This is true. Never was a parking brake and should never be used for parking. Might work in a warmer climate but where winters freeze... they can too. So you'll be parked for a helluva long time if you pick up some moisture in the cable.

As far as stick shift, the proper way to "park" is put it in low or reverse gear and turn your wheels to the curb.

Well back in the day when a show was picked up it ran 23 episodes per season. Today... lucky if they make 13. (If it even gets past the pilot) So more often than not that "new" show has 13 episodes and 13 reruns per season.

And gone are the days when your fav show came on say a Monday nite and you added that time to your schedule. Now... phttt... more often than not it's a rerun so folks pretty much got used to not wasting their time with anything.

  11. Marketing 102 on Meet The Man Who Designed a Tablet Computer 15 Years Before the iPad · · Score: 1

Most miss the point entirely. There is marketing and there's marketing 101. Jobs was up to marketing 2,847.3. He was a marketing genius.

It doesn't matter if they win or lose. The idea is to get the competition blocked from sales for as long as possible. The Mac or whatever gains ground while the competition has to sit on it's hands. Their (in this case, apple) market share increases. Their power increases.

If they can hold them off long enough, no one (where the competition was blocked) would even consider another product since everyone has a mac tablet (or whatever). It becomes the standard since while it was in litigation it's all they can buy..

The general population falls for it and wants "the real thing", not a rip off of the original. Even if that "rip off" is light years ahead of it. Pretty much sales by deception. The product doesn't have to be better. Just perceived as better.

  12. In days of olde' on Ask Slashdot: Do Kids Still Take Interest In Programming For Its Own Sake? · · Score: 1

Well, let's just say there is no reason anymore to program. Ok, hold it!!! LOL

Years past, when you first got a computer you were excited. Back then, you turned it on (boot was an alien word) and... you got a c prompt. It blinked. You blinked back. It kept blinking. No matter how much you blinked all you got was a blink back. Excitement turned into WTF?

So unless you wanted the neighborhoods first electronic boat anchor you had to learn to program. From hello world to batch files. And batch files were fun! Back in the DOS days practically everyone could do some sort of programming.

Then along came the GUI. No programming required. And it's been all downhill since. If you don't *have* to do it, you probably won't.

Now they have 9,547.2 different types of bulbs out there. Soon lighting will be proprietary. Oh, wait... even some of the "right" size bulbs don't fit the socket they're supposed to fit.

  25. Re:Bad precedent on Amazon To Collect Indiana Sales Tax In 2014 · · Score: 1

Well that's how the state gets them. Big on line companies offer affiliate programs.

That is, a way for folks to sign up with them and put ads on theire web page for their products. Amazon pays them a commission when they push a sale to them.

Look at the bottom of virtually any big name web page. You'll see affiliates, partners, whatever the wording. That's not other companies. Amazon does it, walmart, kmart, new egg, best buy and on and on.

So, if even one person lives in that state, the state says the company has a presence there. And that's how they're gettin away with charging tax in that state.

And the company will generally cut commissions to anyone in that state so the little guy essentially goes out of business.
