This lawsuit is against a end user. Not a anti spam list or anything like it. This was a user complainig over spam to an organisation like ORBS. This resulted in a shutdown (whether it's the end users fault or not isn't known) of the spammer...
Well... i would like to see a trial like this over here.. hell... i even volunteer in such a case to be the end user....
Jees... one of the longest pieces of text i read on slashdot.. Someone forgot the web could be used to hyperlink to such information and let it be viewable for a larger public..
Okay.. there is no larger public as the/. crowd.. i know...
This law can only be enforced if the spammer is europe based.
Sadly this is almost never the case but i could be encouraging to other countries to adopt similar laws. We would never be able to block every spammer on earth but it would undoubtly reduce the amount of spam we have to cope with.
This is surely good news since my provider XS4ALL allready won a courtcase against a dutch spammer and recently introduced spam filters on everyones account (individually configurable by the subscriber).
Reading between the lines of the poster and from the various comments i see alot of people favoring RedHat. Nothing wrong with this except it's also evident that they are as fervently pro RH as they are pro linux. Instead of Linux versus Windows (which isn't correct as well IMHO) it's Red Hat against all the others..
For alot of people in the US RedHat may be synonimous with Linux, it isn't the other way around for the rest of us. RH has a strong base in the US but take a look to the rest of the world will you? There is Red Flag linux in China, Mandrake and SuSE are pretty popular in Europe where RedHat isn't an obvious choice.
In fact, globally looking this could be what Linux was holding back. Like several others have pointed out, it's a pain to write for Linux because you have to take into account all the various distro's with there slightly different way of placing conf files etc. United Linux could be changing all this. An ISV can now just write the program once and that's it. No more extra development time to see if the app will run on both RH or Suse. No more pain in the ass to see which lib version is used by Mandrake istead of the one used by Caldera. The list could be as long as you want.
The fact that RH isn't in the list of participating distro's doesn't mean they couldn't be a part of this, they can join whenever they want and without any problem. This is not meant to compete with RH. This is meant to UNITE all distro's to comply to a standard base to give linux a big boost into corporate minds. Why is Linux still marginally used in office's? Not because it's lack of power and stability. It's the apps department. Why aren't ISV's working on linux versions? Because they don't know which distribution to target. RH, SuSE, Caldera, Mandrake and Debian are all too diferent from each other to just port an app once and then be done with it. You have to write different versions. This costs developerstime and thus money which they rather spend at doing something that will give them a steady revenue without too much hassle..
Please do not start bashing other distro's because they do something different then the one you favor. You should instead be focussing on learning why they do this and if what they do will help Linux or not. See more then just your personal feelings or needs. try to see the big picture because before you know it Linux wil be dismissed as another platform that's not viable to be used in corporate environments. And if you don't want it there perhaps try to look for a new os to toy with then..
Time has shown us that everyone can be bought given the right amount of money. Why should a senator or lawmaker be different? As long as it is possible for companies and lobbyists to financially back an election this problem will persist.. hell, even when the law prohibits this they will find a way to get what they want.
People ponying up all that money for a CD or DVD/VHS taped movie or any form of merchandise are indirectly paying up for this shit.
How about starting the development for this kind of support if you so badly need it? You could join the development team without great effort. Just start to code and turn it in to the lead developer for Mozilla or something...
It's sad to see Atari's legacy being abused by yet another company who just lives on Atari's fame.
Atari used to be a great systems manufacturer as well as a gaming company. Their ST line was very good and could compete with the Amiga in it's days. Their STacy an STBook were great portables where the STBook was way better then what any company could offer as a portable. It took years for the industrie to reach the same kind of portability as the STBook offered.
Alas, Atari is no more. The companies diverse owners just broke it into little parts and sold them to the highest bidders.. There are few companies which have had a change of ownership so frequently as Atari has.
Take a look at http://www.atari-history.com for some background information on Atari and it's products
With dismay i read your article.. i'm an atheist so i don not believe in any kind of god (notice the lower case g). However, i do not _ever_ mistake an extremist religieus idiot with being a spokesperson of _any_ religion. Besides christians aren't so great themselves.. (remember WWII where bishops of both sides blessed the armys that went to war and kill each other in the name of god and country).
I agree that the Islam calls hatred into ones mind but i have spoken alot with muslims lately and most of them deny categorically any kinship with (their words) "those extremist pigs". The koran on itself does not preach hatred or intolerance it's those who abuse it who do this.
I have been a christian most of my life until i decided i didn't want to be a part of such nonsense. I do however respect another who does care for a religion. Whether one believes in Jahweh/Jehovah, Allah, Boedha or any other of those gods above is up to them, not me. Nor is it up to me to judge a religion solely by the acts of fools.
Reading the reply's i just noticed that either you are saying Ay or Nay against this subject.
Both sides have very valid points. On point of view is missing though...
Will this begin the period where UNIX began slipping? To offer an incentive you make your distro different, either easier or with more packages etc.. then you start making proprietary tools like YaST... then your distro will be offering things to attract corporate attention, either by making it's base different from the competition, and then your distro is fundamentaly different. Despite the fact that the LSB advocates a standard you just won't comply just to keep your market share..
