  8. Wait! Don't switch yet! (A Porta-Hell Story) on What Has Number Portability Done For You? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I was off-contract with T-Mobile, and had experienced many bandwith problems with them. I'm near an interstate interchange-- traveling calls fill the entire tower. I noticed an amazing deal on a treo 600 on amazon, and decided to get it, knowing that I could port it to SprintPCS, where I have another cell phone, and much better service.

I initiated the transfer on Wed, 11/26. I had heard rumblings of portability problems with the wrong information being entered into the system, so I made sure "customer care" specialist repeated all of the information back to me. They gave me an original "due date" of Saturday, 11/30 at Noon.

Saturday rolled around and no transfer. I called back, and it turns out Sprint submitted the wrong address to the WLNP system. If the addresses don't match, it won't port. Nobody had called me in 3 days. To make matters worse, the address they submitted was my old address- 4 years and 3 addresses ago! It was my original address with Sprint, not even my current one they had on file!!

To cut a long story short, I've called Sprint 5 times since then, still no port 7 days later, and each time I call, they give me the wrong address issue, even though I've corrected it 6 times.

This most recent time, I waited 2 hours (on a landline) to speak to someone in the Sprint WLNP dept. They eventually got T-mobile on the line. Finally, they both agreed that it was the FCC-contracted third party that was the holdup, but that their system was in the middle of an "update" and was unaccessable for 2 hours. (In the middle of a business day?!!?)

This system is not working. If these companies had spent the time and effort making this work instead of fighting it, and maybe tested it at least once, it would work better.

But because there are so many parties involved, they figured they didn't have to, because there are 2 other people they can point the finger at.

I've yet to hear from a single AT&T person online who's successfully ported.

If you've having problems such as me, make sure to REPORT IT.

Other resources I've been using, mostly to comisserate:

    Howard Forums
    Sprintusers.com
    Number portability forum

Wait until they get the kinks out-- the system should take but a few hours, not more than a week!

  9. All well and good, but bring on Wing Commander! on The Matrix Going Massively Multiplayer · · Score: 1

I know Origin more or less doesn't exist, but if there was ever a story/universe that is crying for a MMPORPG It's wing commander. Seriously, space battles and promotions and cap ships and trading. I'm getting misty eyed just thinking about it. In the universe of computer gaming there is no huger a pool of wasted profit than that of a WC franchise game.

Then again, I'm not sure you'll be able to convince people to fly circles around you while you dogfight, making it easier for them to pick you off-- but they can work that out in the beta.

  11. The confidence correlation. on Tall People Earn More · · Score: 1

I've had quite a few short managers over the years. In fact, for both of my previous employers, the owner would be considered 'short.'

The 'napoleon complex' is reasonably well documented, and height can obviously be a motivating factor. (in these cases, perhaps to overcompensate or overachieve). If extreme deficiency in height can be a motivating factor, it seems logical that height (esp. above-average height) should be as well.

I'm successful. Especially when you consider my demographic. I owe a lot of it to competence, sure, but the level I have reached is due solely to confidence. While I'm only slightly above average height, I'm extremely confident, especially about things at which I excel. In order to be making the salary I am, I had to get on a track that would put me here, and that has required my holding fast to the salary requests I've made.

When I change employers I set a high, but realistic target salary, and I know I'm worth it. It's only the confidence in myself and my abilities which has allowed me to do this.

Honestly, I want to see one of these go to a jury trial. If 50+ million Americans really are filesharers, then it's going to be DAMNED tough to find a jury that's not chock full of EM!

Seriously, this is such a travesty. People should be liable for the actual damages (ie the cost of the CDs) not the "potential" losses. You can sell a gun to a minor that's used in a murder and only get a year in jail, but if you make a file available, they charge you more than the loss could ever possibly cost them. Microsoft is also considering whether to make the Auto Update mandatory earlier, through an interim upgrade known as a service pack.

This is a huge mistake. Talk about a support nightmare. I recently spent several hours trying to find out why my machine was freezing intermittently, only to find that Update 811493 was to blame. I uninstalled it and everything worked perfectly-- if they make it mandatory, and have a similiar problem what do we do? (Switch to Mac or Linux, right?)

For the record, there's still no way to tell Microsoft I NEVER want this update. If I use "auto update" at all it downloads it and wants to install. So, now I'm stuck using manual update or my machine might freeze up again.

    Just great.

The flipside is that the DirecTivos are more difficult to hack, and I don't think there's any easy way to Hack the HDVR2 (latest and 'greatest')

As others have mentioned, the HDVR2 is plagued with audio issues, while not devastating, still annoying-- and there hasn't been a patch since release-- 8 months ago. Also, there's no word on support for Home Networking for this model, even though the hardware supports it. :-P
