The only way Gandalf would be powerful enough to directly confront Sauron (the first of The Creators disciples, btw) would be by wielding the ring, which would then put him directly under the power of Sauron, thus unable to fight him...
So, Gandalf is forced to lead out a merry game of misdirection to keep the attention of Sauron focused away from the hobbits while trying to preserve as much of middle earth as possible. If Gandalf were to charge directly into Mordor with the ring it would be like lighting a huge beacon fire and jumping up and down, shouting "Over here! Over here!" The only reason that Frodo is not overwhelmed by Sauron is because Sauron does not know that Frodo has the ring. If Sauron were to directly bend all of his will on Frodo, the ring bearer would quickly become a mindless zombie. (which is why the entire story is obliterated when Peter Jackson has Frodo reveal the ring in Two Towers)
Because Gandalf can only be in one place at a time, he has devoted the last several hundered years to choreographing events in such a way that others will perform the actions required to bring about the desired outcome of destroying Sauron's power and saving the free world. (see: "reverse temporal engineering" Douglas Adams, Mostly Harmless)
Seriously, this is a problem that ICQ dealt with almost 10 years ago with the "only accept messages from authorized users" Anybody that is still getting this so called "spim" either needs to learn to read, or find a decent IM client. </rant>
Why don't we call it the enslaved artist game. It could discuss how record industry executives enslave bands and sign them into dead-end contracts by lying to the band and telling them that The Company really wants to work with then band. As a game, the children could be split into two groups. Group one could be the "Record Executives" and group two could be "The Band". The game would start with the Record Executives telling the Band how cool they are and buying them a round of drinks. This would then be followed by the Band be "bound by a contract"--this could be eneacted by tying the children into their chairs to really graphically illustrate how binding a contract is. After a week of being tied into their desks and completely ignored, the Record Executies would then untie the Band just long enough to "produce an album" at this point the Band would be stripped naked tied up and thrown out into the hallway.
At the end of the game the students that have not been comletely psychologically destroyed and sent away to an assylum would be asked, "how does this make you feel?"
Share the following statements with the students to summarize the lesson with the class. -To legally own it, you have fair use rights -It is not possible to "steal" intellectual property -Copying a movie or CD from a friend is legal (well, in Canada anyway) -If you wouldn't let someone bend you over then counter and fuck you up the ass, why let them do it online?
If every/.er paid $1 we could afford to introduce this program to the schools!
I think perhaps you are misundertanding the viewpoint of/.ers.
Popup blocking is to web-browsing as pepperoni is to pizza. A nice, tasty option that most people quite enjoy but isn't pre-requisite to the pizza experience.
Microsoft bundling is much more akin to putting the knife, fork, plates, serviettes and a couple of chairs and table for good measure, in with the pizze. Sure they are nice things to have, and some people actually eat pizza with the aforementioned utensils, but, really, WTF are they doing in with my pizza!?!
Personally, I suspect that the ITMS may be too small to survive: if revenue is around $30 million and none of that is profit, there is no real budget to promote it. But at least it's a try, and Apple should be given full credit for trying.
who needs a promption budget when posting to slashdot is free?
check out net2phone. They are a complete VOIP solution provider. So the phones/software/etc is all proprietary and only works with their service, but the rates are pretty incredible and it's damn simple to setup from inside a firewall.

OK, here's a translation. It doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me, but I'm a bit curious about a couple of things. What's with the bit about a "stratospheric balloon" and what were they using at 6000mW?
Isn't that pretty much how Windows(TM) Update(TM) works already. I can enable automatic updates, or I can shut it off. Win2K comes with it turned on by default.
Perhaps a better solution would be for any "home" version to have an automatic updater that pops up a big red warning box into the middle of the screen telling users they need to patch and a little sliding theremometer scale to show the severity of the patch.
Yes, but the "companies" are really as bad as(if not worse than) the thieves. By using their power and money they have lobbied for the laws that say receiveing a radio signal is illegal. They have lobbied for the laws that extend copyright to practically infinity. They have spend the money on the advertising campaigns to brainwashing you into beleiving that they are right.
It is the companies that are hoarding cash and exploiting the workers--do you have any idea how badly most recording artists are shafted by big media companies?
Do you really believe that content scrambling is at all necessary in DVD's? The "thieves" just find ways around it. The only thing that CSS does is make life difficult for the people that have an honest right to fair use.
