  1. Re:You know what that means? on Grand Theft Auto IV Unveiled On 360 · · Score: 1

The X-Box exclusive DOA series is *almost* enough on its own to make me want a 360, and hopes for more HALO games also has me rather jazzed over it. My "wait and see" attitude has mostly been based on a fondness for GTA:III & GTA:VC, which were exclusive to the PS2 for about a year.

If Sony does not have the GTA series locked up in their stable, what is there left to wait and see?

To each his own. For me, DOA is fun, but for fighting I prefer Tekken. My roommate prefers all the 2D fighters. I'm looking forward to the new Zelda game. I've played all the GTA games so far, but I'm getting bored with them. I never even finished San Andreas. There's only so much killing people and taking there cars I need to do. I like RPGs, and Fable was one of the few games that tempted me toward the original Xbox.

So I'm not excitied about the PS3. I'm less excited about the 360. I'm somewhat excited by the revolution. I'm perfectly happy with all the great games for PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox so far. The next generation just doesn't matter to me yet. Gameplay is far more important than graphics (I liked Dragon Warrior VII,) and the current consoles are 'good enough' for me. Give me great games, and I'll spend $500+ on a console. Meanwhile, I'll be busy playing all the good games I still haven't had the time to finish.

I'm glad you enjoy GTA and Halo enough to make you want to buy a 360. But just because those are your favorite games doesn't mean that's the end of the console wars for the rest of us. The super great game that I'm looking for is the one that we won't be expected. It won't be a re-make of an existing franchise. It'll be something like Katamari or Shadow of the Colossus that comes out of nowhere and is different. Maybe it'll be on the 360, maybe it'll be Sony's baby. Maybe it'll be for my cell phone. I don't know. But I'll still wait and see. More of the same just isn't worth $500 to me. I know I will own all three eventually. But Nintendo is likely to win this one just because they'll be in the $200-300, which is more reasonable for non-essential purchase like a game console. Especially when I have 6 different ones in my living room already that are still fun.

The real question is, can this guy afford to stay in the fight long enough to bring a case to conclusion?

The main reason a big company is willing to sue small ones frequently, is that even if the law doesn't support the big one, they can afford to outlast a small one so the little guy gives up without a fight. It isn't right, but it is the way it often goes.

Seriously, put it to the test. To win all Cory needs to prove is that most people associate the word superhero with characters outside of Marvel and DC. Prove the trademark is truly diluted and therefore must be revoked.

You must have an optimistic view of the way our legal system works.

True, it is likely that if a jury were ever to be given a chance to rule on this, the trademark would be revoked. But legal procceedings can be dragged out for years. Marvel and DC have armies of lawyers, it would take forever to get to the point where a court would actually be ready to make such a decision. And so it would take a lot of money to keep the battle up.

I'm sure whatever money needed could easily be gathered from donations

I'm sure the initial court costs to start such a case could easily be gathered through donations. But enough money to last long enough to actually force a verdict? That could easily be more than even a modest competitor like Dark Horse (I think they are an independent publisher, but I can't say I'm an expert on comic publishers) would go bankrupt if they tried. Which is probably why nobody has challenged it, as it simply isn't worth the fight.

How about you then? If you feel so strongly why don't you sue Marvel/DC over the trademark? Same reason nobody else does. While it bothers you some, is it worth the time and effort required to gather all the donations to 'fight to free superheroes' and spend millions in court fees simply so superhero can become a generic term again? I didn't think so. You'd rather be sarcastic guy that posts on slashdot.

If you ask a girl out on myspace, and then she is murdered, the police/fbi could track who it was from the records myspace keep. I doubt most of them are skilled computer hackers. I think you are right, but the direction things are going isn't going to be toward a cheaper price, it'll be getting more with your subscription.

I remember the days when my modem internet access was measured and metered in minutes. Those days sucked. People in general prefer a reasonable rate for unlimited use. Cell phones are moving that direction. My plan has enough minutes it might as well be unlimited access.

However, I do expect things to go the way City of Heroes/City of Villians works. I can play both games for the same monthly fee. I know they are really different twists on the same game, but the other big companies should take a hint from them. It's all about keeping your subscribers happy, and giving them more to do so they keep coming back.

I forsee the smart companies building a collection of games all under one subscription. Sierra tried something like this a long time ago, but it was too early and there wasn't enough to do. Imagine if Blizzard launched World of Starcraft (and you know it is going to happen eventually) and let players subscribe to both games for the same price. Then when you get bored hunting for trinkets in WoW, you can just log off and go play WoS. Then later they expand their line, and you aren't subscribing to one particular game anymore, but the Blizzard Online Universe or whatever.

    Just wait, it'll happen.

  10. But... What's new about it? on .Net Framework and Visual Studio Now Available · · Score: 1

I am currently working on a project that is built with VS 2003. There are some nice things in the .Net framework, but there were some basic classes I've had to extend myself. So is there someplace with a concise list of useful new features to look at?

Things I'm looking for are say, datagrids for example. Have they finally made a combo box column type? Or a method to color different rows in a datagrid? Or even a good double-click handler for data grids?

I've built some of my own extensions for these, but they sometimes still feel like a hack. Particularly my combo box column, which doesn't quite handle tabs right. Or how if I want to know when the user double clicks on a row, the first click goes to the data grid, and the second goes to the row, so I have to track the clicks and times myself. Which seems silly considering all the other places I don't have to worry about that sort of thing. Similar for clicking on a check box in a row.

Haven't wanted to mess with the beta version, but can anyone who has tell me some good reasons to switch over? It'd have to have some nice features to convince me to migrate the existing product we've got, considering the time it would take to a) convert the project, and b) test to make sure everything still works, c) roll out 2.0 framework to everyone's machine.
