I'd wager a large sum that there'll be no new tax per se, but the television license will be changed to say you need one if you have "any device capable of receiving programme broadcasts". By 2017 that'll include your brain. Maybe.
These blogging sites are great for getting stats with big numbers that will impress the money men, like page impressions, and users, and gigs of bandwidth.. but what about the revenue? People aren't actually very willing to pay for somewhere to write their blog, you can't run a multi-million dollar business on the back of T-Shirt merchandising sales, and online advertising is a business model shown to be flawed in the late 90s..
So if I were to invest in on of these companies, where would my stock dividends be coming from?
Or is it another case of a dot.com investor not really understanding what they're buying into?
Other way round in my case. Ooer.com used to be porn, and now its my homepage. Its great to have a short, pronouncable URI.. but I suffer a lot of spam all coming to someone called "Cecile Lover".:S
Apple US website: 2. Do not eat iPod shuffle. Apple UK website: 2. Do not chew iPod shuffle.
Do Americans not have the word 'chew'?

Since when has the US protected the UK? If you think the US is protecting the UK you're seriously mistaken. We can look after ourselves pretty damn well thanks.
You missed the point in my post. Coders write quick'n'dirty VB apps with the intention of redoing them in (for example) C++ later. The management then come in and want to release the quick'n'dirty version. I'm not suggesting you can't write robust VB code, I'm saying lots of people don't.
Besides which, Microsoft realised people use VB as a proper language instead of a RAD tool now, and they smartened it up a lot a few versions ago. Go back to the mid 90s and VB was NOT a stable dev platform.
VB was only ever meant to be a rapid prototyping tool. You knock up a quick'n'dirty VB version as a proof of concept, then you write the proper version in a more robust language. Unfortunately the management/lazy coders almost always step in with "but we have a working version there.. lets release that".
If people used VB in the way it was meant to be used noone would have any complaints about it. (well, fewer complaints at least..)
Most laptops simply aren't portable enough. I've got a JVC Mininote. My laptop (ultra-sub-notebook technically) fits in my coat pocket. Its a little larger than 2 DVD cases stuck back to back. Its lovely.
The article only states that the websites were 'illegal', not the actual law the sites broke. If these were child porn, for example, they'd have been shut down in any number of other countries. The 114 shut down for promoting gambling etc is a little more sinister, but again, theres lots of places in the UK and USA you're not allowed to promote gambling..
There isn't really enough information in the article to say either way whether or not China has actually done anything particularly bad, or indeed different to the way western governments would have reacted.
It is a DOS attack. The screensaver denies the spammers their internet service. If they're paying for a 10mbit connection and getting a 128kbit connection then they're being denied the service they pay for.. The fact it doesn't completely deny their service is irrevelevant.
Seriously, I'm not asking in jest. Is there a problem with the technology as it stands?
Yes. It'd be a pain in the arse for web developers.
All these single sign-in systems are made (or broken) by the web developers who implement them in the sites they build. If theres an easy way to integrate the technology into your code quickly and cheaply then people will put it in. If it takes a week of reading docs and another week of coding then its never going to get used by the people who'll be rolling it out onto the net.
Everyone should go out today, buy a copy, take it home, VIOLENTLY rip it open so the box is wrecked, and then take it back to the shop for a refund coz it doesn't work.
The box being damaged means the shop can't just resell it..
What this could lead to is some sort of "space terrorism". Imagine if someone launched a conventional bomb into space packed with a couple of hundred thousand small steel ball bearings, and detonated it... hell, what if they sent 20 of them up? Millions of lethal (to anything in orbit) weapons effectively stopping *any* space exploration for the foreseeable future.
Its certainly not outside the reach of governments such as china, india or pakistan. What would these people be willing to do in order to protect themselves from American weapons?
Another set of the rules for the prize require that any contestant reside and do business in the United States.
Err.. right. OK. Thats very philanthropic of Burt.
No, wait, its not. Its a load of stupid "America is teh best!" crap. He really doesn't give a shit about making life better for humanity, just his own little country. Heres hoping China and India's space programmes kick the flying bastard shit out of Burt and NASA alike.
There were 2 of them though. If one were dressed as a terrorist, and the other as a counter-terrorist.. then its quite clear they were inspired by the game.
Not at all. I work with Mal who authors the DVDanswers site. The server is mighty busy at the moment, but hes cleverly made the code automatically switch over to the lower bandwidth, non-dynamic, advert laiden version when the traffic increases beyond a particular threshold.
When your site gets slashdotted 3 times in a couple of months you're prompted to take such measures.
Note that "forums.merkey.net" is the "winner of the first round of Nigritude Ultramarine", an SEO competition to find new ways to get things in search engines. The entire thing is liberally scattered with references to Seraphim Proudleduck, which I can only guess is round 2.
This entire thing is an attempt to win a competition designed to find new ways to spam Google.
We would like to apologize to you and to those who frequent the suicidegirls.com website for inadvertently contacting you about a fan posting on the website.
We know that many of our fans are old enough to make their own choice about what they want to view on the Internet. We value the support of our fans and we respect their decisions. The letter was sent as part of an ongoing Nintendo program to aggressively protect our younger consumers from the hundreds of sexually-explicit sites each year that use Nintendo properties to attract children. We are proud of our efforts in this area. Unfortunately, the site posting identified in our letter was targeted by mistake.
As a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer you (and RuneLateralus) a free Nintendo video game system and game of your choice. (...)
In addition, we would appreciate it if you could provide us with contact information for RuneLateralus, or have him contact us directly, so that we may apologize to him. We would be glad to send him a game and system of his choice through you as well, since we do not have his contact information.
Sincerely, Christie Hamilton Nintendo of America Inc. Consumer Service Department
Inadvertently threatening legal action? Oh. Whoops! Sorry! Is that the legal version of "friendly fire"?
If you want to be successful:
1. don't screw up, and
2. succeed.
Actually most successful people fail quite a lot. The point is that they succeed one or more times. Those who fail are the ones who give up.

They always have. Its just now Slashdot is so desperate for cash they're actually accepting the stories.
I don't think Slashdot is going to last much longer if this sort of thing continues.

Apple couldn't find the internal leak, so they're shooting the messenger.. Not the nicest tactic ever.
You'd know all about scams...

Gotta wonder if that Xequte guy paid for the Natalie Imbruglia images hes using in the screenshots of his software really..
Pot. Kettle. etc.

Vivendi and the shops would lose a fortune.
Just goes to show the punishment for drunk driving, selling crack and rape are too lenient, not that the punishment for spam is too harsh.

Well done Slashdot, what a guy to help out..
