Piracy is killing ... the PC gaming industry

The list goes on just keep adding your industry above and blame it on the pirates.

Much like the movie industry, PC gaming has been terrible. I haven't "pirated" a game since I was a kid on my Commodore 64 like 20 years ago. I've bought several over the years and really wish there would be some worth buying these days. I've ranted about "The Bard's Tale" a couple weeks back and I won't go there again. Out of the 50 or so titles I've purchased in the last 10 years, I can't say that beyond installation and the first hour or two of playitme I've liked them. Looking in my game bin, I have several decent titles I've still enjoy ... two MMO games (Everquest and WoW) along with some FPS games that were fun - Star Wars Battlefront I & II. Couple of other off the wall titles but for the most part the gaming industry has been suffering from good titles.

I hate Brussel Sprouts. I hate them now. I hated them yesterday. I will hate them tomorrow. I will hate them forever. Why? You can put butter, cheese, ranch dressing or just about anything you want on them. They are still brussel sprouts and I will refuse to eat them. I also equate this to Real Player. If I encounter some media that requires Real Player then I guess it's not important enough for me to see it. You can dress it up however you want it's still Real Player and I just had enough of it that I'll never use it no matter how you package it.

Sorry MS & Sony ... although your products are cool I can't afford them and won't pay $600+ for a console. Hell, I can't even substantiate that amount for a PC. As long as Nintendo sticks the price around $250, I'll buy it. Hell for that price, I could buy two Wii consoles. These devices are disposable -- by the time the 360, PS3 and Wii have been out for a year the fight for the next-next-gen consoles will start.

You are so right on top of it. The game companies are releasing CRAP. I bought "The Bard's Tale" (2005 remake) for $50 only because I *knew* it also had the three original Bard's Tale games bundled with it. It's sad, it's true ... but the "new" version of Bard's Tale gameplay is terrible, quirky and the dialog is a mess. I installed the original three 1980's releases of The Bards Tale and played each one for about 20-30 hours and was like WOW! I had forgotten how much fun those were for their time. I showed the games to my kids and they laughed at me it was really cute. My kids did to me what I did to my parents when they reminisced on the Atari 2600 ;)

So, what, is war now something that you can't go to without first passing some tests? People aren't allowed to defend their land from invasion by a foreign force without first checking in with the head-office and reading "7 Habits of Highly Effective Soldiers" and "Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned at the Geneva Convention"?

I think people are quick to dismiss the rights of those held in Cuba; if our places were reversed and it was a Middle Eastern country invading the US to spread Shariah Islamic Law, would you be so quick to condemn your countrymen--fellow citizens--caught fighting that force? Because they're disorganized and haven't been through boot camp?

    (bold emphasis mine for clarity)

I may be misinformed, but I dont recall the vast majority of those held captive in Cuba as being Iraqi Citizens, but rather from bordering or neighboring countries. If that is truly the case, your point is not valid.

Yes, I do the same. Actually, I get better game performance running under cedega than Windows. I can use the virtual desktop switching to play WoW on one desktop fullscreen, then one hotkey away from any of the other apps I'm running ... such as Evolution, Firefox and my remote desktop sessions, pron, etc. In windows, I'm stuck with screen focus or a "windowed" mode, with crippled system performance to everything else. I usually can't run anything in the background while playing and games.

On the downside, though, for the MMORPGs through Cedega, whenever there is a major patch I often have to wait a few days for the Cedega team to fix what was "broken". Very rare, but it happene a lot on EQ and has started to happen from time to time with WoW. For the other games that aren't patched routinely, I have no problems at all.

... well the what if would be that MS would then file an official complaint with the courts. That could lead to a legal snafu where ALL computer equipment could be siezed as evidence, thereby effectively shutting down the business (or, in this case, the local gov't). That's a move that can't even be considered by even the smallest of companies.
