This game STINKS. With a capital S. It totally throws out any and all semblance of realism in an effort to make it more playable. The vehicles and weapons are all essentially identical for all nations, and where else can you run a jeep into a tank and kill it?
And the morons at Gamespot cant stop slobbering all over it, in spite of its craptastic nature. Sheesh. But what can you expect from a crew that refers to propeller driven aircraft as 'fighter jets'. Did I miss something?? They dont have an Me 252 in there! Fah!
Didnt read closely did you? A product can exist and still be Vapour. If you cant go down to your local electronics store and BUY one, then it's vapour. Doesnt matter if they have protoypes, even if they work like a hot damn and could be off the line next week. Unless they ARE off the line next week, it's still vapour.
On a side note, these guys must be insane. If you have a good product, go for it. Then the big boys will buy you up because you have a viable and consumer attractive product. Sounds like more of the typical.com thinking to believe that just because it might be cool and sell, that someone is going to buy them for gobs of cash.
I was a MUSH addict back in 1995. I'd play for hours at a time, instead of going out to look for work (I'd been laid off from an ISP before the internet REALLY boomed) or paying enough attention to my wife and new son. And I payed for it with a divorce and a lot of very hard times.
The addiction to EQ and MMORPG's is very similar. There is a sense of community that is often lacking in our 'real world' For me, it was emotional support that my wife didnt have the energy to give me while dealing with our child.
It's easy to call people who get addicted to games losers, or deride them for their lack of character. But in the end, it's about finding something there we dont find elsewhere. I was on the beta for Earth and Beyond, and even ran a fansite in the days before it was even beta... but I got out when I saw myself going down the same road I had in 95. Not everyone can do that... and the sooner people realise the fact that these games are addictive for a reason and make the effort to break the cycle, the sooner there will be less Everquest Widows.
I wonder how the politicians that feel the space program should be cut can watch something like this and not be moved... Sure the space program is expensive, but in spite of how trite it sounds, space really is the final frontier. We've explored pretty much all of surface of our planet, and short of being into submarines (which isnt anywhere as cool as the Space shuttle!) earth orbit and beyond are the last frontier for exploration. All of human history has been about going beyond the next hill... seeking out what we dont know. It seems awfully short sighted to expect that drive to just fade away... Sometimes a concept is worth more than money.
Johnny Mnemonic was written in 1981. When state of the art was 16kb in a desktop machine. So the idea of '100 megabytes' being a vast amount of storage wasnt an unusual concept. As difficult as it might seem to comprehend, in early 81, memory was worth about 8800 dollars a megabyte. (Interface Age, pg141, 64kb RAM, $550.00) So that 100 megabytes would be 880,000 dollars worth of storage. So if Gibson was writing it today, he'd likely refer to Johnny packing around 3.5 terrabytes or so of info in his melon. Make more sense now??
This is 1XRTT. Which some posters here seem to think is a 2.5G technology. It is not though, it is true 3G. Now, it isnt as fast as 1XRTT ev-do will take it um to 2mbps.
Telus and Bell here in Canada are offering 1X, and Telus (whom I work for) has a $50cdn/mon deal for unlimited access through a Sierra Aircard (rather expensive hardware though) and should start offering tethered solutions in early December. The key to 3G acceptance is not a 'killer ap', it's convincing some stodgy IT departments that high speed access to the company intranet from anywhere is a huge advantage. And 50 per month for unlimited access is hardly 'pricing yourself out of the market', especially when it's 50 of what we like to call dollars up here. That's like 32 US dollars. Less than most people spend on Starbucks in a week!
Telus does downloadable polyphonic tones now, and I get a lot of looks when my phone rings with Oh Canada, or the last few bars of Stairway to Heaven.:)
Actually, most MMORPG's are now taking payment via 'gamecards' that you can buy at the software stores. So if you need an Everquest fix but your Credit Card got chopped up by Mr Collection Agency, you can still buy your time with good old cash. I think MS is making a big mistake by not making this an option, because there ARE some folks that can afford their system that dont have a credit card.
Wow. Since when has colour or lack thereof been an issue that even remotely relates to quality? And you can have amazing art and have total crap for stories. And in my not so humble opinion, a good story is far more important than perfect anatomy.
Angst Technology is currently one of my favourites. I find that Barry always tells an amusing story, and his characters are well drawn, if perhaps a little funny looking (Who else would have the courage to have a llama as a character?!?)
How would double jeopardy clauses come into this? I mean he has plead guilty to the actions as a member of the warez group. Dragging out later charges would be charging him twice for hte same offences. And if his lawyer didnt see that the plea and sentencing were blanket for his acts as a member of DoD, then he isnt as sharp as I am, and IANAL.
I tend to agree with you. Any 'lemon laws' should have a clause to deal with 'free software'. After all, if a hobbyist releases a tool he wrote for his own use that others may find useful, yet doesnt charge for it, he should not be liable for his free tool causing prolems with something company X used it for.
However, if he packages it and charges for it, he should be responsible for it's correct and accurate operation., within reason. If the software requires certain hardware, he should not be made responsible if customer y doesnt meet said requirements.
It's a really tough question, because while we would all like to see large corporations made responsible for their mistakes/bugs/poor code... No one wants it to hurt someone who gives away the fruits of their labour in an effort to be helpful.
