  1. Could somebody explain this? on A Plasmonic Revolution for Computer Chips? · · Score: 1

I get the moving lots of data around at massive speeds concept. However, how about some basic logic gate or even a transistor like functionality using plasmons? Wouldn't THAT be what would bring faster chips closer?
I mean, having a pipe that can transport huge amounts of data at the speed of light is great, but wouldn't the feasibility of a chip depend on the capability of routing all that data based on basic logical conditions?

Kinda like no use having a missile that can carry a million tons and fly at Mach 100 if you can't control where it goes...

  7. Poor parenting, not games, seems to be the cause on Senator Clinton Slams GTA · · Score: 1

Mod parent up. I agree with him completely.

Parents have less and less time for their kids nowadays. What's the solution? Buy them a PS2. Buy them a comp. Tell them "Go play a game, go watch TV" when they want to spend time with you. Then sue a game company when crazy stuff starts happening to your kid because you did not do your duty by giving them the attention they deserve.

I have seen kids who play a lot of games, but who aren't affected by them. Why? Because they have really good parents who care for them and take time out for them and they know it. To them, a game is just a game - something to play to have fun - and not something used to fill a void. The sooner people start recognizing this, the better.

You know, why don't we examine the parents of the kids who do what "games are teaching them"? Isn't it supposed to be the parents who "teach them"? Maybe we all could learn something if we looked at both sides of the coin for a change.

Sorry for the rant, but it had to be said.

As for Senator Clinton, she's doing what all politicians do: try and get votes. I find it very convenient that she has ignored the scores of educational games out there - I mean, a game like Civilization III can teach a kid SO MUCH about history and the evolution of technology.

Let's always present a balanced view please and let's not trust politicians to do it for us.

I read this story and agreed with it. However, I went through the comments to see what the GNOME fanboys had to say about it (every desktop has a fanboy, but that doesn't mean they don't talk sense sometimes).
The amazing part is that EVERYONE was saying that they needed to make the build process easier. EVERYONE. Fanboys and all. There was not ONE response to the contrary that I could see.
So have we actually got something that could help GNOME here? Maybe the GNOME devs ought to listen. I bet they are :D

Have some decency. Recognize genius and respect it. What have you accomplished? Even 1/10th of what any respected scientist has? Don't you expect people to call you by your name and not "hey you"? Why not give the same respect to others?

I'm also surprised that the Slashdot editors let this story be published without correcting it!! What, are story submissions now governed by a perl script?

I think you mis-understood me. I suggested only changing the default install so it uses the testing branch.

All I am suggesting is add more users to the default testing branch by making THAT the default branch for an install. Those who want to use the Stable branch can always do so.

The Testing, Stable and Unstable branches already exist. Nobody is adding any new branches. All we're doing is increasing the number of users testing new software by an order of magnitude. Won't that help in catching bugs faster, faster fixes and ultimately, a better release schedule?

Please try to understand a person's point before you criticize.

Well, how about adding in a "server" branch? Those in the know can use this - it will be what used to be called the "Stable" branch. However, for 90%+ of home Linux users, they would like the latest releases, so how about setting the default to "Testing"? It would make sure that most default installs have quite up-to-date packages with minimal bugs, while expanding the testing base greatly.

I have never had a problem with the Testing branch - it's been stable enough for me and been running for well over a year with supervised updates and I love it.

As a desktop user, what I wouldn't like is seeing KDE 2.2 come up after installing Debian after I have just seen all the news on the net about the 3.4 release. KDE 3.3 would be fine and I'd be willing to wait some time for 3.4 to get to me, but 2.2 would be un-acceptable. I would have been much happier if the install simply defaulted to the testing branch and installed even KDE 3.2.
