My wife went to school wanting to do Anthropology (Primatology to be specific, the whole Jane Goodale thing), well after earning a BA in that she decided it really wasn't for her and she wanted to get a MFA (Masters of Fine Arts, the highest you can get in Art, basically a PhD for artists) so she could teach at the college level. Well they require all sorts of odd prequistes and such to get into those programs without you being a special stupid (stupid stuff like 2D design and art history 101). Well my wife has been an artist on the side for years and is actually ver accomplished, and sells pieces and has been in a couple shows. So in lieu of taking a bunch of classes she doesn't need she went and talked to the Dean of that department and the people in charge of admissions and showed them her work and explained herself and they waved the requirements.
From what I have seen the best thing you can do is talk to the people in charge, don't talk to the low level consuler types they will simply point at the rules book. If you can prove yourself and prove you know what you are doing and that you have direction and drive and are willing to work hard most of the people in charge will let you wave stupid things. So in other words talk to people.

Not kaki pants and a sport jacket, but an actual suit!
Oh my! Heaven forbid!!!
Have you ever had to wear a suit and tie to work everyday? It is one royal pain in the ass, getting stuff presses at the cleaners, scratchy collars, wool suits in the summer. I did it for 5 years at EDS (they were very strict, you couldn't leave their cube without your suit coat on, that and they are based in Texas, can you say 100 degree summers). Suffice to say requireing programmer/engineer types to wear suits is gonna do NOTHING for the good, buissness casual is about the limit. Requiring suits just makes the execs feel better.
Which group of programmers would you hire, a room full of suit wearing 9-5r's or a room full of cheesy-poof eating coffee drinking work around the clock for 3 days straight types (wearing god knows what). Sure you wouldn't want to show the second group to investers, but I bet you would have better code and happier employees (who will stay with you) then the first group.
Been there done that it doesn't work well

Having worked for EDS for 5 years back in the day when it was suit and tie for EVERYONE (couldn't leave your cube without your suitcoat on) I can say first hand that it makes absolutly no differnce in company performance, hell if anything wearing a suit while pulling cable makes a person a worse engineer type, not to mention how much static wool generates. The whole dressing up things goes back to old school upper management who has no concept of the kind of people they want to attract.
All changing the rules does is screw the loyal people a company, since come the next economic boom the company will have to slacken its requirements, offer increases pay to new employees etc etc, leaving the existing hard working loyal types in the preverbal lurch. Oh well those corporate MF's will never learn (too much time binge drinking in college I guess).
I do think a little buissness casual is good, cause if there is no dress code I am coming in wearing my old Metallica t-shirt (metal up your ass), some ripped jeans and combat boots.
Of course, if you re-bore your barrel, that might sidestep the issue. How difficult is that maneuver and does it ruin the usefulness/accuracy of the gun?
Any half wit backwoods gunsmith can rebore a barrel and still have a reasonably accurate gun. The issue is we aren't dealing with high end equipment, guns have been around for hundreds upon hud reds of years and the tech to build and maintain them is relatively low. So anything that relies on a physical aspect of the firearm can be modified, and hence the system circumvented, by ANYONE with a small machine shop (ie tools in their garage).
Not to mention the fact that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to create and load his/her own ammo. So unless a criminal is dumb enough to want to get caught this won't help.
Regardless of reliability of the method (the main issue is you simply replace the barrel and/or firing pin and you have a different print) the fact remains that criminals will simply need to get unregistered or stolen firearms to circumvent the system. So what is the point in spending millions if not billions to register all the guns if it will only help in a very small percentage of the cases?
Uh the eBay auction says it is simply "red paint", I don't see how "amazing" simply dismantaling an iBook and painting the inside with red glass paint is really that impressive. I think the draw on this guys auction is the fact he is including a large amount of "pre-installed" high end software (looks like at least 5 or 6 thousand in software, if not more), not the custom paintjob.
A couple weeks ago I bought an older HP printer of eBay, the seller didn't return my calls or emails, after I sent him the money, and was doing the same for a couple other people who had bought products from him. Well I filed a fraud complaint with PayPal, and they put the money on hold along with his PayPal account. This got the guys attention, so he called me, saying he would send the item only if I dropped the compaint, I told him I would only drop the compaint once I saw the item. In communicating with the guy I found he had at least a couple other eBay id's he was doing the same with (fake auctions), so I tried to contact eBay to let them know. I was refered to some consumer groups and webpages and such, I had a list of the ID's the guys was using and some background, statements from other people who were defrauded, and the guys location (or at least the one the number went back to that I was called on), along with the various aliases the guy was using. Just boggles my mind that they would ignore this.
Did you just read the first sentance and smack reply:
It looks to be marketed to English/French/German speaking countries. And yes I know most people who could afford this in India probably speak/read English, but you would think if you were developing for your own countries market that native language support would at least be considered (then again they speak a whole crapload of languages in India so which one do you do it in?).
It doesn't seem like it is being developed for the Indian Mass market, read the specs. they haven't even developed Indian language support: Multi-lingual Standard language is English. German and French can be built-in at no additional cost but will require 32MB flash. Multi-lingual support via optional language packs for Arabic, Chinese (Mainland and Taiwan), German, Greek, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, and Turkish which is available in Open-Source and/or Commercial versions. Indian language support can be developed.

