I'm surprised at this news, as in every IT shop I've worked in that had foreign workers I found their programming skills to be excellent but their written English skills to be lacking. Oh, they learned English very well, don't get me wrong. But there is a world of difference between being able to speak English fluently and being able to write it correctly.

And you feel that it is Comcast's responsibility to provide this support for you? Shame on your user for getting infected. Double shame on your deparment for not taking any action to prevent or correct the infection.

I saw McAfee Antivirus for $9.99 after rebate last weekend. If that is too expensive or complicated for your client, "Mary End User" probably shouldn't be on the internet. If it is too expensive or complicated for your IT support staff, you might consider asking for a refund on your MCSE.

What do you expect the guys at sun to do if they turn the development of Java over to the open-source community?

I would expect them to maintain the main version of Java. They could watch the improvements made by the community and build the best one back into the product. It would develop much faster with more resources. If someone wanted to fork Java to take care of some specific task, fine. But the name still belongs to Sun. Even Microsoft could bring back their old Java stuff under the name MS Java. Of course, being open source, Microsoft would be required to release its changes to the public and the best could go back into Sun's Java.

I admit that I don't know what kind of revenue Sun derives from Java, but I don't think that it is huge. Improved, open Java could also lead to more improvements of the software built on top of it. Think about products like OpenOffice that could run on different OSs. If Sun is serious about SunLinux, a more accepted Java could be the base for cross-platform applications they could bundle with their Linux when they sell their hardware.

All good ideas, but not a sure thing. What would be the downside of opening Java?

Let me guess, your are one of SCO's lawyers, right?

If you are trying to argue to a judge that your code does not contain any stolen code, then SCO points out the alleged lines of stolen code and then as a result, you go changing it, you will have some serious explaining to do to the judge.

The case here is that IBM allegedly contributed code to Linux that was tainted by SCO's IP. Linux included the code in good faith. The code is now in dispute. Linux now removes the questionable code until the litigants can sort our the issues. There is no LEGAL harm to Linux. Simply put, they are not a party to this case. It is a contract dispute between IBM and SCO. Linux is a third party that is not directly involved in this case. Everything SCO says about Linux is in the press room and not the court room.

Furthermore, if Linux were the defendant and they decided to remove the code until the issue was settled, this would be acting in good faith. I can find no section in copyright law that states that if your are accused of infringing copyright, you must continue to infringe until it is proven in court that you are infringing. If you can quote code in this matter, please correct me.

I am not a lawyer, but I have studied law during my masters program.

The changes in the firmware are GPL'ed, right? Nothing is stoping Linksys from picking the enhanced features they want, putting them into one tested and supported package, and selling it in a box at Best Buy. More and more people are able to upgrade their firmware, but the majority would still rather have it just work out of the box with a nice 800 number to call if they can't figure it out. Plus, this saves development time and cost for Linksys that they can spend on other improvements
