    I don't expect any privacy with my webhost.

    partly because I realize I'm using their hardware on their site.

    but mostly because it's a shared server.

    If I got a dedicated server, I could set my own root password and lock them out. but then, I wouldn't get support.

    If you want their support, you grant them access to the machine and its data to aid in their troubleshooting.

    what qualifies as an HD broadcast? apparently they think it's just resolution.

    I've seen comcast's HD channels. Blocky as hell for broadcast. I can stream it from the Internet in higher quality.

    if your business users have to edit 32MB text files by hand, someone is a moron.

    Someone didn't know what they were doing in the first place.

    Change the process to make sense.

    Perhaps those "files" should actually be in a database. SQL makes automatic manipulation quite easy.

    I can only hope the judge follows the law and throws this out.

    If the judge grants this, he is not following the law.

    they seem to think you can grant an exception in every case.

    yes, this is true. the ESRB has had content labels on their products since 1994. The problem is, retails and retarded parents don't read the labels.

    I'm a parent and a gamer. My kid isn't playing violent games any time soon. I read the labels.

    there's been a lot of talk on /. lately about broadband and mobile broadband capacity. The taxes that we pay are directly linked to that.

    telecommunications and broadband operators get federal monies from the universal service fund to expand infrastructure to the entire nation. I mean that's the purpose for the universal service fund. Why haven't telecom/mobile and broadband operators expanded their capacities and/or service areas? They are required to pay into the fund. They pass the costs directly on to us. Then they get that money back to build out their infrastructure.

    Why aren't they doing it? Where is that money ending up?

    section I article 4. "The Joint Board recognizes that while mobility and broadband
    capabilities have both received some funding from universal service dollars, the funding has been entirely
    within the formal context of providing basic voice telecommunications services by eligible
    telecommunications carriers (ETCs)."

    This was from a recommendation document where the universal service fund commissioners issued a recommendation that they setup an additional fund for broadband and one for mobile service. Where is that money ending up? AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile are all rolling out 3g services. Where is the broadband service capacity increases?

    good point, but when your employers constantly lie to you to ensure their success and disable your proxcard as a nice way of saying we no longer need your servicese once you give them full documentation on the system you just installed, as happened to me, you tend to start thinking more of yourself.

    a company will screw you over every single time. They don't give a crap about you. Advocate for yourself.

    all networks once configured properly, run smoothly until they don't.

    when they don't, there's one man who can fix it.

    I can fully understand setting up a complex system and getting it working perfectly and then some other admin or consultant coming in and fucking it up.

    when they fuck it up, you have to fix it. And you don't get bonus pay for that.

    not only that, but network/system administrators have to worry a lot about whether management wants to can them simply because things are running so smoothly that they have nothing to do. Which is bullshit because half of the job is keeping up with current tech trends, learning new technologies, and protecting your network on a daily basis. I don't blame the man for guarding his creation jealously. When you start handing over the keys, you are no longer necessary. You get paid too much and this kid who just quit his job of six months from bimblebomble.com seems to know how to do what you do. And we can pay him a lot less and potentially cut out benefits.

    It seems like this justice department threw out the constitution years ago.
    The administration thinks it's above the law.
    Congress is available to the highest bidder.

    What do we do? What do we do when the system becomes so corrupt there's no recourse?
    Our constitution provided some options but we've lost our republic. They're making up laws now to cover stuff that they did while breaking laws earlier.

    And there's no one with courage and integrity left to out these treasonous bastards.

    Diebold's CEO should be tried for high treason. Election tampering is more serious than espionage. Put his life on the line and watch who he rolls over on.

    About 2 years ago, my wife and I bought used cellphones. Nokia N-series phones that you couldn't buy in the US.

    We paid a lot for them.

    Her n70 was actually a sales demo. It wasn't supposed to be sold. The seller claimed ignorance all the way to the bank.
    My n80 was an asian market phone instead of the eu market phone it was supposed to be. Again, different seller claimed ignorance all the way to the bank.

    That's the last time I used ebay. Shortly after that, my paypal account got hacked.

    Ebay is a thieves' bazaar. It's a way to push crap or stolen goods with little or no consequences. There are some who have setup mini stripmalls in ebay to push dollar store crap. You just can't trust ebay anymore to protect your interests.

    I think ebay is definitely on its way out. I can now buy stuff on amazon that before I could only find on ebay. ebay just isn't necessary anymore.

    craigslist can now help you broker private deals.

    I guess you're that other type of gamer. I think myst was a huge waste of time.

    I'm very passionate about faithful translations of in game experiences because I obviously loved the games.

    I agree that writers and voice actors aren't payed enough. I think bad writing and horrible voice acting completely detract from a gaming experience. They make a game less fun.

    You could have perfect gameplay but couple that with a stupid story which makes no sense and horrible voice acting and the game just won't fly in my book.

    I think one of the best games ever made was Wing Commander 4 on DVD.

    yep, you're not a gamer.
    being a game developer doesn't make you a gamer. I've never met any developer that has time to PLAY games.

    And I have ridiculously high standards.

    I'm really tired of movie producers and uwe boll crapping on source material for original games. the fact that you don't get the desire to see a game turned into a movie further enforces my point that you are not a gamer. I've been a gamer since the age of 5 when I got my Atari 2600 and my commodore 64 soon after. I love games. I buy more games per year than DVDs or Albums combined. I love when someone has the idea of turning a game into a movie. Generally they fail miserably, but I still watch.

    It's very easy to make a bad trailer. Since you have no interest in movies made from games, why bother posting anything at all?

    1.) knowing my specs isn't going to help your developers if the game is already built and I've bought and installed it.

    2.) steam did it right. Their hardware survey provides the largest current dataset of gamer computers. It helps developers before they build their games.

    we already know that left4dead is going to run like butter on most systems because valve knew what their customer base was using before they started building the game.

    other developers should take notes from valve.
