In NY called a code [somenumber] Utillities have 48 hours to mark their lines when you call. Some do it off plans. The gas line folks has a detector to mark it exactl location (within a foot).
Cnet has ms reaction to firefox. Its not a threat. Quote "I don't agree that just because a (competing) product has a feature that we don't have, that feature is important," he said. "It is not. It is only important if it is a feature the customer wants. There are plenty of products out there with features we don't have. We have plenty of features that our customers don't use."
I would expect microsoft to say, firefox is better than pull ie off of windows. Oh wait its not april 1st.
I have a cassete adapter.. New radio doesn't have tape player..Don't have a radio one. I have been thinking about that option. I like the mp3 player because the controls are local and the mpe player has a big old display..
I bought songs with itunes music store..I have an ipod, I butned ausio cds, life was good..
Then I got a car with a cd mp3 player... And thats where things started to crumble. I coulldn't burn mp3 cds with songs I had bought , only songs I had ripped. I could convert them to mp3s, but its time consuming. If I was using real/microsoft I would have the same problem. So all my purchased itunes songs are on regular cds.
While I understand apples need to include DRM to keep music b iz people happy, unless the DRM is ubiqitous its not going to work well, Even MS is going to have trouble doing this.
I've been using Transmit another product from Panic software, for a couple years now. Its a FTP client and so much better than anything else out there that I've upgraded from the command line and bought a licence.
There was a dilbert in which Dilbert tells dogbert he's thinking of getting acupuncture. Dogbert says "the theory here is pooking yourself with needles make you feel better."
Dilbert "When you put it like that it sounds stupid"
Dogbert "sometimes sarcasm can make you think more clearly"

The tracy kidder book is quite good, about the creation of a new Data General Computer. Although that book too will likely make anyone reading it question if they want to be an engineer. Won a pulizer prize if I remember correctly.
My cousin tried to switch off AOL. His Kids raised Holy hell because of the IM and email accounts. ALthough I'm pretty sure you can use AOLIM without AOL...
Anyway he tells me if you "bring your own access" AOL is 1/2 the price.
Eclipse also binds to native gui widgets using SWT as its windowing library (ie it calls native window/ mac or Linux (Qt?)) widgets which makes java faster.
eclipse also allows "plug ins" that enhance functionality.
The new Tivos have a dvd-r. It would cut down on selling of sports dvds if you can just "burn your own" so content makers are going to freak. It still doesn't seem to restrictive since I don't watch pay per view or the NFL.
I did my afternoon slashdot break. I'm hitting "reloading" thinking, my company must be caching the pages now or something... No new stories. Whats going on.
Having used an apple//e for physics lab data back in the day. If the appleworks spreadsheat got too big you could watch it recalculate when you changed certain values.
So while I agree computers software might not be as efficient as when everthing was written in assembly, software today is significantly faster.
Ada is Pascals "child" so to speak. The sytax is pretty close. The more I use ada the more I like it although not without its quirks. Its not hard to pick up, and gcc will compile it.
Although calling Ada a success would be pushing it, it seems my companies large projects work best in ada, then c and c++ is always a disaster.
Ada lacks a lot of libraries that make java/ c so useful. But as someone pointed out (with a chuckle), you can bind Ada calls to C making it as powerful as C!
I can see that as seeing the record spinning is something different as most of us regularly play cds.. Oddly enough in my semi gig as an event photog, I've seen some DJs now using just a laptops. They have computer printed songs to pick from.
Of course scracting and mixing is much better done on records.
Some people do hear better than others. however LPs are terrible.
I had lots or records and great turntables (AR and technics). Records were a nightmare. Static, cleaning dust with disc washer etc.etc.. Making sure the needle was wieght right. Then the sound was pretty excellent. Even with all that pre CDs still sounded better.
An playing LPs in your car was always easy.
No wonder they still selling millions of albums on "vynl"
Forbes says "Vertigo has topped the iTunes download charts since its debut three weeks ago". The itunes chart..
Is this the new metric on song popularity? It would seem to very accurate because you can track who would be willing to pay for a song rather than on an album by album basis..
IIRC they own anything you work on there. So if your working on laser diodes at IBM, and you happen to "invent" one on your own time and sell it to someone else they can come after you. But if your working on those diodes at IBM you can still write software free and clear.
I worked at IBM research. Basically if you develop something on IBMs time with IBMs resources they own it. A lot of companies are like that.
Some people like it because if IBM likes the idea they'll throw IBM resourses at it and let you develop it and pay you to do it.
They give you a lot of resourses to get your idea off the ground and will reward you if its a successful product. If its credit your looking for do it yourself.
They even tell the interns, if you have an idea and you want to develop it DON"t tell it to us.

The fm option does look better.

One of the theories is people who have debt load (In the US its easy to get lots of debt) will work very very hard to keep there heads above water.
The trouble is alot of people want that bigger house or flashy car without thinking about how exactly there going to pay it off.
I'd rather have less (condo) and not have to worry about a huge mortgage/car payments. Gives you more time and freedom.

And they drive around honking when "there" team wins. Its a strange phenomenon.

like this one tivo / burner from pioneer
Seriously, time shifting is much more usefull if you have talk radio. IIRC sirius has NPR and Howard, I don't think XM had alot of talk.
Time shifting just means you can skip the songs you don't like..

I don't like them because they only contain one brand. I like to look and compair. With a name brand store it doesn't work because its all sony stuff.
There is an outlet mall close to where I live. An oddly enough they have a sony outlet. Not much good stuff there though.

IIRC motorola had some CHRP boxes designed and almost ready to ship, about the same times jobs came back and pulled the plug on cloning altogether.
With no MACos motorola never released the CHRP (although it was rumored Beos would run on it)
I too use a regular 2 button optical mouse. The optical mouse that came with the mac is doing nothing. Its soo pretty and a sad sad waste.
apple should make 2 button mice..
