  1. Making Gnutella Better! on How Are You Spending Your Christmas Vacation? · · Score: 2

Ok fine, I have spent a good deal of the day with my family.

They are watching a movie now though, so instead of that I'm on my parents new computer (P4 1.6 for only $400, wow!) editing a proposal that I recently submitted for review on the GDF.

I'm also answering personal e-mails and surfing the good old web.

    Merry Christmas Slashdot!!

it'll be interesting to see if any overt enmity develops between these two stanford-born businesses....

and gimli was unfairly cast as a clown. the guy killed 49 orcs during one battle in the book but he can't keep up with aragorn and legolas during their manly run in the movie.

and how did merry and pippin not only manage to TRICK treebeard into destroying isengard, but they also ensured that the whole lot of other ents were in the woods when treebeard conveniently got hot. very cheap and prostethic, the usual hollywood crapola....

What? All Miyamoto has done throughout his career is making truly awesome and different games!! The idea of a platform game (the original mario); the epic action adventure (zelda series); bringing videogames into 3D (mario 64). Virtually every project he has made or simply produced has been stellar.
Pikmin is a great example of a 'different' game. Has anyone played the latest Metroid (Prime)- the BEST GAME ever. And the next Zelda will be out in March (Metroid may have a short-lived stay at the top).

I've been a videogamer since 85, so I know what this man has brought to every console generation. Nintendo might have to freeze this guy like Disney froze Walt ;) .

I liked the article in general though - this man is truly a GOD. I don't care if his games are cutesy - they are the BEST!

"Is it that perhaps this will spur new R&D in wireless devices and protocols to use this new spectrum, returning value to the economy this way? Or is there something I'm missing?"

I think most Americans agree that creating a market to handle allocation of a scarce resource is a good (best?) way to use that resource efficiently. This has been the usual thinking when it comes to auctioning spectrum - let the company that thinks it will make the most money (ie 'use') from owning the spectrum have the rights to it. But there is another line of thinking that advocates freeing up spectrum. If we could 'packet switch' spectrum, creating a commons where applications define its use (e.g. the 'end-to-end' architecture of the net), then new businesses could be built on top of this spectrum. That would generate more money in the long term than auctioning off the spectrum to *one* owner.

i'm just not sure what they can do about it - they seem to be scared that overturning the bono act could cause a recursive destruction process that will throw copyright law into a messy state. they've been creative before, so i'm still faithful.
for my part, i think that the issues are clear - articles like these are good but redundant. we need to take action - contact your representative, contribute to the EFF, or join the fight yourself. i'll take option 3, just give me a few years to get my law degree....

Visit the GDF. You'll find info on various components of Gnutella2 - Ultrapeers, Remote Queueing, HUGE, Meta-Data Support, and GUESS. Unlike Shareaza's features, all these enhancements were cooperatively developed and open upon introduction. Shareaza has only published the IDEOLOGY behind their protocol, it is still not open - the lack of detailed specifications is startling.

  17. Expanded Uses of Gnutella on Gnutella2 Specs - Part 1 · · Score: 2

At LimeWire we are definitely trying to extend Gnutella's uses. One project we are working hard on is making it easy to build private networks. Currently Gnutella is a public network, but people may want to form private groups to share private material.
A 'real world' example: a Art History department may want to share digital photos of art with faculty and students but not have to maintain a dedicated server. They can utilize the power of p2p if they could easily form a private network, one that would leverage the CPU and bandwidth of all participating users.
Currently it is hard to *only* connect certain nodes or only *allow* certain nodes to connect. We are working on a complete solution at LimeWire. The first iteration will allow a tech admin to easily set up a private network. The second iteration should incorporate privacy and security to keep out unwanted guests (supported by a username / password infrastructure).

Obviously, private secure networks can be utilized by criminals and terrorists to exchange potentially illegal information. Nevertheless, the same can be done with PGP, secure telephones, etc. already. There is a lot of truth in the statement that p2p networks are defined by the users, not the developers.

  18. Not Gnutella2! Shareaza1!!! on Gnutella2 Specs - Part 1 · · Score: 3, Interesting

As a developer of open-source software for the OPEN Gnutella protocol, I find publishing of THE Gnutella2 spec by ONE development team laughable. The spec may be revealing about how the latest Shareaza client works, but to say it describes Gnutella2 is NOT true. The Shareaza guys simply use Gnutella to boostrap their new 'Shareaza1' network, they haven't redefined the Gnutella protocol.

The truth is that Gnutella2 is on the way, but not from Shareaza. Gnutella2 is a loose connection of various enhancements to the Gnutella network that have been implemented over the last year or so by SEVERAL COOPERATING Gnutella vendors. The latest enhancement is GUESS, which was introduced before Shareaza's new searching methodology and seems to be Shareaza's inspiration.

The Shareaza people continue to attempt to preempt Gnutella as THEIR protocol, when in fact they are pretty much branching off from the network. Shareaza should feel free to leave the OPEN Gnutella network, but please don't try to steal a name that belongs to the users and developers of Gnutella.

i'm a (not so proud ;) ) xbox owner, and while i'm excited about various applications (sega's games, xbox live), the xbox is already #3 in this console war and will stay that way. the main reason is their DISAPPOINTING presence in japan (which is virtually non-existent). you simply can't win a console war without support from nihongo developers and users.

that said, i don't this MS really cares. for a first iteration console they've done well, and you can kind of think of xbox as a testbed for future MS consoles (especially xbox live). also, they only have some 50 billion left in the bank (oh, the convenience a desktop OS provides!).

my bet is that xbox2 will come out BEFORE ps3 simply because first-mover momentum in the industry has become more important. the ps2 is hard to develop for, but the installed base is NUTS so developers flock to the ps2. MS realizes this so i wouldn't be surprised xbox2 comes out by 2004ish.

also, i'm not positive who is funding his research (that info is all public, if you look you can find out for sure), but i think it isn't corporate in nature - i think it is the defense dept. the US defense element has a high interest in securing p2p networks from attack since future military operations might be based on p2p technologies.

  25. Gnutella2 - The real story! on Gnutella2? · · Score: 5, Informative

I'm a engineer at Lime Wire LLC so I can debunk much of this submission. Shareaza's Gnutella2 isn't so much the second iteration of Gnutella - instead, think of it as a improved Gnutella . In fact, the improvements were actually proposed by Lime Wire LLC (consult the GDF and look for messages about 'GUESS'). The GUESS protocol is a UDP based protocol we developed to allow for Gnutella network crawls/walks. We introduced it for public comment on the GDF *before* releasing it because we understand that Gnutella, as a open protocol, needs support from all Gnutella developers. I'm not sure what exactly Shareaza has implemented (because they HAVE NOT released the specs yet), but it sounds a lot like GUESS.

So this isn't so much Gnutella2 as a improved Gnutella. Perhaps one day it will evolve into Gnutella2 more formally, but at the moment this talk of Gnutella2 is premature.
