  1. Re:The healthcare market has only one impediment. on Can Technology Fix the Health Care System? · · Score: 1

What's the old adage about insurance? Invite all your friends to dinner, and most will have burgers instead of steak. Agree to split the bill equally, and a few will order steak, but pay less for their share. Eventually, everyone will want steak, and they'll wonder why no one can afford dinner. It is no different with State-forced health care, and State-regulated healthcare.

Give me a break. Health care is not the same as other "products". I can arrange an appointment to get a lower G.I.exam done for free any time I want but I haven't. And if I did I certainly would not want to order more than I need even if it is free. Have you ever needed a medical exam or treatment? They are not "steak dinners" in any sense. The only people who would avail themselves of more than they need of these types of "products" are masochists and that fairytale of economics: the so-called rational actor.

Couldn't have said it better myself. What I find fascinating about "Flaunt It" is the uncanny resemblance of that "alternative future" to our present-day music industry.

Sputnik espoused over-the-top commercialism for shock value, (there are ads between the tracks on Flaunt It) and declared themselves a "product" and almost convinced Sony to sponsor them (the single of "21st Century Boy" had the members hawking various Sony products).

20 years later such jingoistic commercialism is commonplace: "product" is even used by the artists to describe their work, people like Dylan and U2 are doing ads, and if you think there are no ads in music you've never heard a hip hop album.

This is modded funny but is often true, if you do research you will find that there are some (usually minor) side effects regarding halos, low light sharpness, etc. For most people its still worth it but if you're someone who needs flawless vision like a fighter pilot or a person who operates on other people's eyes then I wouldn't blame you if you decided that these minor side effects meant that laser surgery might not be the best solution for your vision problem.

Every corrective solution to poor vision that is not a pair of glasses has side effects, I personally will not have the surgery done even though I am probably a candidate but then again I stick clear foreign objects on to my eyeball every day, there can't be any negative side effects to that right?

  15. Re:Bloglines and other centralized aggregators on When RSS Traffic Looks Like a DDoS · · Score: 1

Bloglines rocks! If you use multiple computers a lot a centralized aggregator is a must, otherwise you'll be looking at the same items over and over. Bloglines is perfect with tabbed browsers like Mozilla and Opera, middle-click items that you want to read and continue scanning. The clipping feature offers a storage place for items that you don't have time for immediately or you want to keep as reference. I easily keep track over over 100 feeds and my bookmarks folders have gotten a lot smaller.

  17. Begun again, These Browser Wars on Yahoo! Acquires Oddpost · · Score: 4, Interesting
Over the past few months we have witnessed something remarkable: Browsers are "hot" again. Look at what's come down the pipes: Gmail, a possible plan for WHAT-WG may eventually turn out to be HTML 5.0, the demo of Apple's Dashboard technology, and now today's purchases by Yahoo and Google.

Remember a few years ago how the (cross-platform) web browser was going to make the Windows desktop obsolete? We all know how that turned out, Microsoft leveraged its "advantage" in the desktop world to the browser market. But I think MS made a critical mistake in freezing development of IE and waiting for Avalon. We are starting to see some real slick web-based apps that are as useful as local applications. I've seen people here complaining that Oddpost is just a ripoff of Outlook, of course it is, but that's missing the point. What's important is that you can now get a desktop-like experience in the browser that wasn't possible a couple of years ago.

  20. What's in it for me? on Google Finally Moves Toward RSS Standard · · Score: 2, Insightful

I am not a blogger but I have been a reader of weblogs for a while now, (I have used many aggregators and have settled on Bloglines a web-based aggregator that is awesome with a tabbing browser like Firefox.) I have been following the Atom/RSS dispute for a while but have never seen the answer to the following question: What does this syndication war mean to me as an end user?

A few others in this thread have asked a similar question but the answer always seems to do with how its beneficial to the blogger or content provider. Now this is important of course but as a geek I have learned to be wary of such arguments, the first time I fell for it I ended up with blinking text in my browser. Maybe I'm too cynical but I'm comfortable being cautious and indeed a little skeptical of the latest and greatest technological innovations.

That being said: What will Atom do for me, Joe Blogreader, that the defacto standard RSS does not? Feeds and aggregators have changed how I use the net, my bookmarks menu has shrunk significantly and I'm on fewer mailing lists. What does Atom have to offer ME that I should bug my content providers to offer Atom feeds in addition to or in place of RSS?
