  1. Re:Lotka Curve on Human Accomplishment · · Score: 1

If Lotka Curves were known since early last century, why do I find just one occurance of "Lotka Curve" (in quotes) on Google?

Not everything that's worth knowing is available on the Internet, no matter what Microsoft thinks.

Donald J. Trump... I would like a computer chip that I could attach to the brains of all my contractors so that they would know exactly what I wanted, when I wanted it, and at what price I wanted it. This would save me a lot of time and a lot of yelling.

Heck with contractors, I'd attach those chips to my wife and kids. For pretty much the same reasons. (Admit it, Donald, you'd do the same.)

    I'm impressed, truly, I am.

  7. look at Apple, people on Phantom Game Console Presentation · · Score: 1

If the Phantom version of Crusher XTreme sells for 30 bucks, and the PS2/GCN/XBOX versions all sell for 50, why not go with the Phantom one?

For the same reason people sometimes pay $15-$20 for a physical CD instead of paying $9.99 to download it at the iTunes Music Store: sometimes you'd rather own the thing permanently with no restrictions on how or where you use it.

They should look at it another way: if I can pay $50 for a game that I own, unrestricted, can play on my friends' consoles, can resell at half price, and can play at any time, why should I pay the same price for a downloadable version of the same game and a $10/month subscription on top of that?

It also ships with OS X 10.3 Panther, although this should surprise no one as Panther is set to ship within the week anyway.

  15. talk to Apple on Home Stereo Equipment With Online Music Purchasing · · Score: 1

You can purchase new music using the unit's built-in LCD display and hear it 'instantly'. No PC required.

It's been suggested that Apple should try this very thing -- Wi-Fi functionality built into an iPod that would allow it to download music from the iTunes Music Store via wireless broadband and making the computer entirely optional.

Nobody's said that Apple's actually pursuing the technology, but you gotta admit it's a mighty good idea.

Just how much is this little miracle going to cost? The article calls it a "$20 million gift", but I'm assuming that's just the raw cost.

  17. iTunes can't play WMA on Microsoft's Take on iTunes for Windows · · Score: 3, Interesting

Microsoft's #1 complaint, although unspoken, is that while iTunes can play downloaded MP3s, it can't play the DRM'ed WMA files that Microsoft promotes. In that sense, it's at odds with Microsoft's designs. Songs downloaded from iTMS only play on iTunes and iPod players, while WMA songs downloaded from other legal services can't and probably never will.

In that sense, it's iTMS vs. every other MS-sponsored service, and iPods vs. every other MS-sponsored player. However, Apple hasn't closed the format. It's just as possible for other download services and MP3 player manufacturers to support AAC just like iTMS and the iPod do. They simply don't at this time.

Agreed -- except for a few minor accomodations to the Windows OS, iTunes for Windows is spot-on exactly like iTunes for Mac, from the interface to the customizability to the tag editing to the usability.

This application may be a few years overdue, but IMO it's light-years ahead of every other free MP3 jukebox for Windows, and most of the commercial ones as well.

But I am not allowed to convert these files to, say, mp3 so that I can play them in my car.

You have an MP3 player in your car, but not a CD player? gripe to the manufacturer, then, and tell them you want a firmware update to support AAC files. It's not Apple's fault they can't add DRM support to the MP3 file format.

  22. Don't forget new iPod goodies on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

New iPod accessories include a $100 media reader that lets you save digital photos to your iPod and a $50 voice recorder that lets you save memos or lectures to the hard drive and sync them directly to iTunes. Both courtesy of Belkin.

The media reader seems overpriced to me, but a good idea for photo nuts. If I bought my high-school-age daughter an iPod in the near future, though, I'd get her the voice recorder at the same time. (I'm a viral geek; I have little use for an iPod myself, but I'd love to get her one and let her discover all the fun stuff you can do with it.)