Well.. they had to do something to stay alive? Both companies were having problems that would have made them a serious takeover target for other companies. They decided that they would rather risk a merger than to be taken over by a company like Dell or IBM.
And yes, they seriously were in that position.
If they made a wise decision or not is something for the future. Although some "visionairs" say they know the future of the new company.
There's a saying which could be applied here:
A visionair (or pundit or whatever) is someone who can explain _exactly_ to you why a merger will not work before the merger and when the merger succeeds they can tell you _exactly_ why this success was the unwritten exception on the rule..
Actually, SuSE 8.0 ships since a couple of weeks with KDE3. So, no, Red Hat isn't the first one to ship with KDE3. I don't know if there are other distro's shipping with KDE3...
Compared to the toys from the first series the line of toys now don't look all that nice to me...
This is more or less a tryout of re-introducing series which were hits back then.. probably hoping they could have the same impact on toy sales as their first line...
If they have enough money they can hire someone to do the documentation.. shows how little developers normally care about documentation. I know, because i maintain a HOWTO for developers who do not like documentation.. to much work... well.. i can't code.. so then i document.. problem is.. i'm not technically enough informed regarding material like OGG's specs and it's use.
Mr Gates said his group's sales to computer manufacturers were worth between $6bn-$7bn a year, and that the discounts could reach 25 per cent of those revenues.
What is wrong with stripping down windows to bring back competition? Why not have a Windows XP Lite? When prices for these versions are lower than the rest it's probably drawing more people to buy the OS instead of looking to cheaper alternatives as Linux. This would allow MS to have inroads at different kind of systems. The cheaper the OS the cheaper the box can be?
Don't get me wrong here, i use Open Source at home (except for the system of my daughter who really needs Windows for school).
This article was on linuxjournal yesterday.. and now it's up at/. ???
Boy.. talk about slow newsgaring...
For what it's worth, the centre is running on volunteers. If you happen to live nearby why not go and help a hand... i would like to know what their "bussiness model" is. Here in the Netherlands we do not have something similar while we really could use one.. Perhaps something to start up here as well...
I'm managing a small network.. my boss ordered that every new system will be out of the EVO line from Compaq.. "stylisch black with a scent of silver". I'm allready bored by this fenomenon as i was with the beige outfits.. but anything beats the lollypop colors mixed with beige you see on the list of all those case manufacturers in an attempt to look a bit more fashionable...
The article mentions the use of an cryptographic coprocessor that will self destruct if it notices any breach of security, rendering the stored data useless. It also states that this "vault" could be used to store medical information etc..
I for one would like to know for sure that my medical information could be retrieved even after the destruction of the coprocessor.. would be nice when i'm caught in accident and i'm not able to sum up my medical history myself...
Off course it's possible to use a less secure version of this "vault" for this kind of applications
This is one nice solution though to harden the carnivore system against unwanted, illegal, snooping around for nice bits of information that could be used by a cop or fbi agent on the take...
It is known throughout the Internet that previous versions of the system now known as Echelon has been used for industrial espionage. Off course, the government sees it different but facts are that information about bussiness orders have been handed over to (American) rivals. So alot of companies want to be sure that Carnivore isn't misused for the same kind of "information gathering"
Microsoft couldn't do anything else.. it has to fight it's way up to Sony which is number 1 overall. People who own PS1 consoles now will probably not buy the Xbox just because their current games aren't compatible with it. If they buy the PS2 they have a new gaming console, new games AND they can still use their old games without having their old console.
Microsoft can only aim for those who do not own a console allready or those who want a new console and their is no "upgrade" for their current cosole and it's games.. and those are few. The people who did not buy a gaming console in the past are most likely not going to buy one now just because Microsoft is the manufacturer. Those who do will most likely ask around their friends to see what they use so they can swap games etc..
Microsofts best bet is "giving away" the console at very low prices hoping that people with less money to spend will choose their Xbox. Not because of the games, not because of the Microsoft tag and certainly not because of the fact that it is "superior" to other consoles..
But what is "inside" the US?? Transactions took place ON the internet. The buyers didn't have to go to stores in the US because they do not sell or market the product. They received letters and sent letters from and to US citizens... so what? I am daily bombarded with SPAM from US domains (and many others btw). Does this imply that if a Ducth law (i live in the Netherlands) is apllicable to the companies SPAMming me? If so i will see if i can bring them to justice...
As for the argument deserving his own article.. yes it is. The outcome of this case implicates alot. If i write a program which in some obscure way violates US laws it would be nice for me to know what that implies for me. Am i, or am i not, subject to US law..
The article stated that Elcomsoft did not prohibit access for american people so it is subject to the US law.. is this necessary then?
I mean, does the US citizens like to be a subject to the chinese law if they buy directly over the internet (or on the internet)? The implications are going much further then that.. If people outside the US are subject to US laws then the same goes the other way around.. or are we looking at a country who wants their laws to be forced onto others without any repercussions?
Suddenly gets another meaning... while your in the boardroom easily ordering cups of coffee, getting everyones taste from their PDA's while continuing to blab about next quarter's profits...

Cell phones switch off automatically or in the very least switch to vibrate instead of your favorite mp3. Appointments spoken out in the room will be recorded and an agenda entry will be made...
