    except my PC is just enclosed in the desk cabinet with a door. This helps a bit but the thing that made the biggest difference of all the things I tried was to use a bigger fan. A 90mm cpu fan can run much slower at a equal flow rate to a 60mm cpu fan and that reduces the noise the most.

    You got to be kidding. I just did this on my PII 350 system (with average components) and the startup time for gedit was 3.173s (real time.)

    As I understand it, "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" is based on the Quake 3 engine. And there is certainly some beautiful outdoor terrian scenes in that game.

    I still remember the OCF at Berkeley back in 1995. All they had were basically a half dozen donated Apollo Unix computers. And the access terminal were basically VT100 green screens.

    I tried 3 types of "quiet" fans and sound absorbtion padding and what worked the best is a Zalman flower cooler. They are about $28 with a speed adjustment control included. With my Athlon XP 1800, I was able to reduce the speed to the minimum with only a 4C hit on temperature from my ultra fast CPU fan I had originally. Now the next source of noise is the fan on my video card!

    Scientists have been able to get much older air sample through ice cores in the artic/antartic region. There are often air pocket in these cores which they can analyze to get some idea.

    I have an old Pentium 166 w/ 64MB and S3 virge video card lying around which I might use to play around with this stuff. Assuming no X Windows, will this be adequate to run OpenBSD without swapping to the harddrive much?
