If they're concerned about the spread of proteins then they aren't properly cleaning their instruments to begin with. Anything that can't be put in an autoclave or cleaned using chemicals that break down organic matter completely should be disposed of.... the fact that this isn't happening already, especially for brain surgery, is deeply concerning.

Bullshit... if they did they would allow somebody other than the copyright holder to report the violation... but they don't. In fact they have made it nearly impossible for non-copyright holders to report such violations directly to YouTube...

Why? To keep their views, and thus ad revenue, as high as possible... because they're only in it for the money...

While the product they make isn't the worst I've seen, far from it in fact, they're still largely irrelevant in the free antivirus space these days... in large part due to Microsoft and the built in protection they now offer as part of windows. And while nothing is perfect, I've found Defender to be fast and reliable in recent years. Any remaining market that Kaspersky might have a chance in is pretty diluted by all the other options available out there... Frankly I'm kind of surprised they're still around...

  18. Flakes.... on Ask Slashdot: Are We Living In the Golden Age of Bailing? (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

How is this news? Addicts flaking out on folks is nothing new... and that's exactly what we're seeing here. You may not see it as that at first, but that's what it is.... folks are ADDICTED to their mobile devices, tv, and the internet... addicts aren't just pill poppin crack smokin junkies any more...

If you have friends that flake out a lot, it's not likely because they are busy, it's because they're addicts... perhaps it's time you had a talk with them.

  19. This really isn't news, Microsoft makes cuts like this nearly every year, often larger... if anything this is a warning to those working near the affected MS offices that the job market is about to be flooded with more useless goons that even MS doesn't want around... I worked there for almost 6 years, trust me when I say most of the people they're letting go aren't worth their salt.

  23. "Employees are being rated as poor performers so companies can get rid of them"

How about the high demand for workers in the tech industry created an environment in which demand outstripped supply so just about anybody could get a job with little to no training... which of course led to an industry full of idiots with extremely poor customer service skills who lacked even the most basic skills needed to perform most IT related functions... so much so that without written step by step instructions they were incapable of doing anything...

They're simply trimming the fat or separating the chaff, or whichever analogy you prefer... and this is only in response to the companies that pay these indian tech firms telling them to hire qualified workers "or else"... so of course the workers groups are going to try and turn this around by saying that the ratings the employees are being given are inaccurate or unfair... but they're full of shit and they know it.

  24. It's a waste of money and only useful for catching the absolute dumbest of criminals... the rest will find ways around it, from using decoys and distractions(folks shooting off guns through a hole in the floor of their car or dropping large firecrackers for example...) to silencers, smart criminals can easily evade such a system... of course the police and the companies that made the systems won't tell you that because they love wasting your tax dollars and are scared to admit that the only real solution is to give up on the worthless expensive war on drugs and the fight for more gun control and instead focus on drug treatment and making it easier to good law abiding citizens to adequately arm themselves for protection.

  25. Concrete.... on Los Angeles Tests Reflective 'Cool Pavement' On Streets (dailynews.com) · · Score: 2

Using concrete without a coating of asphalt on top has a similar effect... how about just paving with concrete. It lasts longer, requires less maintenance, and is cooler. If made thick enough it can also be ground down to "resurface" it several times without any need to add more concrete unlike asphalt roads.

Using asphalt is only done because asphalt is a byproduct of the petroleum refining process and the oil companies have done everything they can to ensure they can sell their waste and force us to use it so they can avoid having to pay disposal fees for the stuff.. And while asphalt *can* be recycled, it also pollutes more than most folks care to believe. The pollution caused by the use of asphalt is right there with the pollution caused by tires... both of them break down into smaller and smaller pieces and make their way into the environment... and the stuff is everywhere, not unlike the lead that used to spew from tailpipes just a few decades ago. Manufacturers of asphalt and tires are even responsible for a far greater evil than simply polluting because we need roads and tires and don't have another option at the moment... the pollution they cause is far greater than it needs to be thanks to efforts to make the products as cheap as possible which leads to premature and excessive wear. Good quality asphalt and tires wear out far slower and therefore pollute less, but greed makes that at best a tertiary concern for profit motivated corporations.
