  1. mirmax funded production of hero on Miramax C&Ds Kung Fu Movie Reviewer · · Score: 1

Mirmax funded the production of hero, instead of later purchasing the rights. So i would assume that the are already made some money on it. Unless their contract only allows them to make money off the US release.

I for one already got my copy of both Hero and Shoalin Soccer. Both of them are avaialable at sensasian.com.

  2. Politcally Correct Art on Rockstar Investigated Over GTA - Vice City · · Score: 0, Redundant

What freedom of speech protections apply to this? Does Take2 have to censor thier creative work becuase certain groups take offense to that work?

Im definetly not advocating discrimination, but it is a part of human nature. Do we have to ignore it to remain politcally correct? The same goes for certain words that are now considered taboo. But what if someone was writing a book with a character who might use those words? Do they have to censor themselves?

IMHO politcal correctness has sheilded the real issues that are part of our socity. There are people who discrimate, sterotype or hate one type of group or another. Vice city show some of that, both for humor and realism. But is covering that up going to solve the problem? I really doubt it.

  3. A furture to come? on Second Life MMO To Let Players Make Money In-Game · · Score: 2, Interesting

I see 2L as a very interesting expirment with IP and the economics of a total digital world. All items are digital and have only its creation time and no manufacturing cost. Items could be duplicated instantly.

Im not sure exactly what happens when you sell an item you create. Do you sell the item you create? Who keeps the copyright? Or do you sell a copy? Just licencing the item. What happens to the economic system if an item can be instantly duplicated?

Some of that applies to the sale of music and movies in the real world.

  4. Pointless on UbiSoft Blocks Virtual Drives With Raven Shield Patch · · Score: 3, Insightful

I can understand the plague of piracy but that affects all creative fields.

Using technological solutions to block piracy will just inconvenience legal users of the software. Those who want to pirate it, will reguardless of what protection is used. There is no copy protection that cannot be broken. Its just that some schemes take longer than others to break.

Although the DMCA outlaws reverse engineering. But like any law its only effective if one chooses to follow it. Those who want to pirate the product, certainly wont.

I would say the best solution is make games cost less then $50-60. Dont adjust prices for piracy. All your doing is making the legit users pay and encouraging more piracy due to high costs. Electrontic diribution can cut costs, but the price should reflect that.

    Thats enough for now.

  7. More of the same on Belkin Routers Route Users to Censorware Ad · · Score: 2, Insightful

This one is a bit more grey than something like versign's site finder. IMHO i think that adds should only part of a product or service if the terms of that service explictly states that there will be ads. At this point we have a choice of using that service or not. So we have a choice of seeing those advertisments.

This goes wrong when advertisments are part of a public space. Like sitefinder or billboards. If we are in that public space, we have no control over wether or not we will see the ads.

As for the belkin routers. In this issue they are not breaking any rules unless they do not inform the consumer that this "feature" is in thier products. A consumer does not have to purchase belkin routers.

  9. hack? on Conflict On Graphic Standards Hurting PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

I think someone did this with the dawn demo and hacked it to work on ATI cards. Is anyone hacking bridge it?

As far as the whole ati vs. nvida thing. Im not suprised that nvidia did this, but if thats the case, bridge it should be reguarded as only an ad and nothing else.

Even more, i've owned cards from both companies. I have found that ati cards although faster, tend to be less stable and more buggy than nvida cards. Other people may have other opinions, thats my experience.

The people who pirate will still pirate it anyway. These are not studios who have alot to loose if they get caught, but just students and independent users who want to learn the software.

We should have area codes specifically for cellular phones. That way they would be trully mobile. You could always have that number.

  16. got a point on Are The Press Neglecting Games As Art? · · Score: 1

games have gotten to a point where its not about how cool the graphics look anymore. HL2 is implementing many of the things that were restricted to non real time 3d graphics. Technically, there are no limits.

I try to look at games less from a technical standpoint and more at how well it was directed. Does it have a solid story? Is there good art direction? Does the game try to be original and uniquie or just another game?

There are some technical aspects that still matter. If its to hard, or too clunky to play your not going to play it.

We will see what happens, but i think games need more credit than they do get.

In some ways, its like the theater model, you show a movie in theaters and hope they will buy the dvd 6-12 months later. Just in this case, they loose out on the theater money.

Maybe consumers dont want to pay $8-10 to see a movie in theaters. And then pay $15-$25 for the DVD later. Who can blame them.

Child pornography has been disributed by perverts by many diffrent ways before the advent P2P. Shall we make the US postal system illeagal for the same reason?

One could argue that it is much easier to get Child pornagraphy on P2P. There is a hole in that logic, you actully have to be looking for it to find it. The person looking for it in the first place is the root of the problem, not P2P.
