Well, its not so much that there isn't other life out there, I know there is, its a matter of communication and travel. If Einstein is right about relativity, meaning that the fastest anything can travel is lightspeed, then the universe is realistically to big to be explored by any living creature with a finite life. Basically, to find life, either the aliens or us have to develop warp and subspace technology. If we can travel fast, or communcate fast, we will find life.

The other answer would be genetics. If we could engineer a human that could live indefinitely, that is also a possibility, however, said human would have to be launched with a self contained ecosystem that would have to support him/her for many thousands of years.

Star Trek is only possible if we can defeat relativity.

The developer, Visual Concepts, refuses to acknowledge many of the reports and has only acted now out fear and liability.

More disheartening is the fact that almost all the online reviews for the game made no mention of the bug filled mess that is online play. NFL 2k5 recieved almost perfect rankings from most of the magazines I read, leading me to beleive that most review sites do little, if any homework on the games they review.

Also, no mention was ever made of the features removed from the game that were present in last years version. Chat capability and the ability to change playbooks have been REMOVED from this years game, yet the developers chose to add useless features for marketing and hype that detracted from 2k4's flawless gameplay.

This is clearly the last year for the ESPN videogames. It's unfortunate, but they don't have the resources to compete with EA. They can't even playtest their games.

No, I'm not crazy, I just think chinese food and space go hand in hand, just like chinese food and MSG. Indeed, chinese food, because of the preservative properties of MSG, is probably ideally suited for space. Delicious.

No really, the chinese have launched their first man into outer space. This is good for a number of reasons:

    1) It puts pressure on the Bush administration fund NASA as opposed to the war effort.
    2) Fear of a red moon will jolt the American people out of their complacent attitude which holds as self-evident America's domination of outer space.
    3) It will lead to the commercialization of space travel.

I have long been of the opinion that NASA (and the US government) has let down the people of our great country. I refer to some comments I made when the Columbia disaster occurred:

In the UK guns are strictly controlled, very few people have 30-06's. Probably even less in other parts of europe. I'm not saying its impossible, but perhaps the thing is so damn cheap that if you dont tear a big ass hole in it, they just ease it back down to ground in a somewhat controlled manner, put up a spare, and patch the blimp you shot... the actual gondola, where the communications equipment seems to be housed, looks like it could be heavily sheilded to me. That would be tough to destroy, the blimp itself is merely a floatation device, and looks like it costs very little to make, even a kevlar reinforced version like the one I described. Also... I'm guessing the would have dummy/redundant blimps. Multiple shots from a 30-06 will attract everyone within a 5 mile radius. Good luck.

  11. crazy on WSJ Reviews High End Universal Remotes · · Score: 1
Some of the ideas being advanced here about remotes are ludicrous. I have tried all the remotes, everything. Here's what I learned:

    1) Any remote with a touch screen is useless because it means you have to take your eyes off of what you are doing (hopefully sipping wine or fondling something). The remote has to be organized from the outset to fit all the requirements of a home entertainment center (TV, Tivo, DVD, CD, MD/DVD-R, and amplifier). Forget the x-10 stuff for now (manual blinds and lights).

    2) The only remote I know that can juggle these tasks responsibly is the Sony RM-VL900, and it has to be programmed by hand. I mapped every single button for every single device manually. The sony took down everything. It took me about an hour. The remote has the ability to record 11 macros... more than I can remember, and more than anyone can realistically use (and yes it does the complex stuff seamlessly, ie macros that use 5 or six devices simultaneously).

    3) Its cheap and real easy... no cables, no obsessive "cable from computer to remote" type behavior (yes, i know this defeasts the point of putting this post on /.)

    4) My remote works fine after 4 years of heavy use. Sony is still selling the same remote (quite a testament to its ergonomic layout), and I can clone my remote at any time.

In fact, most people would rather pay a buck or two to have a movie encoded with divx on two cd's than trying to download a 1GB+ file.

In China, and Asia in general, things work differently. People can openly buy wares without fear of prosecution, so people can pretty much sell whatever digital media they acquire. Here, in the US, where corporate fear is paramount to consumer rights, its not surprising to see that the only way we can see the new Two Towers movie is by doing so legally. In China, this isn't the case- if you dont protect your media, you deserve to get it ripped off. In a way, going down to your local "pirate" store in Shanghai or Hong Kong is a lot faster than getting stuff off the net, and you dont have to hide behind a a computer to get what you really want.