Large corporations are so outdated in their modes of thought that they are unable to adapt to the modern market-place. Information has always had great value be it radio broadcast, a divx download, or a line of text in a book. That is the trouble and the beauty with information. once I know something, I can tell you without having to lose it myself.
The whole spirit of law is to fairly represent the will of the majority of the people. When a few rich and powerful people take advantage of the systems of government to enforce an unfeasable business model that is tyranny!
Does this mean that they have just opened them up to a great big class action suit. After all, if they have already admitted to being at fault for half of the crashes. Let's do the math here:
Number of Windows machines x frequency of crash x man hours lost waiting for re-boot x 1/2 = many^lots
Did you merrily click past the GPL that said if it destroyed your system and data it wasn't Linus's fault or responsibility? Did you install on one box and then do a complete round of System Test, or did you just blindly trust Linux?
Buy from a manufacturer that doesn't force you to buy windows as part of the package. If everyone did this, the manufacturers that force you to buy windows would all go out of business and that would be the end of the story.
Then again, maybe there are enough people out there (read: the majority) who don't give a rat's ass about Linux and are quite happy with windows because they don't want to spend weeks f*ing around just to get a functional desktop and weeks more trying to find an office application that really only works half-assed and then only works at half speed and the same for a browser and email client all this because they want to write to mom and read the joke of the day.
Perhaps the answer to this is some sort of negligence charge. The DOI sues the guy that didn't do his job and cost the department a small fortune in legal fees, etc. On top of that a class action suit from the American Public against the guy that didn't do his job and cost the taxpayers millions. And then a spanking--the bare bottomed sort, and after that cut him into little pieces and boil them and oil and stomp on them until...until...until, he's had enough, and then do it all over again!!!
Maybe someone should get those FBI guys from the Interview to go after the RIAA. After all the RIAA is downloading music for which they do not own the copyright. They themselves are turning into pirates.
Yes, in the good old days, we used to have these things called "text books" that were made up of many "lectures" or "chapters". During the meeting of students and professor we would discuss the "required readings" that were assigned during the last meeting and expand upon them, usually working through some examples and various illustrations. This was followed up by Q&A time.
I think you are not quite understanding the definition of bandwidth here. The available bandwitdh of any given transmission medium is completely independant of the storage medium on either end. i.e. just because you have a slower hard drive, doesn't mean your network has less capacity. If your data is stored on tape, it doesn't matter if you read the tape remotely and stream the data to your hard-drive, or teleport the tapes to your locality and read the tapes there. Bandwidth simply refers to the available capacity of a particular frequency range, or band. So, to illustrate:
Assume a reasonable tape capacity (say 80GB DLT) with dimmensions of roughly 15cm x 12cm x 3 cm = 540cm^3
A station wagon's cargo area (we're talking a good old-fashioned woody wagon here!) is roughly 140cm x 180cm x 60cm = 1512000 cm^3
This is 1512000cm^3 / 540cm^3 = 2800 tapes.
2800 x 80 = 224TB
So, to compare this to the speed of ethernet (10Mb/s) How long would it take Ethernet to transport 224TB?
224TB=224000000MBx8 = 1792000000Mb
1792000000Mb / 10Mb/s = 179200000s
179200000s / 3600s/hr ~= 49778 hrs
49778hrs / 24hrs/day ~= 2074 days
Therefore it would take 2074 days or almost 5.5 years to move that much data across ethernet. I could move a station wagon full of tapes anywhere on the planet in much less time(hell, I could move a staion wagon full of tapes to Mars in that much time!) So ultimately the staion wagon full of tapes has much higher bandwidth that most of todays data transport technologies.
Well, for that matter, most spammers are already breaking several laws, from fraud andidentity theft to unauthorized access of a computer system. Hell, I think most spammers, if nothing else, are at least guilty of mischief.
The problem, while it may be a social one, wil not be solved by passing yet another law.
The point behind a technical solution is to help people identify spammers so that existing laws can be enforced.
If you really want to send a loud and clear message to spammers try a lynch mob and a couple of burning crosses!

Do you pay royalties to the Pytahgoras estate everytime you draw a circle?
I'm not sure why people have such a problem grasping the concept: you can't "steal" something that is intangible.
Do they have a different CD for ATI cards?
Ahhh, that makes a whole lot more sense :)
