  1. Does anyone really care? on On2 Releases VP6 video codec · · Score: 3, Interesting

I dont, i'll continue to use Divx or Xvid. Being that both are either free or really cheap (for the pro ver of divx).

I dont buy thier claims that its any better than divx. To start with, thier samples are biased and most likely have been changed to show an advantage in thier product.

If they do in fact have a better quality then the comperable codecs, is it worth the cost of licening this codec for just a slight improvement in quality?

  4. costs on AOL Cans 1 billion Spams In One Day · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Let see here....
if we have 1 billion spams per day, at roughly 5kb per message, this equals to almost 5TB of wasted bandwidth. This is only what is caught. Now with this we can start estimating the costs per day for dealing with spam.

Lets consider bandwidth cost $1 per GB, AOL being as large as they are may be able to make that less. At that cost it is $5000 per day. This does not include the cost for extra equiptment to deal with the extra bandwidth, for people to write anti-spam software, etc. i'm going to estimate that it cost AOL over $10000 per day because of spam. or over 3.5 million in one year.

  5. What i thought on Movielink.com: Nice But Not Ready For Prime Time · · Score: 3, Interesting

I tried it... but they need some improvments before i will try it again.

Prices: Compared to DVD rental at blockbuster... movielink is sometimes more expensive. You dont even get close to DVD quality. There is a convenice factor in the price and i expect that.

Quailty: Movie link is really poor. i dont like movies that are 320x240 standard. I did email them about this. they told me that in the near future they will make available widescreen movies. Hopefully at a res higher than 320x240.

Serivice: This is probably where they score the highest. I had no trouble paying for and downloading the movie i wanted to watch. I had mistyped my email address when i signed up and customer service made it really easy for me to fix that.

So in the end. I really think that movielink has potential. If they get less afraid that someone will copy thier movies.

There are 3 main packages 3dsmax, maya, and lightwave. Then a bunch of others such as electic image, houdini, bryce, blender etc...

Each of these packages take thier own methodology in interface and content creation.

The best one i found is 3dsMAX its powerful yet easy to use. Not to metion a standard in the industry.

Maya is much more confusing.. but it allows so much more custimization. If money is an issue, this is cheaper than 3dsmax.

    I havent used lightwave much.

I think that walmart adding lindows to the computers they sell is one of the worst things that could happen to linux. Here's why:

1.The average person that would by a buy a walmart computer is not going to be very computer savvy. They probably wont know the difference between windows and linux. What happens when that person buys windows software and assumes that it will run on his or her new computer?

2.Tech support. Most computer repair techs are familiar with windows, but not that many would be comfortable working with linux if at all. If they buyer needs help with running widows, they cant just call thier local computer guy.

There is one good thing with this, we finnaly have a version of windows thats easy for anyone with some computer knowlege to install and use. i know mandrake and red hat are supposed to be easy also, they still require a bit of technical knowlege.
