But seriously, those populations have to be maintained. If the neighborhood cats aren't taking care of them something else will move in and do the job. I'd rather not have to deal with large birds and snakes, so I was comfortable scooping a dead bird on occasion. The morning I awoke to the sound of him chewing the ass off a rabbit outside my bedroom window was a bit weird, but I didn't have to feed him that day so it all worked out fine in the end.

  8. Re:From the No-shit-sherlock department on Oxford Scientists Say Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats · · Score: 2, Informative

That may be the case in urban families, but cats do have a role. The reason they were domesticated in the first place was to combat rodents. The only thing they received in return was shelter from weather and predators. Through the course of our joined evolution they've moved into our homes and become the lazy bastards they are today.

One of my cats was actually born in a horse barn where he learned to be a proper cat. When he came to live with me he provided an endless supply of mice, squirrels, birds, and even rabbits. It's only been in the past couple years that he's gotten lazy, but we forgive him because he's getting rather old.

As far as intelligence is concerned, we have another cat and two dogs. They're each intelligent in their own way. And they're each really stupid in their own way. I typically think of intelligence as the ability to solve problems. This usually requires the capacity to learn new things. My cats don't learn new things very quickly, but my dogs acclimate in a matter of hours. Though, my girl dog would rather sit in the cold rain at the back door on the off chance someone might let her in than go get in her doghouse.

  9. For clarification ... on Woz Misquoted About Android Dominating iOS · · Score: 1

Just for clarification, everyone is aware that WOZ is a bit loony, yes? I mean, the guy is brilliant. But the most brilliant people are often quite loony and difficult to understand. Their thoughts are so out there and constantly hopping between one stream of consciousness and another that often times things get jumbled up. That's actually how they come up with new radical ideas and improve old technologies so rapidly. But it's difficult for them to purvey their ideas to others because, honestly, they often have difficulty sorting things out for themselves.

Also, he very likely could have convinced himself of one Earth shattering revelation and spoke it to the media then moments later realized how preposterous it was and made more dramatic claims. He co-founded Apple, became famous, retired, and now he's your crazy uncle that every geek loves because they want to be him.

  10. Statistics please on US May Disable All Car Phones, Says Trans. Secretary · · Score: 1

I hate it when people talk on the phone while driving. I hate it when people have their dog in their lap while driving. I hate lots of things about how people operate their vehicles. But I don't have statistics about the effects of these activities on real world automobile incidents. I also don't care to look it up. Could someone do the work and post back here? You'll probably find that talking on the phone and dogs running around in the car aren't reported to be significant accident causers. Texting, drinking, falling asleep, etc, are probably the vast majority of automotive tragedies.

Now, wanting to shoot someone in the face because they won't get off the damn phone and drive, where it does happen in the car, isn't necessarily an automotive incident.

  11. Specs? on Toyota Introduces Electric RAV4, Powered By Tesla Motor · · Score: 2, Informative

Sure would be nice to see some specs on this new electric critter. I've said for a while that the Tesla Roadster power train could be great on SUV platforms that are designed for extra weight, and the Roadster's output is higher than most SUVs anyway, including my 2008 Wrangler.

So moving forward with assumptions ...

2010 RAV4 is 3360 pounds with the V6 producing 269HP for a power to weight ratio of 12.49 (smaller is better, Viper is 6.7, Mini Cooper S is 14.5).

CEO Lentz estimated the EV would be 220 pounds heavier putting it at 3580 pounds, and assuming it's using the same motor from the Roadster that's 288 HP for a power to weight ratio of 12.43 (the Roadster's PWR is 9.45). So essentially the same as the V6, with more initial power, better power control, and no guilt for driving it.

Hey, sounds like dynamite to me. Plug it in at night, buy tires and brake pads every two years, wash it on the weekends. It should have a range of about 180 to 200 miles. Plenty for anyone's day with the family. For a lot of people it would even get them to grandma's house where it could charge overnight. If they can get it on the road for under $40K I think they might have a winner.

Firstly I agree with gothzilla's statements about user comfort and productivity.

But to answer the question about making the different OSes work together, it's just a matter of administration. The tools are all existing. One thing to keep in mind is a slow migration. If you're moving users from OS X or Windows to a Linux distribution I suggest starting with providing them software packages on their current OS that they will be using in Linux. Things such as Firefox, Chrome, Open Office, etc. That way they can get used to the new software on their familiar OS before having everything change.

I like the notion of migrating offices from Windows and OS X to Linux, but if I were personally to do so I wouldn't do it because of financial reasons. I'd have the company make contributions to the appropriate developers and organizations involved - especially if it's a for-profit business using the FOSS technology.

It has little to nothing to do with the way the person was raised or educated over time. It is how their brain was created. If a brain can be created to that extreme of difference why not changed in more subtle ways that allow enhanced mathematical capabilities or greater empathy.
