America/Europe/Canada is in trouble. Labor is cheaper elsewhere. Look at what this did to the textile business in the US.
And software is easier to import. And its comodification will drive the value of developer down.
Compaq laid off an entire department in the US and is moving the jobs to india. The US workers spending there last months training the people who are taking there jobs/
I have an epson 1270 printer. There is a chip in the cartridge that will prevent printing when its out of ink. I think there already are ways to work around this problem for 3rd party ink vedors.
The only problem I have is that when the 5 color ink cartridge is "out" is still seems to have alot of ink left.
My next printer will have induhvidual (sic) ink cartridges.
Apple makes video editing software: Final Cut Pro/ Final Cut and imovie.
These have become very popular even though they are very different the adobe video editing software.
Adobe can't complain about preferential pricing as Final Cut Pro is about $900 although Apple does give away imovie with macs.
It would make sense for Adobe to steer people to PC's where apple's video software is unavailable.
They might be shooting themselves in the foot though because apple uses PDF rendering and I assume pays adobe for the privledge. Also makes PDFs more popular (on osX you can save any document you can print as a PDF with no additional software)
I have apples X and I use Xemacs. Is there a easy way to make emacs or any X application act like a regular apple application? (You click on the icon it goes. Drag document to icon and it starts..).
I tried some quick applescript things but they didn't work./Aram
mlb.com They have a java aplett or something that shows a baseball diamond, who's up, The score/ pitch count of every game. During the playoffs They were showing where each pitch was (With a box for the strike zone.)
Its pretty incredible. Baseball is a very data intensive sport
I have to admit it , my housemates and I used to (video) golf when the pool table was jammed. Beers and video games are an interesting combo. It was fun though
Its fun to have friends over and play a multiplayer game as well.

Xbox Coming to Arcades

Arcade games by there very nature are different from many console games. Arcade games are very time limited as you usually have a bunch of people standing in line waiting. Console games don't have that limitation.
Many arcade to console conversion were very successful. I can't think of one where a console game made it into the arcades.
I downloaded and built perl for OSX. Perl Version 5.8.? built without a hitch.
Now you don't even need to build perl yourself. Get Fink Macos X version of Apt-get and get a perl binary. (I'm pretty sure one is available). Fink is a great tool for keeping all the gnu/opensource software up to date.
This is a classic example of the prisoners dilema problem.
Basically if everyone acts unselfishly they do better. But from each individuals perspective they do better when they act selfish, so it all falls apart. Its interesting stuff and the prisoners dilema game algorithms are interesting.
As far as I can tell, with few exceptions the point releases from apple always seem to make the machine work faster. This seems to be true since macos 8.
I think the philosophy is get it out there then spend some time optimizing it.
I still find it odd getting speed improvements without updating hardware, but I'm getting used to it.
Phish already is doing this.. as well as others

Instant Concert CDs?

A lot of bands with a history of allowing taping (greatful dead, phish , DMB). Now phish is selling all 2003 concerts. They're in both mp3 and shn formats. The SHN format costs more (more bandwidth)..
The have a good FAQ which answers the age old question...Why should I pay for when I can get an audience recording for free?
They Might Be Giants also gives away tracks on the internet. Better than the dial a song, which used to give away free songs over the phone.
Contrast this with the FooFighters annoying extra track download feature which doesn't work with Mac (Windows Media) and uses a special program which seems to check if the music cd is in the drive.. I like the band but that experience left a bad taste in my mouth.
The bottom line here is that creative bands can have alternative music distribution. This is good, unless your band is already signed, then the label can object.
The BSA have an ad on the radio in boston (on the clasiical music station no less). They have a fake interview with some BSA official.
He said that most of their leads come from unhappy employees and unless your company has all happy employees, make sure you do a audit during the grace period. You could pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for each unlicensed title..kinda a threating ad actually.
They also sent a co-worker a card with a flashing LED (It turned on when you opened the card.. Kinda neat actually). The card was basically telling him to rat out our company if they were using illegal software. Funny thing is we work in a Unix environment thats classified.. Not much commercial software there, and I know we pay dearly for the development tools we have. Plus the BSA couldn't get into the building legally so we wern't too woried. Nothing came of it.
I really have to say they're some of the easiest to use software, well designed, simple to use and fairly powerful. itunes/imovie/idvd are good examples of how an application should function. No crazy wizards, you just open the application and start working. You can get some nice polished results when done.
Applications are just tools, and the less you have to think about the application the more you can concentrate on using the tool to create. Sometimes as programmers we forget that those using the software aren't thinking the same way as we are.
There actions may drive you nuts , but what can you do. Your not paying them. They're defending the "Recording Industry" The fact they have the influence they do isn't there own fault. If you don't like it don't buy the music they produce..(I'm not advocating stealing it either by obtaining it and not paying for it..)
Slashdot shouldn't jump every time the RIAA does something..
I mean we all know by now those spec benchmarks really don't translate well into real world performance. He's got nothing else to go on but to say machine A is faster than machine B based on spec2000 alone is kinda nutty. Bus speed, memory bandwidth and a host of other factors effect machine speed.
Also I know POWER4 chips are made very conservativly so they don't fail as often, I'm assuming its the same for many of these other workstation chips.
Also the power consumption issue is glossed over quickly, but I'm hearing it getting to be a big deal. Power/ cooling costs are making some of these a difficult sell in the server room.
If you want to write an application for osX and you used X11, porting to linux would be much much easier.. So more applications will hopefully make there way from macos x to linux. I don't think many mac programs are X11, but if you wanted to program cross platfrom developers should start thinking about using it.
Linux/GNU has helped make OSX much better with fink (OSX version of debian app-get) which gives mac osX users easy access to install a lot of gnu software. I got perl/ ImageMagik and xemacs running on my osX box. Its a great thing.
The fact that gcc is the standard OSX compiler doesn't hurt either.
Green screen, TWO! floppy drives,128k , 80 column card, and dot matrix printer..
Welcome to the wonderfull world of computer depreciation.. Sometimes when you buy a new machine its best not to look at new hardware prices for a couple of years..Saves a lot of malox moments..

The car. The rodregres brothers. The parents who give ottos college fund to televangelists..

I would expect IBM to use its very very large patent portfolio to put the smack down on this law suit.
Is it really wise to sue the company that has been hoarding tons of patents for years?

.99$ per song.
Phish is selling live shows (3 cds) on mp3 for 10$. You can download the cd sleives and cd labels for free though!
13$ for better quality shorten files.
Live shows are much cheaper to produce than albums so the price seems fair at
Although it would depend on the song

The Aibo 2 has a watch dog mode where it takes a picture of everyone that enters it sight..
Doesn't send email though.
Hmmm good point..
Do we really want our machines forming unions, striking, having feeling etc. etc..
I want my machines doing what I tell them todo and not much else.
Ever seen those new robot toys.. They get into bad moods if you don't pay attention to them.. Enough to drive one nuts.
I always wondered how Terminators would take over...Now I don't have to wait for the movie..
Oh wait..
The animation seems to fit both stories..
Animation was quite well done though. Thank goodness its early.

I have a 4800 dpi 35 mm scanner.. I have scanned over 80 gigs of images.. It not that hard when each still is 90+meg (16 bit color per channel)..
They add up really quick. And if there your own images you can share them legally..
DO NOT CONVERT TO Jpeg.. That will save too much space!.. Save as uncompressed TIFF.
