I've been getting into nethack more and more lately. The depth of this game is absolutely intriguing. You can play a thousand games, and no two will be alike. And the more you play, the more you discover that you're able to do. The huge number of beasts you encounter, the immense number of spells to cast, scrolls to read, traps to fall into while holding back screams so the other people in the lab won't think you a weirdo...
The infinite number of absurde, hysterically funny situations you get entangled in. This is what makes nethack more and more fun the more you play, and it's probably what's kept the game alive since the mid-eighties. Nethack is the oldest computer game still in development.
And guess what, it has the best graphics EVER. Your unleashed imagination.
This is what may result from the internet being evenly accessible from all over the world. You need to comply with a set of laws forming the "lowest common denominator" of all laws in the world, eventually - meaning that the strictest laws is what you comly with. Sad, and dangerous.
Enough with your Slashdotian "damned if you do, damned if you don't", "we've never heard of 'benefit of doubt'", "I'ma gonna score me some easy karma" zealot attitude already.
1.2 is really worth installing just for the Type-Ahead Find feature. It's one of those "how did I ever manage without it" features, and a punch in the stomach of anyone who says free software isn't innovating. This feature almost obsoletes the use of a mouse while surfing (well, almost). You see a link you want to follow, called "Click here". So you type "cl", and that link is marked. Now press enter to follow it. So simple, yet so efficient.
You want everyone else to use the mirrors and at the same time, you're downloading from ftp.mozilla.org? Nice;)
I said I was using it, that is until I discovered how slow it was and that slashdot had linked to it:) So of course I cancelled and used the mirror instead.
Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors

Phoenix 0.3 Is Out

· Score: 5, Informative
I'm was pulling down a whoppering 1.0kb/sec from ftp.mozilla.org, thanks to slashdot linking directly to the master server. PLEASE use a mirror, there's a full list of them here. Not all mirrors carry phoenix, and some that do don't have 0.3, but at least this one does (and probably others too).
Here in Norway, DeCSS co-author Jon Johansen has become somewhat of an icon in the fight for rights in the digital age. There's an interview with him here, in which he speaks about how he got involved with DeCSS, and the whole thing about the controversion trial. Also, the EFF has supported him tremendously with legal assistance. Their official Jon Johansen page is here.
People will tell you to disable Javascript alltogether for protection, but it's better to just disable the onunload event. Just put the following line into your user.js file:
user_pref("capability.policy.default.Window.onun lo ad", "noAccess");
"With this and Evolution and Kmail both supporting GPG and PGP are we at the dawn of that golden age when encrypted email will be commonplace?"
Yes, definitely. With the three most popular e-mail clients in the world (Mozilla Mail, KMail and Evolution) all supporting encryption, I'm sure e-mail encryption will finally be the rule.
Here is a list of sites Chinese people shouldn't see. The list includes Google, Altavista. Amnesty, geocities, various.mil sites, free speech sites, Slashdot, SourceForge, and some porn sites as well as a variety of politically oriented sites.
Does the US currently have any plans for a "regime shift" over there?:)
You don't need a fancy fetchmail/procmail setup to use SpamAssassin. MandrakeForum has an excellent HOWTO on how to set it up in KMail, or indeed any MUA that supports filtering through an external process/program. Works like a charm here - I'm never looking back!
Floppy disks?

Actually, that name is spelled "Lrrr", if we speak of the same king of Omicron Persei 8
You Slashdotians are so manipulatable. This post is NOT the material of a +5 post.

Alright alright, if you really want to disable it, the way to do it is described here. Requires some prefs.js entry though.

I think Hobbes said it best: "The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us."

Actually, Futurama ep. 2ACV16 was "PAINSTACKINGLY DRAWN BEFORE A LIVE AUDIENCE", at least according to the opening subtitle.

You won't miss those ununload events anyway

Don't the slashdot editors even click the links in the article they post?
This is the correct link.

I found this VI tutorial particularly easy to follow.

RIP.
Very nice reasoning, and quite original, too.
