ...?
