Yes I think having a 2nd network for a vital system is a good idea. This sort of thing is used all the time for things like fiber rings were you have the work and protect path. If the primary work path goes down (cut, maintenance what ever) then you roll to the protect. Yes it is a bit more expensive but in case like this maybe it is needed.

Trolls) post messages bitching that all slashdot does anymore is run stories about new companies and new ideas, and that they must be advertisements not real stories.

  5. Re:Per Transaction Fees Suck... on Add-Ons Add Up · · Score: 4, Interesting

But doesn't handling cash and checks cost money, too?

Yes, but the difference is that with cc transactions the company you are buying from gets a bill from the credit card processing company for using the service, a fee that the company would not have had with a paper transaction.

With paper money the cost is internal to the business so it does not get added on extra. If they just raised the price of every item a few dollars that would 'punish' those that want to pay with cash.

What it comes down to is you have to pay the workers to cover the cash register anyway, but you don't have to pay the charges to use a cc processing company.

For a long time I would have 100% agreed with you on your point. My opinion of this changed last week though when I got a phone call from my rather computer illiterate mom. She told me, much to my surprise, she had decided to install XP on her computer all by her self not even consulting her very own geek son ... My first question was why and she told me that it just looked better and she heard from a friend it was better. Now I have to think that my case is not completely unique, I know everyone is not like this but my case proves some are.

  16. Re:Great! on Debian Desktop Subproject Launched · · Score: 2

I totally agree with this. If GNU/Linux is ever going to make it as a "mainstream" desktop OS then it has to get more user friendly.

I think it goes a bit deeper though ... it has to get user friendly and mainstream software vendors have to see it be user friendly. If software vendors see it as a viable option then more software should get ported over and then at that point end users will see an alternative to their current desktop that will allow them to still be productive. When this all comes together user will have a system that is rock solid, is user friendly, and has useful mainstream software packages. Now all we (or at least software developers / testers) have to do is go get this all done :)
