why do they have the ipod flopping around in the glovebox?
Really, is it so hard to make an in-dash stereo have a slot-loading ipod?
Just slide your ipod into your stereo like an 8-track tape.
Plus, that way you don't need to buy a BMW to use it.
So you want a dash mp3 player with a front swapping hard drive? Sounds like a good idea to me. But even better would be a dash mp3 player with internal hard drive and a wireless network adaptor. when you park in the garage it just jumps on your network.
On our recent honeymoon in NZ I used a USB MP3 player with a mic to record short notes. Worked great, got lots of ambient sounds to go with the pics, plus now I'll always know how dorky I sound in person....
And there's even software to generate voice to text. I'm sure it's not perfect but I bet it's pretty good.
The lesson to take is that good mileage requires both good tech and good habits.
Thank you! I was looking for someone to say this. My family actually gets better than the quoted milage on our vehicles. My manual `93 Accord is quoted at 24 / 31 and I get upwards of 35 with about an even mix of city / highway driving.
I think this argument is parallel with the argument that [insert manufacturer] makes crappy cars that break down. It all depends on how you treat your hardware.
I've recently setup Wi-Fi (I hate that term) in my office and also had to do some telephone work the same week. It made me think how nice it would be to have Wi-Fi phones for all the employees and how easy it would be for them to get around with them. Myself especially as I move around the building most of the day.
I don't know the real world benefit of Wi-Fi phones for consumers. I live in a reletively small town, 250,000 people, and Wi-Fi networks aren't as well blanketted as they would be in a town of a million or so. But it is a cool idea (:
Considering that a certain portion of the population is willing to have "sex" with a blow-up doll, it's just a matter of time before robots are marketed for the same purpose.
I'm not joking when I say that the "roboporn" industry is likely to be a significant driving force when it comes to creating cheap, lifelike robots.
People act like this is a really big deal and get all worked up about it - ok maybe it's mostly the Media. But it's not like this doesn't happen all the time, or hasn't been happening for the past billion years. The difference now is that we are paying attention.
All kinds of scary bad stuff happens all the time. Perhaps more people should pay more attention. Maybe then it won't be so scary bad.
If Tiger goes on sale this year, it would mark the company's fifth version of Mac OS X in five years. In the same period, Microsoft has released one major version of Windows--XP--along with various updates. Longhorn, the next major release of Windows, is not expected until the middle of 2006, at the earliest.
And that's a good thing? Apple is charging for upgrades that should be patches or downloadable addons.

Well what I find funny about all this is on most occations there are comments (which get modded up) that contradict most of the statements made in the 'article', with suggestions for better alternative routes.
So unless they (Snap in this case) make a bunch of/. accounts and post comments and mod them up, this would actually be a negative advertising campaign.
Help Desk boys when she can't execute the free screen-saver software that she got in her e-mail.
Problem is, she'll never be happy with it if she can't install her lame ass Windows apps like all her friends have. So then you're back to installing lame ass Linux apps for her and configuring them so she can use it just like Windows.
Agreed! As much as I loved Ico, it was tiresome having to figure out their little puzzles and rooms exactly as they intended. How about just throwing together some architecture and a few tools to get around in it and let the player figure out their own way around.
It's more of a soapbox-style comment system then a discussion forum.

While it may not be a blog, calling it a forum is even farther off-the-mark.
Hmmm, I would have to agree. At that point it becomes its own creature. Which apparently works in some means to provide quality service to a large population.
I could be wrong in my definition, but I have to disagree with you. Blogs are... "logs" or journals writen by a single person about personal topics. Slashdot is more of a forum where anyone is allowed to come and discuss any topics.
Man I've been screaming this for a while. Ico was amazing - everyone should buy a Playstation 2 and a copy of Ico. There is almost a complete lack of dialog, except for a few sentences. The main characters don't even speak the same language.
It's a pretty game. It has a good story. And it's simple. Very much fun.
they want a credit card for you to retrieve your free itunes aac, and since this was a promotion geared towards teens, how are they supposed to get thier free music?
i had a couple caps but i didnt feel like signing up. great promotion there. only.5% went thru with it.
Would you be one of the teens without a credit card? I believe that's a whole whopping 5%, not half a percent. Keep up the good work in school - we're counting on you to be a business leader.

I can agree with the bit about workers in harms way. A section of I-40 I drive everyday has been under construction for over a year. Just the other day I was coming home from work and there was a crew setting up barrels. As I approached the end of the processes I downshifted to jump into the other lane just as another worker ran out from behind a construction pickup truck with another barrel. I was about one second away from changing lanes into him at 50mph. I could never do their job - it requires that every single person driving that highway be aware of what's going on and I simply do not trust the general population.
But what you're talking about is very possible with 2D traditional GUI desktop design. I've seen apps that pan the desktop (of higher dimensions than the screen resolution) when you near the edge of the screen. Worked quite well.
It will be offered this fall on 2005 models of Infiniti's FX sport utility vehicle, then again next spring on the 2006 M45 luxury sedan.
Apparently only those wealthy enough can afford to be saved while the rest of the 1500 people a year that croak because of drowsy driving have to suffer.
Bah!
I would say... those who purchase the big expensive SUVs are the ones I'm worried about. I just want those Escalades and Expeditions to not merge into my little Accord.

A Windows-expert parent could set up Windows to be the same way. The key thing to having a kid be able to use a computer without breaking it is having a smart admin as a parent.
I'm suprised the first thing they're shooting for is the UPS market. I would have thought a bigger market would have been standard-sized batteries (AA, AAA, etc)
The article itself mentions many other uses, including RC cars, digital cameras, etc...
Guess they know their market better than I do.
They may, but I have to agree with you. UPS, laptops, things like that don't need this near instant recharge. Laptops are fast enough at 20 to 30 minutes. But RC toys have always taken fooorreeevvverrrrr... and somehow they seem to take longer the younger you are (: I've also found that my Dewalt cordless drill / driver eats batteries like they were cupcakes or something. I've often found myself with two dead batteries in the middle of a project. There is a 15 minute recharger, but it costs so much. The batteries themselves need to charge faster.

For all personal computer password Apple makes it easy. The Keychain is an excellent way to manage passwords.
But things like voicemail, ATM, and keypad car entries you'll still have to remember.
Actually, Mail.app in Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) has an option in the "Viewing" Preferences: "Display images and embedded objects in HTML messages".
How did this get modded up? Nearly every mail program has the option to disable HTML.

AGP does too, but when was the last time you saw dual AGP slots on a mobo? (they do exist)
Would you mind to enlighten us as to where we might find such a board?

Most likely to partner with Real Doll

So what is going to happen when someone comes along with a thick black Sharpie Permanent Marker and mark the solar panel all black?
I would assume they have a monitoring system via their wireless connections.
"I haven't charged in two days. Something must be up. Bird shit on my solar pannels?"
