  1. Motherboards an issue? on Athlon Overclocking - The AfterBurner · · Score: 1

I've had my Athlon 550 for a few months now, fully-loaded with the ASUS K7M.

Just about every computer store in Ottawa (Canada) has the K7M in stock. Even the onboard VIA audio just recently got inserted into the Linux Kernel (although I prefer the good ol' Sound Blaster).

I fail to see how the motherboard issue remains.

  2. Afterburner on Athlon Overclocking - The AfterBurner · · Score: 2

I spoke with the owner, and he said the afterburner works quite well. He actually sells systems pre-configured with the device in place.

Rock-on, but won't this (can this?) hurt AMD's sales for the high-priced, high-speed chips?

  3. Utter coolness on Loki Porting Alpha Centauri, Sim City 3k and More · · Score: 1

This is really cool. I wonder how lucrative porting games to Linux is? I think that Loki are making some kind of deficit right now, but as they port more and more games, Linux users all over will lighten up to the fact that an OS can be stable AND fun! I for one have purchased RRT2, Quake 3 and CIV:CTP. If they release SC3K, that'll be an addition to my collection. Canadian buyers: I get my Linux games at http://www.canux.com. It's not a huge mega-site, but at least I pay canadian $$$.

The lawsuit that Volkswagen lost for trying to get 'vw.net' is ridiculous. vw.net has nothing to do with Volkswagen, and they have no right to _claim_ that they should own it.

Now if someone registers microsoftsucks.com, what happens? Are Microsoft entitled to sue for damage to their reputation?

  8. The students need a kick in the pants too on How can we Keep Our Teachers Updated? · · Score: 3

I'm a teacher, and I stay up to date. But why should I even TRY to teach a class when most high-school students are just interested in chasing skirts and joking around?

I deliver interesting courses. No book reading here. I have them work on the computers, make interesting labs, and deliver interesting theory. But most high-school "jocks" aren't interested, and when a student feels he's taking a course for nothing, he'll never listen.

An uninterested student leads to an uninterested teacher. Most teachers get so sick of teaching, that when they start a new semester, the first thing on their mind is "how can I get rid of this bunch of students the easiest way possible".

Many things need change in the ed system. Not just the teachers. Some of those changes can start at home, with Mom and Pop.

  14. Load balancing - the easy way on Suggestions for a Startup Web Company · · Score: 4

I use different boxes for different type of content: ordinary Pentium 100's for the static pages and PII-350 + for dynamic content (perl, c++, asp). You could add a server just for images and graphics.

This type of load balancing is real easy, but it's not fail-safe: if one server dies, all the site is affected. That's why I have a few old boxes with replicated content that are ready to rock in case a server dies. All I need to change is the IP.

A T1 line is not very hard to saturate, and to some extent, only one server could probably manage the whole static/dynamic/graphic content.

We have a T1 line and host our own content. This way you get much better control. We use one tape backup per server, and investigate our logfiles as to when the best time to backup is. That's typically 3am for us.

I write software, and I make a living off selling my software. When I see someone pirate _any_ form of software, it makes my teeth cringe, knowing it's maybe my paycheck they're taking away.

And don't start saying 'Microsoft is plenty rich, I don't need to buy their software'. You forget about the economic roll when you say this. Think about the companies that make money from Microsoft: Printers, CD-ROM duplicators, software wholesalers, retailers, etc... They all lose money if you pirate software.

IRC Channels? There are so many warez servers out there, and most of them are run by kiddies who have no clue. If we start busting them, they'll be afraid. One less opportunity to obtain illegal software.

On the other hand, if I buy a car and that car crashes and does not perform as I expected it to, I will return the car to the dealer for a total refund. And if there is only one car dealer in the world and I have no choice but to buy their car, well, that's another story. Bottom line: some people pirate software because they don't have any choice but to use that software, but they feel they're being ripped off by paying hundreds of dollars for crap.

The kind of stuff you see in movies: retinal scans, fingerprints, or to any extent, using magnetized swipe-cards with your user info.
