What would Jesus do about the problem of violence in society? The bible indicates he would make it worse by promoting violence as a favored method of dealing with problems. Unlike modern civilized people, he did not limit the acceptability of violence to situations requiring self-defense or the defense of others.
It is not surprising that a majority of defacements are on linux servers, considering the majority of web servers are linux based. However defacement is not usually a result of the underlining OS but a result of poor web programming practices and using insecure web services (FTP). So who is to blame here? All those noob web programmers that don't follow basic programing practices to prevent SQL injection, improper file permissions, path checks or just plainly horrific access logic. FTP is also to blame, most dumbass IT managers don't know the security hazard FTP is and insist on using it.
Nope, you are wrong. It is basic supply and demand. If we did not have this illegal immagrant issue those kinds of jobs would have to simply pay more to get people to do them. You claim no harm done, however the lower class people are the ones that really suffer from this by keeping their wages low. Yes, the people hiring them would suffer, but if they can not compete without paying illegal immagrants, then they should go out of buisness. Doing buisness illegally isn't the answer here.
If you are claming that we are scared because of some competition, but this is not the issue. If you want to compete, don't do it illegally, come out and compete, don't steal.
The tar roofer gets paid 9 dollars an hour because we have an excess of illegal immigrants willing to keep the minimum wage down. If we didn't have so many people willing to do the "dirty" jobs for so cheap, the minimum wage wouldn't be so low and the people living in trailers and projects might actually be able to make a living by not selling drugs and/or prostitution.
Yup you heard me. Some things need to be socialized, some things need to be out of the hands of the federal government.
1. Pull our troops out of the 170 some countries we occupy and reduce the "defense" budget by 10 fold (allow democracy to speak for itself) 2. Go back on the gold standard (no more devaluation of the dollar) 3. Decriminalize drug usage (unconstitutional) 4. Socialized health care (give everyone the same complete coverage) 5. Socialized education up till college 6. Close down all coal power plants, start constructing nuclear plants for a hydrogen based economy 7. Make the left lane a "free-for-all" lane, slow traffic keep right (damn you grannies driving in the left lane!!!)
You are implying that things that are illegal should just be ignored and not treated as such. In the case of illegal immigration, it is actually something that really harms the US economy and should be handled appropriately. I agree many things that are illegal by the federal government are perfectly moral and have little to no common sense as to why they are the way the are but your grounds in this case are empty. I guess you are one of those that think we should give everyone that somehow crosses the border a free ride on our now sparse national budget and maintain the minimum wage artificially low by keeping an influx of workers that have no say in how low their wages are.
I agree, FBReader is great, the Nokia tablets have super high rez displays and you can get the older models for dirt cheap. You could prolly get a 770 for around 150 bucks and the N800 for 250.
Best thing about these devices is that you are not tied to a provider for books and can download books in almost any format and read them with FBReader. There are IRC channels out there that distribute tons of (illegal) copies of books.
this guy forgot to mention a couple things about this hack:
* it can not distinguish between the different pointers
* wiimote can only track up to 4 sources
* nothing can get inbetween the line of sight of a pointer and the wiimote
if you watch the video carefully the author carefully does not cross his arms, this is because if he does he will line of sight (LOS in wow speak) the other pointer.
a fix to this could be to put the projector below a table and project upwards (inverted) on a glass surface so there is no change of LOSing any of the pointers.
Wow. We have another Al Gore here... Someone actually is taking credit for "inventing" JSON? So the useage of eval() on a retrieved javascript object suddenly needs to have an inventor?
> Look at Linux -- so many platforms supported, yet on the desktop and up level, overwhelmingly > it's run on x86. This has been the cast over its history.
well duh... they ARE the fastest and cheapest processors available. because the x86 market is so large, the major processor manufacturers focus on the x86 platform and fuck the rest. that is why we have insanely fast x86 processors today. the sheer speed of the chips out weight the inefficiencies of the architectures.
i dont care what platform i use... as long as it is fast and it is supported on my OS of choice (gnu/linux).
In the beginning, Microsoft got lucky (with IBM) and PCs became prevalent. Microsoft made/ported DOS to run only on x86 machines. This drove the processor manufacturers to focus on producing chips for this platform. Even though the x86 architecture is inefficient, it became the largest market so they invested making faster x86 processors. Fast forward to today, we have super fast, inefficient processors that exist solely because Microsoft never decided to use a better architecture. If Microsoft had better programming practices, Windows would be cross platform but of course their software sucks, so this is not the case.
As history shows, the better technologies do not win most of the time... the most widespread ones do.
Replace your NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Atari, Mame with a hacked XBox. It can run all of the mentioned systems pretty much flawlessly, and it's all-in-one.
if these companies practiced good software design patterns and started from the beginning to make things potentially portable, there would be a very low "cost of porting".
isn't portable == bad software design. period.
the software developer didn't modularize enough of the sub components into sections that can be separated and reused for different platforms.
this guy doesnt really know whats going on... the kernel is loading and he calls it "compiling the kernel" and by running startx he claims it is starting the "fedora gui" (which in a sense is true...).
My gosh, don't these people know that the largest atmospheric polluter is not automobiles but our coal power plants? As far as I remember, automobiles produce ~30% of our C02 emissions, while coal power plants account for ~40% of our C02 emissions (and not to mention the other pollutants they produce).
It is possible to design nuclear plants to preform electrolysis on the off-hours when the load is low. What does a nuclear power plant do? Boils lots of water. When the load is low, they can run the extra current directly thru the water that was just boiled. Yes, it is not the most efficient power conversion, but we have so much nuclear fuel available why not use it? Sometime in the future we will figure out what to do with the waste. We are a smart race. Worse case we can just launch it into the sun or in a trajectory pointing away from our planet.
Is nuclear that bad? We have known the properties of the splitting atom for decades now... we should have a good understanding of how to utilize this abundant resource. The waste is manageable. Is the waste of a coal plant manageable? Once you spew all that C0_2 and other by-products into the atmosphere there is no (sane) way to recapture it.
Nuclear is our future. Give in to our nuclear overlords.
Yes, my experience is the same... fine tune a ship with a huge hole on its side.
Using dualhead is just unusable because the driver fucks up X and requires a full restart of the system each time I want to change users. Opengl apps crash randomly. It's just sad...
Nvidia all the way guys! Don't fall for the cheap ATI cards!
No... pronounciation has not drifted in recent times. With TV and radio, our pronounciation has more and more so become unified accross the country. Go watch/listen to any media from 50s and tell me if you can pick up any words that are not pronounced the same today.
i wish you could mod articles down... but you cant... so these kinds of stupid articles reach the front page of slashdot. i am getting more and more tired of stuipd articles showing up on the front page... anyone else agree?
crashing? dont load mega-websites on a machine with sixty-four megs of ram. lots of sites work fine.
does little? there are tons of emerging third party apps emerging... did that guy even check the maemo wiki page?
most useful third party app on the seven-seventy is fbreader. lets you read any txt files rotated or not, large/small fonts and so on. most of your standard ebook features are there.
another useful app is the xterminal. if you ever use ssh to connect to remote sites to do stuff, you'll find this xterm-in-your-pocket highly useful.
try a greasemonkey script like HQTube that replaces the flash player with mozilla-mplayer or any other player that can play flv files directly.
