  2. My experience... on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 2, Informative

I needed a quick and cheap solution for some Windows machines for our QA group to test things on. We bought some VMWare Workstation licenses and ran 6 VMs running XP on each beefy machine. (About the limit for a machine with 4GB RAM) Granted, there are better VM solutions than Workstation, but we wanted cheap and quick. Don't count on it for anything mission critical. About every two weeks, VMWare would basically eat itself and the Linux box. However, it was easy from a maintenance point of view, because I could VNC in and see all 6 VMs at once. Also, since VMWare has a cloning feature, anytime QA infected the machines with something nasty, or just pissed off XP, I could re-clone it. Also remember that any VM hogging resources can slow down other VMs on the same host.

However, for the context that you are speaking about, I would take the advice of individuals below and look at Citrix or roaming profiles.

Actually its funny, even in Silicon Valley, I have a hard time finding someone techy enough to keep up who is also single and attractive. I was at a shindig at SF City Hall Friday night and someone asked me *why* I'd want to date someone in the same field. Perhaps because previous non-techie boyfriends see me doing anything on the laptop (I'm on call sometimes afterall) and assume I'm just playing computer games and ignoring them.

I'm the only white chick on this whole floor in anything remotely technology related. I was the only girl at all in my 2000 graduating class to get a Bachelors of Science in CS or CIS. So what? Yes, some men get defensive about my presence, others couldn't give a rats ass what gender I am as long as I make shit work. That's life. I guess you just accept it, adapt, and try to grow a thicker skin.

  6. Nice clothes + heels + data center = disaster on IT Workers Worst Dressed Employees · · Score: 3, Interesting

Oh please. I try to dress neatly, even if I'm not dressed super nicely for work. But I have to say, as a female Systems Engineer who tries to be fashionable... it's inevitable that if I'm trying to break in my newest pair of heels, or wearing an expensive sweater or blouse, I'll have to head to the data center and deal with something. I've torn blouses on racks, bled on nice clothes, and also, rack grease doesn't come out of clothes... they don't pay me enough for that.

Also, have you ever had to crawl under a desk for cabling... in a skirt?? Yeah, it sucks, though I'm sure that employee had a nice view that day.

IT workers rarely deal with customers, though I try to look decent when I know I'll be meeting with vendors.

It's just not entirely reasonable to ask anyone in IT to dress up. We think on our feet, deal with hardware on the fly, and deal with various environments.

The MPAA is going about this all wrong. They are going to alienate everyone that they haven't already. I can understand going after people who pirate movies, but it's just as easy to pay money to see the movie/buy the dvd. Most TV shows aren't available for purchase immediately, the DVD releases are seasons behind. They're not going to stop people from archiving the shows, because with TiVo Home Media option, I can dump them to my PC and burn to DVD.

They could make a KILLING by following the business model of soapcity.com, where it breaks down to 50 cents an episode. (Granted, it's a subscription model for $10/mo, or like $3/episode, but that's a damn good deal if you don't have access to a television.)

They use the Microsoft WMP DRM (last I checked) and the download license expires after 30 days. The downloads are available immediately after the episode finishes airing on the west coast, so no one can see it early. And there's no advertisements in the episode.