The site doesn't really look under construction, and the specs are on the Hardware page.
My issue is more the lack of a keyboard, I personally prefer to type, I can thumb key way faster then I can do Graffiti or whatever (all those years with my HP 200lx).
Why don't we see more computers like the 200lx, which was basically a miniature PC (8088 1+ megs RAM) that ran off 2 AA's for a month or more, with PCMCIA exspansion etc etc etc.
I think what is boils down to is the guy doesn't want to pay the 250 bucks. I can understand wanting to save money, but 250 isn't too bad, hell Photoshop is twice that and Macomedia Director is twice that still.
Another point, this sounds like "Veritcal Market" type stuff, not too many people out there in need of the software. Odds are there aren't going to be any true out of the box Open Source products to do exactly this, you could probabaly develope one on your own in no time with a couple of things people have mentioned, but then you weigh that against the 250 it would cost to buy the software and the fact that I can't imagine the majority of "sign cutters" being super computer savvy and hence not understanding Linux or compiling their own programs etc etc, so maybe it boils down to a matter of, no it doesn't exist, most of the pieces are there, so if you need it write it. If you can write it then pay the 250 bucks.
Lastly, this is a pretty retarded "Ask Slashdot", I don't mean to troll or complain, but come on dude, a search on Freshmeat and Google would get you an answer, or have you tried Usenet, might even be a comp.signcutting (you never know;)
Yeah I had the fan on my video card start making clunking sounds and burn out after about 3-4 months. So I just wired and mounted a nice 12 volt high speed fan, works great, no noise and I know my vid card is safe.
I am confused, this doesn't seem much differnt then what Juno and NetZero tried but could never make profitable, didn't they start charging? It is a novel idea, but I think the overhead with wireless would be more then dialup, so I wonder if it would be profitable.
I am confused firtly, about how this is/. material, but I guess the real question is does anyone have video of the monkey smoking, cause that would really be a cool conversation piece, I mean what chick doesn't get turned on when she sees a monkey smoking?
I don't know what errors you are getting on this AmericanTower.com site, but the ones I am getting are MSQL errors and Error 500 "Server Busy" errors. Pointing to a system deficency, not an intentional take down.
I am talking about compile perl buddy, it is a HUGE memory pig, and a space PIG with all those VB runtime libraries. VB is for people who can't program who want to do web stuff. The fact that a successful site runs on IIS/VB/ASP means nothing other then the site designers weren't thinking ahead adn wanted a quick fix, it is the site content that is making the money. My whole point isn't IIS/VB/ASP won't make money on the web, my point is it isn't a GOOD web solution (can we say security issues, performance issues etc etc etc), and compiled VB makes for some HUGE executable memory hogs. And why would you run perl on a IIS box? run it native buddy, in Unix.
As for/.'s not happening everyday, you are right, but you SHOULD be prepared for them and the number one thing to do is NOT RUN IIS;)

Yep, not quite as bad as dismantling a Toshiba laptop (which uses about 20 differnt types of screws).
I am confused? The Anonymous Coward link goes to the sellers email? Is this simply an shameless ad, if so why has it been posted?

If you have to ask, then you probably need one. I would at least consult one in this case.
I don't know if the Council of Gallifrey will let us do that though.