I think the most important part of the article was the bit about not giving false hopes to the many folks who have been blind since birth. Since they will not have developed the ability to interpret stimulii from that part of their brain, this device will do them no good. Properly marketed though, this device could do a lot for thos who have lost their sight from disease or accident.
Hopefully as the technology develops and is refined, they will also look into researching ways for those blind from birth to use this technology as well.
I doubt NwN will have these sorts of provisions. IT wont really be needed. The servers will generally not be run by Bioware/Infogrames. The characters and such will be stored on the Client machine... though I believe there is a provision for central character authentication to keep the l337 h4x0rz from making ubercharacters at will. So what idiot would pay for a character that they might be able to make with their very own character editor?
Y'know...the cynicism of people... it amazes me...
Yeah, this guy is a bit of a nut. I cant disagree with that. But as loony as this is, he has a dream and he is going to make it happen.
Maybe instead of derision being aimed at this guy, we should all be praying that he succeeds. I for one would love a chance to do something like this, but if we wait for NASA and/or other government agencies to make it a reality I cant see it happening in my lifetime. Unless of course you have enough money to get tthe Russians to take you. Guys like this, and all the folks working on winning the X Prize are pioneers... and deserve more that the ridicule they get from the folks around here.
Laugh at him if you will, but what is the last daring thing you did to realize a lifelong dream? Hmmm?
Well arent you clueless? I know I am replying to an AC..but DAMN.
Have you tried websurfing the modern web on dialup? It is painful! I do websurfing and gaming and almost no fileswapping... so should I go back to dial up? Dream on.
I would never sacrifice build quality for light weight. Antec cases are monsters, but whenever I build a system for anyone, I always recommend Antec. They provide excellent cooling, lots of room to work and very few sharp corners to rip your hand open on.
The only time you need a light case is if you plan on doing a lot of LAN parties. But for those systems, I'd likely want something like the shuttle micro systems, tweaked up just for gaming. After all, the newest one will actually take a decent AGP card.
Drive rails...some people love em, some hate them. If you have a decent storage method for the extra rails, they make life so much easier. Faster to install, and faster to do a change out if something goes dead. So I guess you could say that I love em.
Am I the only one here that can read? All of these people are ranting about cloning as if the idea is to produce human beings with it. That is the stuff of science fiction and bad movies. (for now at least)
The stem cell thing goes far beyond Parkinsons. I recently saw an interview with Christopher Reeves and he's livid about the cloning legislation. The most promising research in spinal cord injuries involve stem cells.
As to the other sources of stem cells, the simple fact is that hte most viable stem cells come from human embryos.
I bet if Shrub's wife or one of his kids were in an accident and were paralyzed like Mr Reeves, that there would be a big turn around in legal thinking at the Whitehouse.
The debate comes down to 'at what point do dividing cells become a human being' And I happen to believe, along with most rational (read:non fanatical religious loonies) people believe it's a lot later than is needed to create stem cells.
You create a perfect copy, yes. But a perfect copy of what?
The vast majority of digital files traded over the net with ease are sub par. Have you ever watched any of the bootlegs out there? I dont think I have ever seen one that matches even 3rd generation VHS copy quality. Especially in the case of video, making something small enough to be easily swapped also means making it of such a low quality that only the cheapest of person would use that as an option to seeing the film in a theater, or renting it on VHS/DVD
Don't buy into the strawman being put up by the MPAA! They are looking for ways to screw us all for even more of our money...and it's time that the public says 'enough'
A few years back, Lucas issued an edict on producing anything pre ANH... specifically to avoid continuity problems. And at the same time basically said 'It's my universe, I reserve the right to change it around as I like'
So if it's pre ANH, it's not canonical... according to the guy who owns it all.
Of COURSE they work. And there is a scientific reason too...

Actually if I am not mistaken, the FCC has mandated that NTSC will go the way of the dinosaur within the next decade.
As in, all broadcasting must be in some form of HDTV. Does that mean we'll see 16x9 on all oof our favourite shows at 760p? Probably not..but at least NTSC will be gone.
I really should pop over to the FCC site and see if I can find the info on when HD is supposed ot be all that is being broadcast...
A -LOT- of people used 3.1. 3.0 was broken beyond belief, but 3.1 was fairly usable (As far as that goes. Slackware was still more stable and less of a system hog) 3.11 was the 'networking' upgrade to 3.1.
Ahh...the good old days of configuring Trumpet Winsock to access the internet via PPP. Lord how I miss them!
I know it's been said already, but RtCW has a Linux port that you can grab, so long as you own the full version of the game.
Perhaps once I've benchmarked it under Windows and Linux, I'll have post an article giving the results. Nice part of being fairly OS neutral is that I wont be tempted to make Linux look best!
It's been about two years since the last time I read FotR, so I might be wrong about this...
Gollum is actually only mentioned in Fellowship, he never actually makes an appearance much beyond what he gets in the film. A few fleeting glimpses and some talk of him by Gandalf. So I dont think the movie was that far off base. The little bits we did see looked pretty darn nice, and I cant wait for The Two Towers to get some precioussss action.

Actually, I believe I read somewhere that CS2 will be based on the TF2 engine. So I would say that TF2 definately has to come out first.
Too bad Sierra doesnt seem to be in any hurry to let people know whats up.
I cant believe I am replying to someone who lacks the courage to post under their own name, but hey.. what the heck.
You've never gotten addicted to anything?
